<joepie91> aaaaaaargh aliexpress!
<joepie91> why do you always suggest me cheaper places to buy shit when I've already added the thing to my cart!
<joepie91> who designs this stuff...

<andi-> isn't it great? They try really hard to give you the cheapest offer! :)
<andi-> Western world would always try to trick you into adding more "value" (insurance, express delivery, ...)
<joepie91> andi-: but why can't they do that *before* I click 'add to cart' :|
<andi-> hrhr
<andi-> probably for historic reasons
<samueldr> one could argue they allow it, in the search :)
<andi-> their backend only supports post-order hooks or something
<joepie91> samueldr: they... don't, though
<joepie91> the search is absolute junk and has no 'show me similar items' option
<joepie91> the lists at the bottom of the page also don't match by similarity
<joepie91> it's *just* the "you might also be interested in this" popup after adding to cart that consistently shows cheaper options for the same product
<samueldr> yeah, it was mostly said in jest
<samueldr> their system is weird
<samueldr> looks a bit like how ebay's does, full of disjointed parts put together
<gchristensen> I've thought about buying cheap servers there, but am afraid of what might be lurking inside
<samueldr> thing is, probably not much more than bought "here" but with the same components, though it's hard to validate
<samueldr> s/not much/nothing/
<joepie91> gchristensen: general rule of thumb, you will receive whatever is in the listing, and your warranty extends to your doorstep
<samueldr> that's the more pragmatic worries
<joepie91> that is, if it's DOA then you'll probably get a refund or replacement without trouble
<joepie91> but don't expect an X year warranty
<joepie91> also: the more details in the listing, the more likely the product is any good
<joepie91> because anything in the listing is something the seller needs to conform to
<joepie91> listings devoid of information tend to get you mystery meat :P
<andi-> the experience I have with them is actually pretty positive.. besides a few obviously fake nodeMcus where 1/5 failed on me there is nothing negative.. Even those 100m LED strips I bought there for a few hundred bucks from random dealers work fine
<joepie91> oh yeah, overall my experience with aliexpress is fine too
<joepie91> you just need to know what to expect
<andi-> yep
<andi-> it is not amazon in cheaper
<samueldr> fine here too, biggest issue was an "obvious" fraudulent item, which I bought anyway because of the protection
<andi-> well to some degree but different
<joepie91> also, my buying strategy nowadays is "buy the thing that's one price tier above the cheapest"
<joepie91> gets you the good deal, rather than the bottom-of-the-barrel with cut corners
<samueldr> (dual dvi cables, but at a price point much lower than every other dual dvi cables)
<samueldr> (they were not dual dvi, single link dvi)
<joepie91> said buying strategy resulted in eg. a very good backpack for 35 EUR :P
<samueldr> which brand? got me a tigernu on aliexpress 2 years ago, much better than what's in store around me
<samueldr> (for the equivalent and even 2× price tier)
<joepie91> apparently it's even cheaper now
<samueldr> neat, though don't expect it to ever not be discounted, except on days close to special deal days
<joepie91> rather a lot of space, good padding (exception: no padding on the bottom), good back sweat prevention, etc.
<joepie91> comfortable
<joepie91> oh, sure :P
<joepie91> I don't even look at the 'regular' price
<samueldr> :)
<joepie91> but yeah, quite happy with this backpack so far
<joepie91> I carry around half a hackerspace in it...
<andi-> mhm, since last NixCon I need a new backpack... that one looks good enough and for that price...
<joepie91> samueldr: my original reason for getting a backpack from China was groceries
<joepie91> I do my groceries on foot, and they can get quite havy
<joepie91> heavy*
<joepie91> so I needed a spacious backpack that can handle a ton of weight :P
<samueldr> mine was frustration with "known good brands getting cheap" here
<joepie91> all my previous ones failed after a few months...
