<colemickens>
any idea what expectations should be regarding pinebook pro and external displays?
<DigitalKiwi>
if you expect nothing then you won't be disappointed

colemickens: with a USB-C -> hdmi adaptor, I've had mixed results. One screen works fairly consistently, another has worked in the past but doesn't seem to want to work at the moment.
<samueldr>
colemickens: users have it working, but make sure it's eDP and not a thunderbolt dock thing
<samueldr>
though I don't know the kernel details they're using
<samueldr>
(and note that my repo is stale as stale can be)
<samueldr>
to pass RYF they had to hide the binary blob of the DDR4 ram training
zupo has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<samueldr>
since it's hidden, it's now respecting your freedom
<ashkitten>
lol

you can't see it it can't harm you

<samueldr>
otherwise, i.MXM8 in theory should have had better mainline drivers I think
* ashkitten
shoves ucode blobs in the closet
<samueldr>
but there's so few i.MXM8 devices floating around that in practice I think it ends up that A64 drivers are better
quinn has joined #nixos-aarch64
<ashkitten>
pine64 community seems pretty focused on writing replacement drivers for anything proprietary which is nice
<samueldr>
I *think* the premise was that the graphics driver were going to be good
<samueldr>
yeah
<samueldr>
but it turns out A64 is good too
<samueldr>
*maybe* the i.MXM8 is a bit faster benchmark-wise
<samueldr>
I don't know anything really about that
<ashkitten>
pine64 dynamic seems like they give you a phone, it's not specifically chosen for libre parts, you are expected to make it work so everyone can have a nice thing in the future
<samueldr>
it is unknown if its power consumption will be better in the end
<ashkitten>
which i like
<samueldr>
not just phones
<samueldr>
you know about their "challenges"?
<ashkitten>
right
<ashkitten>
uhh no
<samueldr>
they're putting random wi-fi hardware on developer boards so developers can "crack" them into more useful devices for open source uses
<ashkitten>
oh right is that the thing where they make a piece of hardware available cheaply and challenge the community to write a driver supporting it
<samueldr>
I guess they're tired of realtek's bad hw
<ashkitten>
it's a very cool dynamic. i think pine64 taking arbitrary hardware and turning it into open source drivers is honestly more effective than purism seeking out niche companies that are willing to officially support open source
<samueldr>
pinetime is similar, work on a basic hw platform, leave software to the community
<samueldr>
sure, it sucks if you want to be an end-user
<samueldr>
yep
<ashkitten>
i'm wearing my pinetime right now
<samueldr>
neat!
<samueldr>
I think that *knowing that* they're amazing
<samueldr>
but if you intend to be just an end-user, you might have trouble overall
<ashkitten>
it's not connected to my phone because it disconnects sometimes and fails to reconnect until a reboot
<samueldr>
you have to figure out your... uh... non-vendor to get software from
<samueldr>
I was keeping it down, but I'm excited about an android wear device coming to me
<samueldr>
not sure anything really useful will come of it
<ashkitten>
one of the neat things about pinetime is it's a very similar hw platform to some other watches out there
<ashkitten>
so pinetime development helps other watch development
<samueldr>
yep
<samueldr>
(AFAIK don't ever hope to see Linux on those)
<ashkitten>
well yes, they're tiny microcontrollers
<samueldr>
yep
<ashkitten>
but that's more than suitable for a watch
<samueldr>
sorry, I wanted to prefix that for *anyone not already knowing*
<ashkitten>
oh, yeah
<samueldr>
while android wear devices run Linux
<samueldr>
I took a few hours to research in depth the specific model I got
<samueldr>
though, being armv7l, and... a watch... it's going to be quite something
<ashkitten>
i don't need to run apps on my watch or anything
