<cole-h>
joepie91: What even are those? Are those, like, flat USBs?
<cole-h>
:P
<joepie91>
lol
<joepie91>
cole-h: yeah, with a special "read-only" feature!
<gchristensen>
handy!
<cole-h>
That actually got me when I was younger. "What do you mean I can't re-burn a CD?"
<cole-h>
We had none of those fancy reburnable discs
<joepie91>
but yeah, these are all magazine cover discs (ie. shovelware discs, ie. little time capsules) from the early 2000s
<joepie91>
in surprisingly good condition
<joepie91>
but definitely nearing the end of their projected lifespan
<joepie91>
:P
<cole-h>
joepie91++
<{^_^}>
joepie91's karma got increased to 9
<lovesegfault>
gchristensen: do you want me to:
<lovesegfault>
1. Write a GH actions yaml
<lovesegfault>
2. Write a Nix generator for the GH actions yaml
<lovesegfault>
I usually do 2. because I rather write Nix than yaml
<joepie91>
cole-h: also this queue was the result of someone literally shipping me a box of shovelware discs :D quite a few years ago, but never got around to it for personal reasons
<joepie91>
now finally getting it sorted
<cole-h>
Haha, nice
<gchristensen>
lovesegfault: up to you, but if you go #2, make it part of the CI to validate that the one stored in the repo is up to date
<lovesegfault>
π€
<joepie91>
the disc scanning part is the most annoying, it's one of those processes that's just annoying enough for it to not be nice doing it by hand, but not quite annoying enough to spend the engineering effort automating it
<gchristensen>
lovesegfault: hm?
<lovesegfault>
I'm thinking how to do that
<joepie91>
and it involves 4 pieces of software: gnome-simple-scan, xpdf (pdfimages), gthumb, and GIMP
<gchristensen>
lovesegfault: usually update it, and diff
<joepie91>
cole-h: ^ original scan on the left, result on the right
<cole-h>
joepie91: Ahhh, I was about to ask why the last 3 were necessary
<lovesegfault>
gchristensen: y'all should pin your stuff with niv
<lovesegfault>
cole-h: I got a title for that r13y blog post btw
<lovesegfault>
it'll be called "Faking Flakes"
<cole-h>
π
<joepie91>
cole-h: so my libsane bindings are inexplicably broken, so I can't use my batch-scanning script, so I'm stuck using gnome-simple-scan (which has a workable batch scanning UI) but it produces PDFs rather than images, so I need to extract the raw scans with pdfimages, and then I use gthumb to crop and rotate (it has a fantastic rotate tool; draw a line parallel to a straight edge on the image, and it reorients the entire image around that
<joepie91>
line), and then finally GIMP to fill up the new black spots after rotation and remove any other artifacts
<cole-h>
lovesegfault: Why not "Fake Flakes"
<cole-h>
joepie91: Wow, that is pretty involved
<lovesegfault>
cole-h: it's a light reference to "trusting trust"
<cole-h>
I can see why you only just now got around to it :P
<joepie91>
cole-h: yeah, but none of those steps are involved *enough* to spend time automating the slightly-annoying-to-automate bits :P
<joepie91>
such as object recognition, auto-rotate, etc.
<cole-h>
lovesegfault: I've never heard that phrase before :D I do like the alliteration
<lovesegfault>
cole-h: it's a famous paper on compilers
<joepie91>
cole-h: so this is sitting in that annoying valley between manual work and automation where both options kinda suck for different reasons...
<cole-h>
Oh man, academic papers. I'm really bad at reading those because the text is so tiny and close together :(
<gchristensen>
lovesegfault: I think you need to enable it for PRs too?
<lovesegfault>
gchristensen: Ah, yes!
<gchristensen>
lovesegfault: btw I'm going to replace the building-a-script-to-copy-the-output thing with just building the output, and an instruction to copy in to place
<lovesegfault>
gchristensen: sounds good, no objections

<Taneb>
The whole thing's making me anxious
malSet has joined #nixos-chat
<monsieurp>
why?
<Taneb>
I have multiple elderly relatives with various pre-existing conditions, my partner lives in north Italy, and I'm really not set up to self-isolate for two weeks if I need to
<monsieurp>
influenza has been killing more people in the US in 6 months than the coronavirus
<monsieurp>
Flu season is hitting its stride right now in the US. So far, the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.
<monsieurp>
The CDC also estimates that up to 31 million Americans have caught the flu this season, with 210,000 to 370,000 flu sufferers hospitalized because of the virus.
<Taneb>
And "You're more likely to die of another reason" isn't going to make me any less anxious
malSet has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<monsieurp>
no reason to freak out if you're young and healthy (which you probably are since you're here on IRC and hacking on NixOS)
<monsieurp>
if you're 80 yo+, well maybe it's time to think about writing down your will
<Taneb>
Did you even read the message where I said why I'm freaking out?
<monsieurp>
yes
<Taneb>
Where did I mention my own health?
<monsieurp>
nowhere
<monsieurp>
that's why I'm making assumptions
<monsieurp>
"if"
<Taneb>
So, what good do you think reassuring me about my health is going to do?