<samueldr> e.g. a name brand that 5 years prior would have been quality items
<joepie91> this one hasn't, yet
<joepie91> oh yeah, you see that with a lot of brands for everything
<samueldr> name brand being sold off or licensed to bottom barell scraping
<samueldr> way too often I'm done with brands :)
<joepie91> samueldr: my local supermarket serves as an alert for licensing to me :P
<samueldr> my backpack was for my laptop and work
<joepie91> whenever some random brand starts licensing out their name, that supermarket is usually the first to stock the resulting crap
<samueldr> the side pockets are amazing
<joepie91> so when I see a known brand show up there... yep, they're licensing now
<samueldr> they have an elastic fabric band to slide bottles in, both sides
<samueldr> so you're not forced to use a cheap net to put bottles in, which invariably falls out
<joepie91> ah yeah, that's one criticism about my current backpack, the side pockets are not large enough to hold large bottles reliably
<joepie91> fwiw, I *have* had a backpack with a net that didn't have this problem, so it's possible
<samueldr> I'm a walker / bicyclist for work / groceries
<joepie91> samueldr: the one you linked seems good too, but it doesn't seem to have any ventilation on the back :/
<joepie91> other than the foam/net stuff which doesn't work too well
<samueldr> the foam is sturdy and the channels are big enough
<samueldr> maybe not as many channels as yours though
<samueldr> I was pleasantly surprised
<joepie91> samueldr: problem is that I get *extremely* sweaty so I really need unusually good ventilation
<joepie91> better than most backpacks can provide
<samueldr> now you're being difficult ;)
<joepie91> the tough-material 'grid' on that yeso backpack seems to do the trick, but I've seen few backpacks with such a structure
<joepie91> samueldr: I'm always difficult :)
<samueldr> oh, and the bag is stiff, but in a good way, even after 2 years, empty it keeps its shape
<samueldr> so it's easy to slide things in and out
<samueldr> the previous branded-bag was a floppy mess months after acquiring it (without mentioning the holes in the bottom of the laptop compartment
<andi-> how many different backpacks do you need?
<joepie91> andi-: one that functions and does not have holes
<joepie91> lol
<samueldr> two
<samueldr> one I keep empty for groceries, the other has all my work things in
<joepie91> yeah, I've been contemplating that too actually, now that I regularly visit $hackerspace
<gchristensen> thule used to make this great backpack, it is what I use now. bright orange.
<samueldr> though the groceries one is usually the previous main one
<samueldr> ah, I'm difficult, no colours!
<joepie91> currently I hack around this by taking a large cotton bag from Lidl if I need to do groceries in a hurry and can't be bothered to unpack
<joepie91> next best thing
<joepie91> they're less convenient than a backpack but holy crap they are strong
<joepie91> I've loaded them full of bottles of soda in the past with absolutely no trouble
<andi-> I hat a Deuter Backpack for many years until I lost it at my train ride to NixCon.. Now I only have a messenger Bag that fits a 15" + 13" thinkpad or some other foo.. not sure what kind of bagpack I'd really need otherwise.. I have been wishing for regular backpack whenever I went to buy groceries but since that is mostly when I return from the office...
<samueldr> andi-: maybe a foldable backpack
<andi-> joepie91: thats actually what I do as well.. Have an cotton bag in my other bag that I just pull out
<joepie91> yep
<joepie91> several, if I'm going to a conference
<joepie91> people are always in need of bags, it turns out :P
<joepie91> bags, batteries, USB cables, and socks; the four things people always need...
<samueldr> something like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-LightWeight-Foldable-Travel-Backpack-Bag-Outdoor-Sport-Folding-Hiking-Camping-Storage-Bag-Waterproof-Shoulder/32823069647.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.169.531877e9rwvPmr&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10152_10151_10065_10344_10130_10068_10547_10342_10343_10340_10548_10341_10696_10084_10083_10618_10139_10307_10059_306_100031_10103_10624_10623_10622_10621_10620,

<andi-> maybe I am already at my optimal solution.. It just doesn't feel right. Does it ever?
<gchristensen> my backpack feels right:)
<joepie91> samueldr: my experience with foldable backpacks is that the ergonomics are awful
<gchristensen> (all the X's)
<samueldr> :)
<joepie91> does not combine well with shoulder strain from repeated computer use
<samueldr> joepie91: looking at it this way: better than carrying it by hand if you have nothing else?
<joepie91> not necessarily
<joepie91> changing bags between hands compensates reasonably well for strain
<joepie91> due to change of posture
<samueldr> well, in my case it is, can't carry stuff for long when my digits are in use
<andi-> gchristensen: travis days? :)
<gchristensen> yup
<joepie91> hm, getting tired
<joepie91> maybe I should sleep early tonight
<samueldr> it's the moment, stop everything and go to sleep :)
<gchristensen> midnight hree ... night :)
<samueldr> unless it's way too early
<joepie91> samueldr: it's the moment indeed :P
<joepie91> night!
<samueldr> night to you all
<andi-> me two... been wandering around Amsterdam all day.. my feet are tired.. my arms are tired from all the kiteing the last days.. Vacation is tiresome somehow -.-
<samueldr> (I'm not going away)
