<ashkitten>
i've got an interesting idea i wonder if anyone's tried yet. so im sure everyone is aware that changing usernames cleanly is nigh impossible due to many applications hardcoding paths on first use, i wonder if a workaround is possible by setting $HOME to some location that is consistent between users (/run/home, maybe) and that uses some mechanism to always point to the home directory of the uid a program
<ashkitten>
is running under? then presumably the username or home directory doesn't matter and can be changed at any time

Oh.
<Miyu-chan>
Hm.
<Miyu-chan>
Oh. I think I get it.
<Miyu-chan>
Yeah, that seems to make sense.
<srhb>
I have zero nginx servers that don't need 64... :P
<Miyu-chan>
:o
<srhb>
Like, how few vhosts do people usually have?
* Miyu-chan
personally doesn't do networking that much, even if I'm working as a DevOps lmao
<Miyu-chan>
Thank you NixOps for saving me.
<srhb>
Count your blessings :-P
<Miyu-chan>
I only have like 2 vhosts. foo.bar, and git.foo.bar.
* Miyu-chan
shrug
<eyJhb>
I only have 1 normally
<srhb>
I'm surprised. :P
<srhb>
I guess I have a tendency to have a lot of status.foo.bar etc.
<eyJhb>
srhb: one week left! - I have like nothing to host/use it for atm. :p But that is also personally
<srhb>
eyJhb: yessss
<srhb>
So excited :) Also very happy to be lying around in bed at this hour :-P
<eyJhb>
Like I COULD setup a couple, but I usually just use.. the ports :p
<eyJhb>
I can imagine! Must be nice for you to return ;) - I would say the same, but I have somewhat gotten out of bed, and just sat at my PC. So I COULD do the same :p
<srhb>
Almost considered going there to pick up laptop, but got scolded and reminded to not work for free. :P
<eyJhb>
But don't think my project mate would enjoy
<srhb>
haha. Nice :)
<eyJhb>
"THen give me money!!" - srhb :D
<srhb>
:-P
<eyJhb>
Do you have the day off?
<srhb>
All week. Too many hours at $oldjob :)
<srhb>
Had last day this friday. Got some very nice beers as a parting gift.
<eyJhb>
Whaaat, that sounds so nice.. Do you have any plans on what you are going to do this week then?
<eyJhb>
There are _some_ beers in Aalborg as well, I canne garantee they are nice
<srhb>
Play some games, do some release-19.09 work if need be :)
<srhb>
Trying to catch up on the current status of the branch
<eyJhb>
Curious about what games you play :p - Sounds look Gods work if you do so ;) If you're bored there is #69265, just to see if you agree with me on it :D
<eyJhb>
Also! Once you do get to your new job, I have a inquiry/suggestion ;) :D
<srhb>
Feel free to whenever. :) I'll take a look but I'm a bit wary of firewall stuff.
<srhb>
eyJhb: I feel like at that point a number of requests for injecting at arbitrary places of the firewall script are equally valid...
drakonis has joined #nixos-chat
<eyJhb>
srhb: well, it isn't arbitrary, `Additional shell commands executed as part of the firewall initialisation script. These are executed just before the final "reject" firewall rule is added, _so they can be used to allow packets that would otherwise be refused._`, which is what I would like to do :D
<eyJhb>
But good you point it out! I have left comment on the issue now, specifying why I would expect that behaviour :D
drakonis_ has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]
<srhb>
eyJhb: Thanks. :) I really wish we had a better language to describe this (maybe we do?)
<srhb>
As in, I want my firewall rules to be compiled all-at-once and be specified in a language that is order-agnostic.
<eyJhb>
Describe firewalls? Like, before this, after this?
<eyJhb>
I think there are multiple things wrong with the firewall and nat, as e.g. it doesn't use stop commands itself as far as I know :(
<eyJhb>
There probably is some good tools for this. Also it is actually quite hard for NixOS to cleanup iptables it has added itself, as it will not use the previous state on a rebuild. Unless it runs stop on all services in the current config, and then switches and starts again
<srhb>
Yeah, I want something completely declarative
<srhb>
And atomic.
<eyJhb>
Yeah, that might be hard, but maybe ##networking knows something :p Or I can chat up someone at AAU! Also, annoying that the order for starting things are iptables then openvpn, but I see both things being relevant and good..
<joepie91>
tazjin: worth noting that a foundation is not necessarily an "ANBI" ("institution with social purpose") and so it doesn't necessarily qualify for contribution-matching (given that those are usually based on tax benefits)
<tazjin>
joepie91: it's worth a shot though! I've emailed the foundation contact people to hear back. The FSF and several other tech-related foundations have this status, so we'll see
<joepie91>
:)
<emily>
infinisil: beautiful

joepie91: the way it works here is that we work with some company that "vets" organisations that are "nominated" by employees, but I'm not sure how transparent that process will be
<tazjin>
the NixOS Foundation was previously nominated and rejected, but I can't see why so I'm just gonna do it again and see what happens

Then it makes perfect sense!

<Taneb>
I'm struggling to google this, so I'll ask here. If I'm writing myself a systemd service, how should I approach logging such that journald all works properly
<manveru>
Taneb: just write to stdout?

Taneb: what cransom said
<eyJhb>
If everyone did YYYY-MM-DD, so many things would be easier. Not sure all our dates in version numbers are YYYY-MM-DD, some might be YYYY-DD-MM, etc.. Hoping it isn't the case
<samueldr>
the docs say it should be YYYY-MM-DD
<cransom>
if it's YYYY-DD-MM, that person is mad.
<samueldr>
maybe add a "date is screwey" check if MM > 12
<cransom>
ah. yes. the excursion to home depot 2 blocks away where someone was going to claim my plywood and 2x4s were going to fly away and murder everyone.
<eyJhb>
I do not blame them for thinking that
<eyJhb>
But then again, here in Denmark Jylland, we have our trailers which... are not always safe or driven the speed limit on the highway
<cransom>
the car did not make it over 50kph. had it been the freeway, i would have had more concern.
<eyJhb>
It is not uncommon to see 110 km/h or 130 km/h when the speed limit is 80 here...
<eyJhb>
I wouldn't have dared so either cransom, have tried that before, no fun
