<ashkitten> gchristensen: turns out even if you set the nice levels to max it doesn't help if your cpus are pinned to 100%
<ashkitten> lol
<gchristensen> heh
<samueldr> nice levels may do nothing
* samueldr digs for articles
<gchristensen> you might need ionicetoo
<samueldr> that's another issues yeah
<samueldr> urgh, can't find what I have in mind right now
<samueldr> nice being "just a word"
<samueldr> going from memory then, so expect some wrongness
<samueldr> it's something about a setting that is set by default that makes nice levels only apply inside their own process groups or something like that
<gchristensen> huh
* samueldr would like to find that thread back
<samueldr> no idea where it was even :/
<samueldr> though there's an edit now

<eyJhb> samueldr: then you are dad ready with your puns and jokes :p

<samueldr> like terribly witty and groanful
<samueldr> (and I did the right thing and shared it forcefully to friends at ishouldbeasleep o'clock)
<samueldr> well, shared it in a way that wouldn't wake them up
<eyJhb> Normally you need to call them, and when they pick up you say "Can't sleep either huh?"
<eyJhb> :D
<samueldr> though it's one that only lands in french
<eyJhb> Are you french as well samueldr ?
<eyJhb> Impossible
<samueldr> « un verger, en automne, est-ce qu'on appelle ça un oranger? »
<eyJhb> Ehm
<samueldr> nope
<eyJhb> When I read it, I have a feeling of.. vegetables, automobiles and oranges
<samueldr> not even european
<eyJhb> Canada?
<samueldr> though Québec is a french-speaking part of Canada
<samueldr> yes
<eyJhb> You're enforcing the Canada stereotype samueldr :p
<samueldr> the what?
<eyJhb> stereotype*? Canadians being nice basically
<samueldr> yeah, that one I think is right, but there are other stereotypes that differs greatly in Québec compared to other parts :)
<samueldr> in other news, yay nosebleed 30 mins in the coach ride
<samueldr> this is gonna get interesting
<eyJhb> samueldr: don't mind me tagging you in a issue on GitLab btw... :p - What, why?
<eyJhb> And also, what stereotypes??
<samueldr> nose bleed? no idea, when I was little it happened all the time, though here I'm pretty sure it's the "bad" air from the coach nixed with A/C *and* heat from the coache, in addition to fun automnal allergies' tail end
<samueldr> "aboot", not exactly true across canada, and Québec ESL definitely don't learn canadian english
<eyJhb> Makes sense about the nose bleed then I guess, but seems like you're in for a long ride! :( - Ah, didn't really think of that only 'sorry' part
<samueldr> and even then, the "sorry" bit imo is separate from the being nice part
<eyJhb> Though I myself have picked up the Afrikaans "Ja", which is pretty much "Jahh"
<eyJhb> So basically, people say sorry but are still dicks about it?
<eyJhb> ^ pretend it as a PG message above
<samueldr> nah, that not all of those that are nice a profusely apologetics
<eyJhb> Ahh, makes sense :D
<eyJhb> Canada is a place I would want to visit at some point. Seems like a nice place in general
<__monty__> samueldr: Nosebleeds, eh?
<eyJhb> But, maybe not the french part, except if they can live with me not speaking french
<__monty__> I tend to get them with strong temperature deltas.
<samueldr> eyJhb: I belive they're likely to be fine with you not speaking french
<eyJhb> +1 for that :p
<samueldr> eyJhb: the only "anti english" movements there could be about now are for those establishing themselves in Québec, to live, and not doing any efforts
<samueldr> and it's not really anti english
<__monty__> Best remedy ime is to squeeze the nose shut right under the boney part and keep the head tilted forward.
<samueldr> __monty__: no need for remedies
<eyJhb> Well, I think that is the same for most countries. I frown upon that myself in Denmark as well
<samueldr> got enough years to know the best ways
<samueldr> and the best way is the most gruesome way, but might not be possible in all situations
<samueldr> you need to be able to wash up
<eyJhb> I don't like where this is going
<samueldr> (face and hands, likely)
<samueldr> blow your nose to dislodge what is likely keeping that huge nosebleed open
<samueldr> works for when it's a huge nosebleed
<__monty__> Not sure what you're talking about. Getting the blood clotted is step one.
<samueldr> and well... you can guess where this is going
<samueldr> yes, but before that, you need to clear the way
<__monty__> I've never had a nosebleed happen because something was lodged up there.
<samueldr> you always have stuff in the nose
<samueldr> since an MD recommended this, I saw the vast difference it makes for those big nosebleeds
<__monty__> Still not sure what you're talking about.
<samueldr> if it's minor, it won't make a difference in my experience
<eyJhb> I think I am o/ from this :p I hate everything nose related after some incidents :| Had a nosebleed for 1 week because of operation at some point.
<__monty__> TMI warning, stop reading NOW if you don't like disgusting stories. Have you had one of those snot/blood slugs yet? Felt oddly satisfying to pull that one out.
<ashkitten> i was gonna complain about upnp but y'all are taking about nosebleeds
<__monty__> UPnP's the best.
<samueldr> __monty__: those were the usual wiith great frequency when I was little
<ashkitten> i dont understand the upnp ecosystem
<ashkitten> theres like
<eyJhb> samueldr, __monty__ ever tried the snot vaccum?
<samueldr> nope
<ashkitten> is there even an open source reference implementation
<eyJhb> That thing HURTS like hell, but it does the job very very well
<eyJhb> Also, cameras up ones nose sucks as well.
<samueldr> I think there are several of different parts of UPNP, but I think UPNP is like a big ball of smaller bits, right?
<samueldr> like, there's upnp for getting your networking pwnd
<samueldr> and there's upnp for getting media from place to place
<ashkitten> theres supposedly something called openhome which is a set of extensions by some company called linn or whatever i guess?
<ashkitten> and then theres dlna which i cant tell how that fits in. it supposedly encompasses upnp and some other protocols but is stricter but you have to be part of the org to even get the specs and that costs money?
<ashkitten> also the upnp docs dont feel like theyre written for programmers. theyre hard to read at least for me and are not very straight to the point of "heres the basic protocol"
<ashkitten> i guess thats because everything is implemented on like http multicast or something lol
<ashkitten> maybe im just bad at reading
<ashkitten> imagine how much easier itd have been if google had used upnp instead of their own chromecast protocol, and then we'd have lots of good implementations of every part of it
<ashkitten> anyways ive been using bubbleupnp and it works okay i guess
<ashkitten> ui kinda could use work
<__monty__> What are you using UPnP for?
<lopsided98> I discovered a while ago that my crappy ISP router published network traffic stats over UPnP
<lopsided98> except I quickly noticed that the data had no correlation with the actual traffic flowing through the network
<lopsided98> I still have no idea what it was actually keeping track of, or even what the units were

