the only somewhat consistent failure seems to be the btrfsSubvols test atm but I don’t know why that is failing

Hey, regarding 45470, I'm not afraid of merging this myself, am pretty confident that I didn't make any mistakes, have tested it, it's backwards compatible and a good change in general

It is a decently big change though, I wouldn't mind some other eyes on it (the second commit is the meaty one), I did some final adjustments today
