People caring about ddevault's opinions~
<simpson>
Maybe I shouldn't say that.

I'd not go so far as to say he has any kind of authority over what should be done, but it's at least worth listening to

That's fair. I know them as remarkably toxic, but that's a personal opinion, and consequently people shouldn't care about it.

The cloud~
<simpson>
Cloud vendors have to divvy a massive hoard of computational resources amongst many mutually-untrusting actors.
<Arahael>
Yes, but they do so using kvm, docker, vmware, zen, etc.
<simpson>
And then they get to have reboot parades.
<Arahael>
That they do.

eh

that's something they'll probably avoid more over time

GCP can do pretty fancy VM migration I think
<simpson>
For their users, yes, but the underlying machines themselves have to be rebooted in order to do hypervisor upgrades.
<emily>
sure
<emily>
I mean, to an extent, also.
<Arahael>
Typical practice in Amazon is to assume that the instances are epheremal.
<Arahael>
And you cope with that accordingly.
<Arahael>
(This has implications - if you can cope with it, then being able to scale up and down tends to be simpler, but that's a separate issue)

dwarf-fortress

lassulus: I should learn that game. Have you tried RimWorld? Any comparison? (I'm also thinking of getting that, but meh, don't want to buy a new game just yet)
<lassulus>
I've just watched someone else play rimworld, looked similiar but less feature rich. Maybe a longer tech-tree, but I didn't watched that far.
<lassulus>
afair you also can't dig down in rimworld, so you lose the more interesting features of architecture like towers, pyrsmids, etc.
<Arahael>
Ah, interesting point.
mmercier has quit [Ping timeout: 276 seconds]
<joepie91>
rimworld is definitely less in-depth than dwarf fortress, but also much more accessible
<joepie91>
also, rimworld has an aspect of strategic warfare that I think dwarf fortress lacks
<joepie91>
cc lassulus Arahael
<joepie91>
(also, rimworld is indeed single-layer)
<joepie91>
can strongly recommend buying it though :P but only do so when you have a weekend to spare

Rimworld for when you can't stop yourself for cheesing Dwarf Fortress
<srhb>
s/for/from
<Arahael>
joepie91: Nice.
<joepie91>
I do strongly recommend investigating mods for rimworld though; the mod system is pretty stable (I more or less arbitrarily chucked like 50 different mods at it, and only one of them gave me any trouble at all)
<joepie91>
and it significantly expands the gameplay
<Arahael>
Wow, so dwarf fortress is multiplayer?
<srhb>
Agreed, the mods are great
<srhb>
Arahael: Not that I know. Would be awesome though
<srhb>
I think it's more or less impossible with the current architecture of the game
<srhb>
(Go on raids to other peoples' fortresses, would be really cool)
<joepie91>
also, something that surprised me about rimworld mods is how well they fit in aesthetically with the base game
<joepie91>
the sore-thumb problem seems to be almost entirely absent
<joepie91>
not sure why
<srhb>
Maybe it's just the overall aesthetic of the game that makes it easy to fit something in?
<clever>
and then normal syslog-ng stuff to filter that source and route it to files
<gchristensen>
busybox and sysklogd both seem to want to make socket files and pid files, I'll check rsyslog
<ekleog>
gchristensen: I don't really see why netcat -u wouldn't be adequate?
<ekleog>
like, it's literally made for that
<ekleog>
(unless you want to prefix by the source host or similar?)

using `netcat -lup 1514` and then `echo hi | logger -n 127.0.0.1 -P 1514; echo there | logger -n 127.0.0.1 -P 1514` "there" doesn't show up
<clever>
gchristensen: nixos firewall?
<gchristensen>
no, "hi" shows up but "there" doesn't
<andi->
gchristensen: -k on openbsd fixes that
<gchristensen>
maybe socat is better so I can handle >1 stream at once
<andi->
openbsd netcat that is.. wifi breaks my typing -.-
<joepie91>
I'm getting a distinct "don't let the door hit you on the way out" vibe here :P
<clever>
joepie91: yeah
<srhb>
joepie91: Followed by someone helpfully slamming it into them, yes. :P
<gchristensen>
ok so `nc -dklun 1514` is almost perfect, however it emits messages without any new-lines between messages, which seems tricky to deal with
<joepie91>
gchristensen: presumably there's a boundary character in the protocol that indicates the end or start of a message - pipe it through `tr` such that it replaces that?
* joepie91
carefully places syslog in the "toxic, do not touch" bucket
<clever>
lol
Synthetica has quit [Quit: Connection closed for inactivity]
<clever>
long ago, i configured syslog to merge all machines into a single log file
<gchristensen>
also the "Consequently, RFC 3164 describes no specific elements inside asyslog message. It states that any message destined to the syslogUDP port must be treated as a syslog message, no matter what itsformat or content is." part
<joepie91>
it's... at least UDP, I guess
<clever>
then i forgot, and confused myself because sshd failures for every box went to a single log
<gchristensen>
I could tr < \n :)
<gchristensen>
oh what the heck, I'll just do that.