<flokli> is that enough to mark a "hacktoberfest PR" as invalid? https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/71715
<{^_^}> #71715 (by Divakar8378, 23 minutes ago, closed): Name
<__monty__> Wow, talk about low effort.
<lassulus> some people are really low on tshirts
<__monty__> Still, ton of easy improvements to be found in nixpkgs.
<__monty__> flokli: As I read the faq the label should be literally "invalid", not just contain it.
<flokli> I'm not sure if we should create a new "invalid" label, just to make sure somebody doesn't get the shirt
<flokli> I mean, I don't want to encourage spamming nixpkgs, but
<lassulus> well if we let the low effort trolls pass to much, maybe noone gets a tshirt who contributes to nixos one day
<flokli> right. I'm low on hacktoberfest shirts too. label created :-D
<etu> Does hacktoberfest actually care about such labels?
<gchristensen> yes
<etu> Ok, cool
<gchristensen> " If a maintainer reports your pull request as invalid or behavior not in line with the project’s code of conduct, you will be ineligible to participate."
<etu> Very nice :)
<gchristensen> and yes, they've clarified with me that it must be the exact label "invalid"
<etu> I got one of those shirts from last year. I find it ugly but it's good enough for the gym. But I see a guy at the office wearing that same shirt at work which is kinda weird to me :D
<__monty__> Just ordered mine : )

<infinisil> Remember how I was complaining about my SSD failing a month ago or so?
<infinisil> Somebody at some point told me that it might just be a loose contact
<infinisil> I didn't bother to check it until today
<infinisil> And it very much looks like it was a loose contact!
<infinisil> When I opened the tower and took my 10 minutes to figure out where the SSD is, then another 10 minutes to see how to disconnect it, I found that the cable it was connected to was kind of bent a bit
<infinisil> !
<infinisil> -10 points to the shop I bought this machine at
<__monty__> That's a bit harsh. It's very difficult to ensure everything stays in place during transport.
<infinisil> __monty__: It was physically impossible for the connection/cable not to be bent actually
<__monty__> Sata cables are normally pretty flexible though.
<__monty__> And same thing for power.
<infinisil> Ah the other cable was power! That makes sense
<infinisil> But yeah it was the SATA cable connector thing that was bent
<infinisil> Because there was stuff in the way so the white thing couldn't be straight
<__monty__> The actual connector? o.O
<infinisil> Yeah it wasn't the cable, the white connector thing
<infinisil> I should've taken a picture

<ashkitten> __monty__: i'm using upnp to play music on my computer speakers and the tv
<ashkitten> it's.. really janky sometimes, but works mostly
<ashkitten> upnp media streaming seems to be very latency sensitive which is detrimental when i'm pulling audio from youtube and stuff, it gets kinda unresponsive if i try to seek through the track
<__monty__> Hmm, didn't know that was a thing. Only use I have for it so far is opening ports on my router.
waleee-cl has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<ashkitten> i just updated gmrender-resurrect in nixpkgs so i could start using it (pr still needs review, wink wink) and it's really nice. upnp renderer daemon just sits in the background and lets me play things to it from a control point
