Since we already had a discussion on keyboard layouts: any of you using ergonomic keyboards? I ordered an kinesis advantage yesterday to counter some of the pain in my hands ..
<manveru>
i used TrulyErgonomic for a while, but it broke after only a year :( so i'm back to my HHKB which is ergonomic enough for me

<gchristensen>
andi-: yes
<gchristensen>
andi-: I've used the microsoft naturals, truly eregonomic, ergodox, kinesis freestyle, a custom thing, and a kinesis advantage
<capisce>
I've been happy with the typematrix 2030
<gchristensen>
oh that would end me
<capisce>
for me, the microsoft naturals seemed to require a lot more typing effort
<capisce>
and likewise for the kinesis advantage
<gchristensen>
sure
<capisce>
switching to the colemak keyboard layout also helped ease typing effort for me
<gchristensen>
but typing isn't the hardest part of my job, and a bit more effort there isn't going to end me.
<gchristensen>
andi-: I've also considered getting a maltron left handed keyboard so I can work and get surgery... but that feels pretty scary
adamt has joined #nixos-chat
<andi->
One handed indeed look scary but imagine if you master that :)
<andi->
On handed 300+ wpm
<andi->
Keys per minute or whatever the metric was.
<andi->
gchristensen: which one are you liking the most?
<gchristensen>
andi-: I credit my "still having a career" to the Kinesis Advantage
<andi->
Wow
<andi->
That's a tough statement :)
<gchristensen>
a couple days typing on a regular keyboard leaves me in severe pain for about a week now. it didn't used to be this way, but my RSI has progressed over the past 10yrs
<andi->
I am just having a bit if pain so I decided to switch things around
<gchristensen>
good choice
<gchristensen>
your hands are your money-makers
<andi->
Yep
<infinisil>
:( I've been in pain for a while
<infinisil>
It's not as bad right now, but still there
<gchristensen>
I have three Kinesis Advantages. it used to be one for home, and one for two offices I worked out of. now it is an upstairs keyboard, a downstairs keyboard, and a travel keyboard
<gchristensen>
^ also, fwiw, what works for me may not work for you
<andi->
I am liking my trackball for now
<gchristensen>
don't get the bluetooth Evoluent if you choose to try it, their bluetooth is bad :)
<adamt>
gchristensen: What trackball did you try? i have the logitech cordless optical trackman, which i love, but it's out of production. :'(
<MichaelRaskin>
By the way, am I correct that there is currently no dictation-based open-source input system I can package without ragequitting?
<gchristensen>
kensington slimblade, adamt
<gchristensen>
MichaelRaskin: I don't think there are any
<MichaelRaskin>
Sphinx seems to be better suited for one-of-twenty voice-based choices than for continuous dictation.
<adamt>
ugh. "Ambidextrous design ideal for both right-handed and left-handed users", way to make a compromise sound like the optimal design decision...
<gchristensen>
Nuance (Dragon) is good at pushing competitors out and suing them in to oblivion
<joepie91>
gchristensen: fellow rollermouse user!
<gchristensen>
!!! I've never met another!
<joepie91>
:)
<joepie91>
Free3 for me though
<joepie91>
due to the Red's lack of navigation buttons
<joepie91>
started using it a few weeks ago, and I don't think I'll ever go back to a regular mouse, haha
<joepie91>
definitely worth the $wayTooMuch I paid for it
<adamt>
How do you move the mouse sideways with the red? Seems to only be up/down
<gchristensen>
watch a video :) it is cool
<joepie91>
adamt: it's basically a rollerbar that you can either slide across its 'track' or roll
<joepie91>
at least, I presume the Red works the same way
<gchristensen>
accessibility tech is expensive, but worth every penny when you consider the value they provide. anyway, my hands are in quite a lot of pain actually this morning, so I'm going to be off.
<joepie91>
gchristensen: I was quite amused to find out that the Free3 uses a bog standard laser mouse sensor in its casing, lol
<joepie91>
from the sensor's POV you're rolling the 'mousemat' around the mouse
<adamt>
Oh, of course, silly me. Looks neat.
<gchristensen>
:D
<gchristensen>
adamt: when you hit the far left / right ends, the mouse continues "forever" so you never run out of room
<joepie91>
much more reliable than some sort of mechanical system though, so I'm quite happy with that
<joepie91>
gchristensen: does it have clicky side switches on the Red as well? or is it silent there?
<gchristensen>
silent
<joepie91>
ah, that's different from the Free3 then
<joepie91>
I have tactile switches at the ends
<gchristensen>
anyway, my hands are in quite a lot of pain actually this morning, so I'm going to be off. :) I'd love to talk more later
<joepie91>
then again, I also have a tactile switch for clicking, that's also optical on the Red I believe
<joepie91>
yeah, np :)
<adamt>
gchristensen: Can you control the speed of the cursor when reaching the end of the bar?
<adamt>
Oh sorry. Cya.
<joepie91>
adamt: fwiw, all of the recent rollermouse models have a standard USB HID mode and a custom driver mode, as far as I know
<joepie91>
presumably you can configure more stuff with the custom (Windows) driver
<joepie91>
I don't know if end-of-bar speed is one of those things though
<adamt>
Yeah i'm not interested in what can be done on windows. :p
<joepie91>
well, the problem is that custom parameters like this are generally not customizable on Linux, with any device :P
<joepie91>
rollermouse definitely doesn't have custom Linux drivers
<joepie91>
not vendor-supplied anyway
<adamt>
But it looks awesome, I'm just worried about getting annoyed at the speed "at the ends" of the bar
<joepie91>
adamt: I've not found it an issue, personally
balsoft has joined #nixos-chat
<joepie91>
so my DPI on the Free3 is such that it can span about 2 of my 3 screens
<adamt>
one should just hack it so that all the way left = left side of the screen, and same for right side. :p
<joepie91>
I'm usually only using 2 out of 3 screens at a time anyway
<joepie91>
so the side-switches for me are more of a "switch to this other set of screens" kind of thing
<adamt>
aha
<joepie91>
because the side switches just keep moving the cursor, they act as a sort of very fast 'reset to edge of screen'
<adamt>
Still, I'm too young to be seen using a device like that. People will just call me old. :-)
<joepie91>
(end-of-bar speed is very high on the Free3)
<joepie91>
adamt: also, you can configure the DPI for the bar to span all of your screens, but then the speed is too high :)
<joepie91>
for 3 monitors anyway
<joepie91>
and eh, I'm 26 :P
<adamt>
joepie91: Have you tried using focus-follows-mouse when using the rollermouse?
<joepie91>
nah, focus-follows-mouse annoys the hell out of me
<adamt>
Mkay. I just kinda figured it could be less annoying with a rollermouse
<joepie91>
my mouse position rarely matches where I want my keyboard input to go :P
<joepie91>
regardless of input device type
<joepie91>
blah
<joepie91>
was getting ready to get some work done
<joepie91>
then my downstairs neighbour decided to start doing construction work
<joepie91>
aaaaand focus is gone
<sphalerite>
on the topic of window focus — I'd really love to have eye tracking for that
<andi->
I am just trying to get rid of the mouse at all costs.. I accompilished that pretty good so far
<MichaelRaskin>
keynav
<MichaelRaskin>
But that is more of a last-ditch kill-the-remainder solution, you want to do better most of the time, of course
<sphalerite>
I set up a PS4 controller for browsing at one point, that was an... interesting experience?
<sphalerite>
It wasn't very refined, I didn't have a way to jump between links so it wasn't super practical
<sphalerite>
but I could always fall back to its multitouch trackpad when necessary

