gchristensen changed the topic of #nixos-chat to: NixOS but much less topical || https://logs.nix.samueldr.com/nixos-chat
<samueldr> gchristensen: I'm the one that has "legal issues" (though in reality support issues)
<joepie91> you ideally want something they can't trivially remove and say "oops sorry" for :P
<gchristensen> joepie91: the freenode user armijn. he likes software license enforcement things.
<joepie91> oh, right
<samueldr> joepie91: even then, it shipped, the GPLv3 states I need to be able to change the software on it
<joepie91> definitely not enough brain cycles for more than idle chatter right now :P

* joepie91 is having a crappy few days
<joepie91> samueldr: right
<samueldr> which reminds me, I think I saw GPLv3 license in a Cisco-made set-top box for a telco here, IIRC based off of comcast's
<samueldr> though I don't own the box
<samueldr> not saying it's leased, saying I don't have the service :)
<tazjin> pretty sure someone tried to enforce the license against KaiOS before and nothing happened
<tazjin> I remember reading about it
<samueldr> they released stuff
<samueldr> but that's kaiOS and not alcatel
<samueldr> and they released a token gesture
* joepie91 has at least managed to get a Dutch tech news site to stop branding KaiOS as a "successor" of Firefox OS
<samueldr> it doesn't match what is shipped on the one device I got to check out
<samueldr> which I still need to return since I see that alcatel won't play nice
<samueldr> (and the banana hacker stuff doesn't work with it)

<samueldr> (yes, their site is horrible)
<joepie91> samueldr: I was gonna say "it's google sites, of course it's horrible"
<joepie91> and then I clicked it
<joepie91> lol.
<joepie91> the mid-2000s ~hacker~ aesthetic is strong with this one
<samueldr> though the project is quite unique, and... for once... relatively cohesive
<samueldr> they have a bunch of unrelated device
<joepie91> yay for the creativity though? :P
<samueldr> and are working on common solutions
<samueldr> instead of going their own way
<joepie91> huh, nice
<samueldr> don't judge a project by their website :3
<samueldr> it's still a random hodgepodge of stuff, but it's at least relatively factored out in common stuff
<samueldr> (btw I had no interest in KaiOS, it was obviously to try and run mobile-nixos)
<ashkitten> when you said hacker aesthetic idk what i expected but this is extremely a lot
<joepie91> haha
<ashkitten> but honestly i appreciate the matrix being what it is
<ashkitten> especially yk, being written by two trans women
<joepie91> ashkitten: surprisingly many people don't seem to have caught that bit of news
<ashkitten> people don't know?
<ashkitten> lol
<joepie91> yeah
<joepie91> I've had a few people go "wait, really?" at me after mentioning it
<joepie91> I thought it'd gotten fairly decent coverage but apparently not
<ashkitten> huh
<ashkitten> sometimes things just feel like common knowledge but are only really common inside your circles

<gspia> hello, I'd like to use python-package tensorflow/hub but it is not packaged yet. I looked at the docs (didn't work), and then how e.g. tensorflow/probability is packaged. Many of my trials end quite quickly with "No such file or directory 'setup.py'"
<gspia> Any hints on how to try to solve these kind of problems?

<gspia> hmm, never mind, I might got this working now (used tensorflow/estimator as example and added protobuf dep in there)
<eyJhb> Just putting this out here, if anybody have ideas for must-have tools, gadgets, etc. that would be great. It is kinda hard finding tools that somebody at the age of 60, doesn't have
<sphalerite> eyJhb: birthday present?
<eyJhb> sphalerite: yup, two weeks late, and round birthday
<eyJhb> So I am pretty screwed in general
<sphalerite> whoops
<eyJhb> Yuup, and he pretty much has everything. Shopping for dads is generally hard
<sphalerite> make something
<sphalerite> um. I lowered the contrast setting on my monitor and got better contrast.
<sphalerite> and… why does it have a "sharpness" setting..?
<sphalerite> it's a digital signal, is it so hard to just dump the pixels to the LCD? :|
<sphalerite> (colour gamut stuff notwithstanding)

<hyperfekt> I accidentally posted my password in #nixos yesterday and I realized it is because Plasma takes like 5 seconds to unlock <.<
<hyperfekt> KDE is nice but I really can't bear how *slow* it is
<gchristensen> wow
* sphalerite looks at logs
<sphalerite> lol
<hyperfekt> That combined with the default PAM configuration making you wait only after you've entered a wrong password, instead of giving you a timeout after several tries like every normal computer system in existence.
* sphalerit uploaded an image: IMG_20190929_143205.jpg (2091KB) < https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v1/download/matrix.org/aWeTJrBbqNaSbDyEuKUwWJcz >
<sphalerit> why does my external monitor turn Terminus into… this?
<sphalerit> and especially, why does it only do that to the bold-green-on-black and not to the regular white-on-grey above it?
<__monty__> Maybe terminus' bold face isn't up to scratch? Or it doesn't have one and another font is substituted?
<__monty__> I think it's just because terminus isn't all that great : >
<__monty__> #dejavusansmonoorbust
<emily> sphalerit: do you have the right subpixel RGBA antialiasing settings
<sphalerite> emily __monty__: this is specifically the external monitor, it's fine on the laptop monitor. And subpixel stuff won't be happening here since terminus is a pixel font

<evanjs> Didn't think it'd come to this, but I feel like I need to patch my nixpkgs now... https://github.com/tqbl/nixpkgs/commit/eb474ed
<ashkitten> > you're receiving notifications because you're on a team that was mentioned
<{^_^}> undefined variable 'you're' at (string):266:1
<ashkitten> is this my life now?
<evanjs> Unless there's something cleaner than that or this https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/39364#issuecomment-425536054
<__monty__> ashkitten: We should put anyone who mentions a team that shouldn't've been in front of a firing squad.
<ashkitten> seems a little over the top
<evanjs> I don't think it's the first time it's happened, either... I remember seeing an issue in my feed the other week and got soooo confused as I'd never seen it before
<evanjs> Like... did I contribute to this? What? Why? What is this?
<ashkitten> yeah
<infinisil> The first rule of the nixpkgs maintainers team
<infinisil> Is to not talk about the nixpkgs maintainers team
<joepie91> it's the @ room of nixpkgs :P