the problem is ncov has much higher mortality potential?
<monsieurp>
versus what? influenza? car accidents?
<pie_[bnc]>
well, i meant influenza but
<__monty__>
monsieurp: Those influenza v. covid-19 stats are pretty useless. If anything you should look at the period the virus was present in the US, not several months before it hit. The other problem is that influenza was already present throughout the population.
<pie_[bnc]>
__monty__: btw im quite intrigured by the implications of the latter half of that

i dont really know how the dynamics of this works, but how long is a society going to have to maintain voluntary self quarantine to acquire sufficient herd immunity or something?
<Taneb>
The idea with the quarantines is to slow down the infenctions enough that hospitals have the bed bandwidth to cope

malSet has joined #nixos-chat
<pie_[bnc]>
Taneb: im agreeing
<Taneb>
So, it depends on the local hospitals, I guess
<monsieurp>
__monty__: from a sanitary perspective, you might be right. however I'm more interested in how markets, and the general feeling across the population, react. so far, it's been only a total freak out. since I've already shown the official numbers of people dying from influenza in the US is much higher than Covid-19, why is there no freak out from the market about these numbers?
<monsieurp>
weird, no?
malSet has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<pie_[bnc]>
markets freak out because people freak out
* pie_[bnc]
being galaxy brain: markets arent about value but perception of value
<pie_[bnc]>
hot take: all the politicians are old people and they dont want to die of ncov
<__monty__>
It's not weird imo. The rate of people dying's much higher.

<joepie91>
cole-h: like all DRM-esque things, the use of that crapware is symptomatic of a deeper issue of "trying to solve the wrong problem", of course... something something standardized testing
<cole-h>
"Prevent cheating" lol
<cole-h>
You can't force me to record myself when I don't have a webcam. And then I can just use my notes/phone to look shit up
<joepie91>
:/
<joepie91>
cole-h: yeah, but that's my point, having that problem means that your educational system is broken :)
* joepie91
fosters a burning hate for standardized testing and memorization-based "education"
* eyJhb
fosters a burning hate for tests.
<joepie91>
eyJhb: the school kind or the software kind? :P
<cole-h>
Yes
<cole-h>
Good news! Got a fast response from the prof: "If any students canβt install Respondus, I will not use it for the test."
<drakonis>
nice.
<cole-h>
He's really good about this kind of thing; I'm glad
<joepie91>
cole-h: nice!
<eyJhb>
joepie91: why not both? :D
<joepie91>
eyJhb: inclusive or is a valid answer :P
<joepie91>
more seriously: I do think that "tests" as a concept in and of itself are useful in education... just a) not memorization-based, and b) as a tool to serve the student, not to serve the educational body
<joepie91>
ie. they are useful for someone to get a handle on their own progress and capabilities, if they are designed around capabilities
<joepie91>
and don't involve grading
<eyJhb>
joepie91: you would hate the medical study then
<eyJhb>
All memorised BS.
<eyJhb>
Same for law
<cransom>
spouse was talking about some midterm testing and the requirements were things like having an active webcam at all times, having to point it around the room before starting ... if needing a bio break, getting permission and then being timed.
<joepie91>
eyJhb: quite possibly :)
<joepie91>
eyJhb: but I also hate the primary + high school-level education system in general, because it is entirely based around this virtually everywhere
<cole-h>
Yep. Most of my classes have been based around memorization. One of my other CS classes said our midterm was "open everything" except friends -- aka we could Google whatever
<cole-h>
"Because that's what it's like in the real world"
<cole-h>
Coolest prof I've ever had
<joepie91>
cole-h: that's a much better approach :)
<joepie91>
also, woo! finished cropping and rotating another batch of CD scans!
<cole-h>
How many more to go?
<joepie91>
cole-h: about 12cm of disks, so I think that translates to about 120 more discs?
<joepie91>
this batch was 35 discs
<cole-h>
How many have you gone through so far? That's a ton
<joepie91>
well, cropping + rotating + imaging for those 35, still need to post-process the disc scans and upload them
<joepie91>
I think I completely finished (scan + crop + rotate + image + postprocess + upload) like 11 discs yesterday?
