<infinisil> Hehe, I found my old iPhone 5, using this now :D
<infinisil> I'll totally blame the 6 Plus' size for it breaking so fast, I dropped that thing constantly
<infinisil> My old iPhone is the perfect temporary solution until the Librem 5 ships

<averell> sounds like before 19.09 even
<averell> no, 10k was end of may, nvm.
<drakonis> we're going to get there by the end of the year
<drakonis> at best
<ashkitten> me: hey tinc can you use this machine's globally routable ipv6 address to establish direct connections from outside the network
<ashkitten> tinc: fuck you ill use the router's ipv6 address instead for no apparent reason
<ashkitten> i guess im port forwarding now
<ashkitten> port forwarding for ipv6

<ashkitten> wait, this isn't even my router's address
<ashkitten> i have no idea
<ashkitten> but port forwarding helped sooooo what
<ashkitten> and now it's not working
<ashkitten> but only for my laptop
<ashkitten> i give up
<ashkitten> eventually i'll get a router that's not comcast and it'll probably just work tbh

<sphalerite> qyliss: oh neat! And what about it is GPL3?
<sphalerite> um
<sphalerite> is hetzner down
<sphalerite> no…
<sphalerite> why can I ping my server but nothing else :|
<sphalerite> huh. It stopped responding when it started scrubbing.
<sphalerite> huh… SMART reports Power_On_Hours_and_Msec 949299h+57m+27.080s for the SSD in there…
<sphalerite> which is over 100 years
<sphalerite> ah well
<sphalerite> Anybody got a favourite domain registrar that they'd recommend? I'm considering switching from namecheap
<Ralith> what's put you off about namecheap?

<qyliss> sphalerite: nothing. That’s my phone number.
<sphalerite> qyliss: oooooooh
<sphalerite> lol
<srhb> sphalerite: How's your Danish? :-P
<srhb> gratisdns is pretty great
<joepie91> sphalerite: I usually use internetbs.net
<joepie91> pretty much no complaints about it, everything Just Works, in the odd case that I've needed support (eg. unclear constraints on a TLD) they've always been very responsive, and when they started offering a hosting add-on they included a "never show me upsell options again" toggle which I can appreciate :P
<joepie91> (namecheap, OTOH, almost let a domain of mine lapse despite having paid for it, due to some sort of internal problem with their renewal system - all I got from support was "it's fixed now" and asking *what* went wrong in the first place was like drawing blood from a stone)
<joepie91> though at least that seems to just be a case of bad outsourced support, so namecheap isn't /horrible/, I just don't feel that I can trust them to not fuck things up
<joepie91> my award for "worst registrar ever" has to be Dynadot, which insta-suspended a domain over a frivolous abuse report without prior notice (== downtime), and staunchly refused to unsuspend it or even let me transfer it out to another registrar(!) until a journalist called them up to inquire about the suspension, and then suddenly it was possible to transfer it out
<sphalerite> Ralith: nothing in particular put me off, just wondering if there are better options out there
<sphalerite> joepie91: wow
<sphalerite> srhb: I know enough Swedish that I may sort of be able to wiggle my way through using it
<joepie91> yeah, "wow" is right :P Dynadot is the one registrar that I basically loudly warn people to stay away from
<joepie91> bright side is that at least that little joke cost them a big customer
<joepie91> (user of my site who was very unamused)
<sphalerite> joepie91: do you happen to also know how I can find out how much it'll cost to renew the domains if I transfer them to internet.bs?
<joepie91> sphalerite: unless something's marked as "SALE" there's generally little difference between registration and renewal cost
<joepie91> they don't do the "$1 first year and $465872948 every year after that" nonsense
<joepie91> (and even the sales are subsidized by the TLD registry I believe)
<sphalerite> oh, that's pretty expensive :/
<sphalerite> well, more expensive than I expected
<joepie91> internetbs' main customers are bulk domain buyers, so there's very little of the bullshit that you see with consumer-oriented registrars
<joepie91> sphalerite: I'm not sure what TLD you're looking at, but *generally speaking* internetbs' margins are quite low
<sphalerite> .tech
<joepie91> ah, the new TLDs are a special case, there's a lot of variance between registrars with those -- afaik it has something to do with registries now being allowed to charge different prices to different registrars
<joepie91> so there's no single "registry fee" anymore for those
<sphalerite> that's stupid
<joepie91> yeah, it is, I'm really not happy at all how ICANN has handled the new TLDs
<joepie91> it was so obviously a cash grab
<joepie91> "we don't care what you do with your new TLD, so long as you give us money"
<sphalerite> yeah, so disappointed about .man as well
<sphalerite> (belongs to MAN Group and they're not planning to sell anything from it)
<joepie91> sphalerite: https://www.domcomp.com/ -- make sure to select 'Renewal'
<joepie91> :/
<sphalerite> I wanted to get hacker.man
<joepie91> hah
<sphalerite> since my real name is Linus Heckemann, which is kind of like linux hackerman
<sphalerite> linux.hacker.man
<joepie91> yeah, that would be a great domain pun :D
<sphalerite> but no. MAN Group says no.

<colemickens> git is so damn annoying sometimes. `git am 58471.patch`, it fails on one of the commits and doesn't even partially apply it. seems like it acts completely differently than if this had been a commit I were rebasing, where it would've at least added the new file, and then modified the conflicting files. instead, it appears to have done nothing and just left me with a command I can run to show the current failed commit than I
<colemickens> now have to apply completely manually.
<colemickens> Or maybe I'm doing something wrong?
<ivan> colemickens: git am -3

<ashkitten> i wonder how many stray result links there are in my home directory
<infinisil> ashkitten: I've been thinking about making a NixOS module that enforces declarativity
<ashkitten> oh?
<infinisil> So it would e.g. make /home read-only, remove nix-env
<ashkitten> interesting
<infinisil> And provide some options for configuring popular applications that usually require a GUI to configure
<ashkitten> i'd be interested, but there are a bunch of things that depend on writing to /home
<ashkitten> steam, for one thing
<ashkitten> firefox
<infinisil> Oh and I guess some options to allow packages to get around this
<infinisil> But whitelisting them
<ashkitten> what if we did it so that each application that needs mutability gets its own private home directory
<infinisil> Yeah that would be neat
<ashkitten> so you have like, /home/ash/.data/firefox and firefox runs in a chroot with that directory set as $HOME
<infinisil> Yeah, with bubblewrap maybe
<ashkitten> if you end up making progress on this i'm definitely interested
<ashkitten> i've been pretty annoyed about not being able to manage my home directory like everything else for a good while
<ashkitten> and lots of stuff clutters it
<infinisil> More of a project for the distant future if anything
<ashkitten> yeah
<ashkitten> make sure to let me know ;p
<infinisil> This also sounds a lot like what qyliss is working on actually
<infinisil> I wish I remembered the name of it, but it's an OS combining NixOS and Qubes
<ashkitten> ah yeah
<samueldr> ashkitten: `nix-store --gc --print-roots | grep -v '^{'`could help
<ashkitten> thanks samueldr
<samueldr> (the grep is to remove the memory roots)
<ashkitten> i forgot these result links are gc roots
<samueldr> those that aren't I figure a `find` for broken symlinks would find most
<samueldr> but at the same time, they're not rooted, so likely insignificant :)
<ashkitten> heh
<ashkitten> i've definitely accidentally committed a result link in a git repo once or twice
<infinisil> ashkitten: Ah it's called Spectrum: https://spectrum-os.org/
<ashkitten> oh yeat
<ashkitten> i've seen that
