<JJJollyjim>
im kinda missing the old nixos option search :(
<JJJollyjim>
it takes a full second to search for something or switch pages, and it used to be instant on typing
<hexa->
same.
<samueldr>
does it actually take a full second?
<samueldr>
that would be bad
cole-h has joined #nixos-chat
<samueldr>
btw, I'm looking for actual issues, not to tell you you're wrong :)
<JJJollyjim>
i live in new zealand, roundtrips to us-east-1 are 300ms
<danderson>
same. The instant autocomplete was magic for quickly iterating on configs. Now that it's a "type a word and hit enter", it feels much slower to return
<danderson>
I can't comment on the RTT because I'm in temporary housing with hilariously bad internet, so everything is slow always :)
<samueldr>
danderson: yeah, the feedback from working with the full dataset is something I knew would get to some people (me included)
<JJJollyjim>
is the full dataset too big to download?
<samueldr>
for the options, no
<JJJollyjim>
it fits in a single man page right?
<danderson>
otoh, the fact that it doesn't take 5s to load any more is also nice :)
<samueldr>
for the packags, it was already past the limit and didn't actually index everything
<JJJollyjim>
yeah understandable for the packages
<samueldr>
yeah
<JJJollyjim>
it's definitely an improvement there
<JJJollyjim>
i'd rather go back to the old one for options though :(
<danderson>
once upon a time, google did "psychic search", where they fired off a search request on every keystroke, and live-updated the results
<danderson>
cost 100x more in resources to run all the useless searches, but it was pretty amazing when it worked :)
<danderson>
might DoS elasticsearch though :D
<samueldr>
JJJollyjim: the good news is that nothing is set in stone, and we're all human (still) working on the site
<JJJollyjim>
are there big advantages having the codebase merged into one?
<samueldr>
yes
<samueldr>
though merging the codebase doesn't mean we *have* to merge the backends
<JJJollyjim>
hmm
<samueldr>
I guess we could figure out a way to use the previous type of backend for options
<JJJollyjim>
i could have a look at contributing that if you want
<danderson>
I also don't mean to complain about the lovely free things I'm getting. I'm still pretty happy, and if this search can now also return packages... that's kind of a big deal
<JJJollyjim>
being the most incentivized to due to latency :P
<danderson>
oh man, yeah, I missed that. Game changer!
<samueldr>
yeah, latency is an issue here :/
<samueldr>
I poked the lead of that project with a note about the latency issue
<samueldr>
one inconvenient about having a non-elasticsearch data source would be the fuzzy search
<samueldr>
JJJollyjim: add a note about your latencies
LnL is now known as Guest17318
<samueldr>
like, I personally have acceptable latencies and I just hate the change for the instant search :)
<cole-h>
srhb: Ping
<samueldr>
while *you* have a proper *problem*
<samueldr>
and it's a problem I don't like seeing someone having considering the tradeoff was that searches were still fast
<samueldr>
there was live as-you-type search thing that got put on the backburner as it had other issues, but in your particular case it wouldn't help at all
<samueldr>
(oh, and anyone reading, please report issues too or else it'll stay broken for you :))
<JJJollyjim>
ty :)
<JJJollyjim>
also opened a separate issue since the endpoint doesn't have access-control-max-age, doubling the latency

<samueldr>
I'm not involved *directly* with the new search, I was tangent to the new implementation, meaning that I was involved in testing and making sure it at least (to my eye) was 1:1 in feature
<samueldr>
(minus the as-you-type)
<JJJollyjim>
Oh i guess the backend is controlled by a third party
<samueldr>
yeah
<JJJollyjim>
do you have a contact there who might be able to add the header?
<samueldr>
hopefully
<samueldr>
at the very worst it's just elastic search, so other providers are welcome if they are geographically diverse
<samueldr>
(better than locking the implementation in a specific vendor ecosystem)
<JJJollyjim>
hmm
<JJJollyjim>
webassembly a jvm and run elasticsearch in the client? :D
<JJJollyjim>
this will surely solve all the memory usage problems :D
<samueldr>
heh, for options it wouldn't be such an issues, I e.g. lunr could be used too... but whew for the packages!

without cheating (looking it up) what does the <b> html element stand for?

anyhow I am distracted from debugging a broken thing

already yelled at their twitter account, but I'm sure those won't return until monday
<joepie91>
but really, what is wrong with you when you decide to race through a dark residential street so hard that your tires are skipping when you brake because you tried to steer into a dead-end sideroad
<joepie91>
if someone had been standing around the corner, they would now be in the hospital
<joepie91>

<MichaelRaskin>
I wonder if the incentives created by the delivery service make them effectively select for such driving…
<__monty__>
From what I hear about delivery driver jobs that's not unlikely.
<joepie91>
MichaelRaskin: it's not something that commonly happens for grocery delivery services here
<joepie91>
and even then, there is a limit to what is acceptable behaviour
<joepie91>
I can understand someone not waiting at the door for very long because of bad incentives
<joepie91>
but putting people's lives at risk is a whole different ballgame
