rfcs#64 (by Infinisil, 22 weeks ago, closed): [RFC 0064] New Documentation Format for nixpkgs and NixOS
<ldlework>
I just ran some regex over a copy paste off the website to format it into org-mode
<ldlework>
lol
<ldlework>
Doesn't look like org-mode is much of a contender on that issue
<ldlework>
Even though it is clearly the superlative markup :P
<gchristensen>
docbook is the one true format
<ldlework>
i can't do any of the things i can do with docbook with org-mode :(
<gchristensen>
with enough lisp you can do anything you want!
<ldlework>
err
<ldlework>
I meant the opposite of what I said
<ldlework>
lol
<gchristensen>
(where the lisp here is in two places. emacs lisp, and XSLT lisp)
<ldlework>
With docbook, I have to first compile to see the result
<ldlework>
with org-mode the files themselves are the result
<gchristensen>
you're just not using enough lisp
<ldlework>
hehe
<ldlework>
Man I can imagine high-quality org-mode docs for nix
<ldlework>
It would be so good, at least for emacs users :P
<ldlework>
Be able to just run any example in the docs by hitting C-c C-c
<ldlework>
Be able to aggregate and define my own views into the document
<ldlework>
By able to directly link into those documents from my own note documents
<ldlework>
Somewhere in the multiverse
<energizer>
glad to see the outcome of that rfc
<ldlework>
closed because no expected progress?
<energizer>
basically arrived at a decision of ReST
<ldlework>
oh ok
<energizer>
to be formalized in another rfc
<ldlework>
you like rst?
<energizer>
i think it's the best choice for the nix community
<ldlework>
i can never get used to it, i always have to keep the docs open
<energizer>
rst syntax isn't ideal, and the docutils codebase is old, incompletely documented, and maintained on sourceforge
<energizer>
but i consider sphinx (python) and asciidoc (ruby) the best competitors in this race and nix's community has more pythonistas than rubypeople
* joepie91
still feels that MDX would be a good choice
<joepie91>
really have to get around to rolling a proof of concept

<abathur>
pollen might be great
<abathur>
but someone would have to descend from the mountaintop with tablets
<abathur>
also, if you can see the result without building the format probably isn't good enough
<abathur>
:(
<joepie91>
abathur: ?
<abathur>
"With docbook, I have to first compile to see the result" "with org-mode the files themselves are the result"

<energizer>
probably easier to just wait until the sphinx version is published and it'll be easy to incorporate into one of those systems like dash-docs