MichaelRaskin: I think we are talking of different mouse use cases. The only one for me that still exists is the browser and vimium does a very good job there
<andi->
And games ofc..
<MichaelRaskin>
Well, some UI designers do manage to achieve click-only control, be it in JavaScript or in an application
balsoft has quit [Quit: balsoft]

I really managed to not have anything outside of the terminal besides the browser.. Feels really good.
<MichaelRaskin>
Most of browsing, even JS one, can be delegated to an offscreen browser instance, the fed to terminal after scraping…

Uff... registered in the discourse and I feel a bit lost on the interface... It's all so large
<andi->
well back to using it as a mailinglist... :/
<adamt>
What is this with discourse and a mailing list?
<MichaelRaskin>
At least it has online archives readable without JS.
<infinisil>
I should set up the mail gateway thing for discourse
<infinisil>
Otherwise I wouldn't see any post
<andi->
infinisil: it really is just a few check boxes
<infinisil>
My laziness known no bounds
<andi->
:D
<infinisil>
Um, got a link to it?
<infinisil>
Eh whatever, I'll do it later
<infinisil>
My internet is so broken right now
<andi->
I decided changing some local settings in my user env and ended up updating it after a few weeks again (on this machine)… That "freed" up some time to do the discoure singup.

gchristensen: similar boat with the Kinesis Advantage (saved my career). I've got one for home and work. also a "Handshoe" mouse (https://www.amazon.com/Hippus-Wireless-Light-HandShoe-Medium/dp/B006TZNBL0) - but after 5 years of ergonomic devices, I can type on regular keyboards a bit longer than you
