Ugh. The restore process for iOS apparently doesn't restore apps; it just tells the phone to install the apps itself from the app store. Problem is, there much be some kind of bug because I can't download like 90% of my apps on the new phone for some reason.

a quick hack if you wanted to see themes available `nix-locate -r 'share/themes/[^/]+/gtk-2'` (and change gtk-2 for other relevant stuff)

<tilpner>
Hey gchristensen, please excuse the continued poking, but I'd like a "oh, I forgot about that", or a "snooze, tilpner" on grahamc/r13y.com#9 :)

hecko, thanks to scrcpy i was able to get all the data off my phone when the screen died
<samueldr>
:o nice!
<samueldr>
I figure it's because you already had adb enabled and approved for your computer, right?
<samueldr>
(scrcpy is an amazing piece of software, for those who don't know it, streaming an android device's screen via adb)
<samueldr>
not just the display, but mouse/keyboard input too
__monty__ has quit [Quit: leaving]
<ashkitten>
samueldr: yeah, i already had done that, luckily
<ashkitten>
for some reason it's not showing up to adb now, i don't know what happened. i've already got all the data i wanted off of it, though
<ashkitten>
got an adb backup including everything but system apps, one including everything plus system apps, and a copy of everything in /sdcard
<ashkitten>
and a new pixel xl on its way from ebay, it should be here thursday
<ashkitten>
if this phone had died 3 weeks from now i'd probably already have my cosmo communicator
<samueldr>
bad timing :/
<samueldr>
though having another phone will allow you more leeway in experimenting with either of them
<MichaelRaskin>
ashkitten: re: cosmo — no, you wouldn't
<samueldr>
bad news from cosmo?
<samueldr>
uh, planet computers
<ashkitten>
they said a couple weeks ago the boards are all manufactured, they're just being assembled and quality checked so i figure that'd take a few weeks plus shipping
<MichaelRaskin>
More like one week ago
<MichaelRaskin>
And that was first batch
<MichaelRaskin>
Ahahaahahahaa
<MichaelRaskin>
There is a fresh update. They didn't fully appreciate how Chine National Day works. Answer: everything shuts down
<samueldr>
for a full week
<samueldr>
my pinebook pro is (likely) hostage of their golden week
<MichaelRaskin>
China doesn't do halfmeasures, you know
<samueldr>
hostage isn't exactly the fair word though :)
<MichaelRaskin>
Indeed, there is no set of demands you can satisfy to change the situation
<ashkitten>
okay, well anyways it's poor timing that i've got a phone on the way and still have to buy another in the meantime
<samueldr>
yeah, that's a bummer :|
<samueldr>
what's the phone that broke?
<ashkitten>
pixel xl
<samueldr>
ah, so like for like
<ashkitten>
i dropped it flat on its screen, which immediately stopped responding properly to touch... then over the course of the day the screen degraded until it doesn't display anything anymore
<ashkitten>
was already cracked but was working fine before
<ashkitten>
honestly i'm not too upset because i figure theres nothing i couldve done about it, and another one off ebay was only $140
<ashkitten>
which would've screwed me out of a week of food earlier this year, but i can take the hit now
<ashkitten>
pixel xl is a good phone for cheap tbh. got the current one after my galaxy s6 active died out of nowhere
<ashkitten>
was approx $230 at the time iirc
<MichaelRaskin>
Fortunately, my Huawei only dies battery-wise…
<MichaelRaskin>
And the situation doesn't seem to deteriorate too much
<MichaelRaskin>
(Ahaha, I can say it is Y6, but I cannot reasonably define _which_ Y6)
<MichaelRaskin>
But non-Y6-owners don't recognise this notation, I guess.
<samueldr>
eh, it gave relevant results in searching, and it's something I would use as a name
<MichaelRaskin>
Also, I heard that one of the indices of Y6 of my generation is _also_ called Honor 4A
<samueldr>
like the t959d instead of "samsung galaxy S Fascinate (Telus)" which is different from the fascinate from the us carrier, and IIRC more like the vibrant from us carriers, while the vibrant from canadian carriers was like the fascinate from american carriers
<samueldr>
yes, the situation was *way* worse back in early android years in north america
<samueldr>
you often could fine 8+ variants of the "same phone", all slightly different, and not compatible across roms :/
<MichaelRaskin>
Samsung still ships Galaxies split between Qualcomm and Exynos
<samueldr>
yeah
<samueldr>
annoys me a bunch :/
<MichaelRaskin>
Apparently _unlockability_ can differ
<samueldr>
it does
<MichaelRaskin>
And apparently they are not even perfectly segregated by country
<samueldr>
what angle are you going on with that?
<MichaelRaskin>
You were saying that things got much better!
<samueldr>
oh, yes
<samueldr>
better
<samueldr>
now there's only 2 variants in north america
<samueldr>
I'm not saying things are good! :)
<MichaelRaskin>
Which just happen to be so different that it doesn't matter there are no additional ones
<samueldr>
in reality the two variants are basically the same, with minor variants for the bands, but the same OS
<MichaelRaskin>
Well, different builds are needed
<samueldr>
between exynos vs. qcom yeah, but not between qcom variants for the latest models AFAIK
<MichaelRaskin>
I don't remember where both major kinds are in the same market this release
<samueldr>
S9/s10 AFAIK the exynos is non-china non-america, snapdragon in america and china
<samueldr>
though I would say [citation needed] for australia
<samueldr>
AFAIUI, through unverified accounts, it's supposedly qualcomm not playing nice, and entrenching proprietary and patented technologies in the standards in use in north america
<samueldr>
just verified my infos for bootloader unlock, it's the canadian and USA variants that are not unlockable; the china/latin america one supposedly is
<gchristensen>
I think I've asked this before (apologies) but is there a nice oss program for syncing photos and videos off iphone to a linux host?
<gchristensen>
(automatically, not one-time)

<gchristensen>
pass
<samueldr>
depends, the maybe encryption failed and plain text got through?
<gchristensen>
yikes good point
<aanderse>
:p
<MichaelRaskin>
Attempting to use encryption in this room would be a failure _before_ the test, though
