<jcrben> saeedgnu: just noticed that the nixpkgs manual has no php explanation - seems like there's some discussion at https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/24432
<jcrben> not a fan of php, but I use it at work a bit - there are a lot of interesting open-source apps written in php, for better or worse...

<infinisil> Oh my god, what is this
<infinisil> My ISP is doing weird stuff
<MichaelRaskin> I think there was also a netsplit
<infinisil> I certainly have unrelated internet problem though
<infinisil> My ISP is seemingly flipping every 10th bit or so
<MichaelRaskin> That's inventive
<infinisil> I can `dig @192.168.1.1 google.com` and it gets it right occasionally
<infinisil> But mostly there's garbage
<infinisil> "Got bad packet: bad compression pointer"
<infinisil> "Got bad packet: bad label type"
<infinisil> "Got bad packet: FORMERR"
<MichaelRaskin> Wait, but TCP/IP stack lets these packets through
<infinisil> This is so weird
<gchristensen> what backwards world is this that my upload is better than my download https://screenshotscdn.firefoxusercontent.com/images/8e98894a-73d8-4989-b0e4-e60e4ec188e7.png
<gchristensen> dig is dns is udp
<MichaelRaskin> Ah right. At least by default.
<infinisil> But like, I've never seen so many bad packets consistently
<MichaelRaskin> (Because TCP DNS does work, and I don't mean TLS DNS)
<MichaelRaskin> But UDP still has checksums, no?
<infinisil> This is from a bunch of dig @192.168.1.1 google.com's
<gchristensen> MichaelRaskin: evidently yes, since it is catching the bad packets
<gchristensen> infinisil: good luck convincing your ISP of it
<gchristensen> infinisil: I've spent the past ~1yr diagnosing an issue with iPXE on specific Aarch64 hardware flipping a bit 326M in
<infinisil> Lol, what was the problem?
<gchristensen> still don't know
<infinisil> The same bit everytime?
<gchristensen> almost all the time?
* sphalerite recalls some SwiftOnSecurity tweet about network cables
<infinisil> gchristensen: Wild guess: Somebody in the line using a rather long escape sequence in the hopes of not having to escape the escapes
<sphalerite> where only very specific sequences of bits would cause issues. Ethernet cables are quite fickle apparently.
<infinisil> gchristensen: But your data contains the escape sequence
<gchristensen> I'd hope not :)
<gchristensen> I'm more thinking it is likely a bug in the firmware or hardware
<infinisil> And for some reason my setting of using 1.1.1.1 as a DNS server doesn't work
<gchristensen> or in how iPXE calculates TCP packet checksums on aarch64, for which it has special code
<infinisil> Sure sounds like fun :)
<gchristensen> you know how hard it is to get someone to believe you've found a bug in their HW? :P
<gchristensen> they have a minimum of eight digits of reasons to not believe you
<infinisil> I can imagine
