eyJhb: now imagine having 5 hours of "sprint change events" on teams, mostly continous
<eyJhb>
lovesegfault: Thanks!! :D Will look into that!
<eyJhb>
ar: I am mostly imagining me jumping out the window at that point
<eyJhb>
If I had to have that long meetings, I will just abuse my work PC for that. :D
<eyJhb>
Wondering if I can cgroup/something like that, a specific tab in Chromium?

<ar>
eyJhb: i only use the company-issued laptop for teams, and there's some other things running there that kill performance too
<eyJhb>
ar: Ahh, the company trojans, right? ;) :p
<ar>
eyJhb: also, the company issued laptop runs windows, and at the moment 1 core is pegged with "windows driver foundation - user-mode driver framework host process"
<ar>
i think this might be related to the fact that the "docking station" is a displaylink-based piece of crap, and i have 2 4k screens attached to it ;)
<eyJhb>
ar: !!!
<eyJhb>
You have said the cursed word!
<ar>
the "d" or "w" word?
* eyJhb
*hisses*
<eyJhb>
the "d" word. Windows is also a scary word, but the other is worse :(
<ar>
i consider both of them cursed
<eyJhb>
s/Windows/"w"/ then :D
<eyJhb>
DisplayLink is so hella cursed. It barely functions, and when it doesn't anymore, then you are screwed
<eyJhb>
Because the logs are... encrypted.
<eyJhb>
Which is the biggest d*** move...
<eyJhb>
Wondering if someone somewhere is trying to take them to court for it
<lovesegfault>

<eyJhb>
I should make a list...
<ar>
eyJhb: my private laptop checks those checkboxes ;)
<eyJhb>
ar: Which one is it?
* lovesegfault
just finished building a desktop
<ar>
eyJhb: Thinkpad X13
<eyJhb>

YOU
<eyJhb>
Stop checking all the boxes ar .
<eyJhb>
Thunderbolt 3 as well?
<ar>
no :(
<eyJhb>
HA!
<eyJhb>
:D
<ar>
but with 4750U and 32G of (sadly, non-upgradable) ram
<eyJhb>
What does it have then?
<lovesegfault>
gotta wait for usb4
<eyJhb>
Non-upgradeable + non-replaceable I guess?
<Ke>
it works transitively, you need to wait for USBN
<eyJhb>
I want it
<eyJhb>
USB(N+1)?
<ar>
eyJhb: i don't expect amd-based thinkpads to have usb4 until 2022
<Ke>
where N -> \inf obviously
<Ke>
yes
<eyJhb>
ar: I am more of an Intel man :D
<eyJhb>
Ke: It will be a huge upgrade either way :P
<eyJhb>
But expensive as hell.. At that point my phone should also be replaced.
<ar>
eyJhb: well, getting rid of intel cpu in a laptop was a "goal" for me
<eyJhb>
How come ar ?
<ar>
eyJhb: not an intel fan
<eyJhb>
:o Shame
<eyJhb>
I have been a Intel fan since AMD couldn't performe at all. They threw a BUNCH of cores in your face, that was about as powerfull as a potato..
<eyJhb>
But that has changed as far as I have heard
<eyJhb>
*not to AMD bash, just my experience from running SRCDS servers many years ago :D
<ar>
sure, bulldozer wasn't their brightest moment
<ar>
but then zen happened. and then zen2, and now zen3, and now you get more faster cores in smaller power envelope ;)
<eyJhb>
It is waaaaay back in 2008 I think I used it... :D
<eyJhb>
But I seem to remember AMD denying that some of the same faults that affected Intel affected them as well
<eyJhb>
+ I have not heard good about the build quality.. A lot of dead-on-arrival CPUs :/
<lovesegfault>
don't be like me eyJhb, I remember saying "i'll wait until intel 10nm to get a new laptop"
<lovesegfault>
still waiting
<lovesegfault>
I went to college, got a job, got married, moved countries twice, still waiting
<ar>
eyJhb: well, a lot of the speculative execution bugs did hit harder on intel. and i haven't seen anything substantial regarding the DoA cpus, only rumors
<eyJhb>
lovesegfault: Waiting until we have quantum laptops
<lovesegfault>
lol
<eyJhb>
ar: Hit harder in what regard?
<eyJhb>
Wasn't that just because Intel have a larger market share?
<eyJhb>
What laptop are you on lovesegfault ?! :o
noneucat has quit [Quit: Idle for 30+ days]

It's surprisingly comfortable to set up an ubuntu on a separate dataset and systemctl switch-root into it to just boot an ubuntu and get a graphical environment in it
<sphalerite>
(did this to play skyrim, which didn't work in proton/steam on nixos for some reason)
<Ke>
you need all the drivers in initrd, I guess
__monty__ has joined #nixos-chat
<sphalerite>
no since they're already loaded by nixos :)
<sphalerite>
just reusing the running kernel with a new rootfs
<sphalerite>
it's like using nixos as an initramfs for ubuntu :p
<pie_>
sphalerite: h...uh
<pie_>
that sounds kinda interesting
<pie_>
could you do tht with a contianer somehow to not need to "boot out of" nixos?
<sphalerite>
yeah, but I specifically didn't want to use namespacing stuff to have something that's as close to a normal ubuntu as comfortably achievable
<pie_>
*nod*
<sphalerite>
since steam's packaging is based on that and, well, skyrim doesn't run in it :p
<pie_>
im just not familiar with switch root and wouldnt really have thought of doing this
<Ke>
sphalerite: so you boot to nixos rootfs and then only switch_root?
<pie_>
i probably should learn more about this and kexec and suc
<pie_>
such
<Ke>
I thought you switched from initrd
<sphalerite>
Ke: yeah, I'm using my nixos normally and then I decide I'm done with work for today and "reboot" (only the userspace) into ubuntu by running `systemctl switch-root /ubuntu /sbin/init`. Then systemctl shuts down like if it were doing a reboot or power-down, but instead of rebooting or powering off it does a switch_root into /ubuntu and execs the /sbin/init there
<sphalerite>
err, the second "systemctl" there should be "systemd"
<__monty__>
That's pretty cool. Sounds way better than dual-booting.
<Ke>
well you only save a couple of seconds though
<sphalerite>
but I don't have to set up zfs on ubuntu, nor change the partitioning :)
<Ke>
I guess yes
<Ke>
or crypto or bootloader
<sphalerite>
exactly
<__monty__>
Just less state to set up/get rid of. State bad, Not State good : )
<pie_>
another upside is you cant to any work without rebooting :Ö
<pie_>
* any more work :)
<pie_>
or at least switchin back into nixos, idk :P
<sphalerite>
hehe
<Ke>
at least I finally have reboot where I don't need manual intervention apart from crypto

Kinda scary when the IPMI interface doesn't show up
<eyJhb>
And the one where IPMI does show up, the OS doesn't come live. Which is... Better?
<eyJhb>
For some reason, the power button did not work on the server that didn't come up. Easy fix :D
<gchristensen>
it'd be cool if nixos boot entries could have notes attached, added after the fact
<gchristensen>
like "this one broke everything!" or "known good" or automatically generated ones like "Used for 127 hours"
<eyJhb>
gchristensen: That would be waaay too awesome. Just the, used for would be cool. But kinda hard to do.
<gchristensen>
yeah maybe so
<eyJhb>
Also, both servers somewhat threw their IPMI configuration. My router suddenly started to expose IPMI on my WAN interface.
