I am trying to get rid of llvm, that should help a bunch
<gchristensen>
:o
<LnL>
currently rust includes a vendored llvm build

We investigated the mysteries of RPi 3 power use with my dad. He hooked my RPi to a DC voltage transformer, which enabled us to exactly control the voltage and max. amperage. With 5.1V, the switching to u-boot text issue appeared after 10 mins. With 5.2V it didn't.
<buovjaga>
The weird thing is, we measured the Element14 power supply I use to put out 5.29V!
<buovjaga>
With 4.9V the yellow lightning started appearing immediately upon boot and the switching back to u-boot text happened very quickly.
<Dezgeg>
maybe we just put avoid_warnings=1 in config.txt to disable the lightning bolts
<buovjaga>
yep the behaviour makes zero sense :(
<buovjaga>
With the transformed we could see it was not pulling anywhere near the max amps. It hovered around 0.33-0.41 amps
<buovjaga>
even when building I think
<samueldr>
might be pertinent to check with a raspberry-pi foundation kernel and not using vc4 KMS?
<samueldr>
and/or
<buovjaga>
thanks, I will note that down
<Dezgeg>
apparently it's even documented in the mainline driver: This driver requires that "avoid_warnings=2" be present in the config.txt for the firmware, to keep it from smashing our display setup.
<buovjaga>
aah wow
<disasm>
buovjaga: did you measure the power supply under load? Sometimes batteries/crappy power supplies can get voltage drops when load is applied, even though in theory a VS should provide constant voltage.
<buovjaga>
disasm: nope, we did not measure the Element14s under load. Thanks for the tip. I am annoyed if they are indeed crappy, what with them having Raspberry Pi written all over them etc.
<disasm>
I haven't used that specific one in the past, so can't really say
<buovjaga>
yeah they sell them alongside the Raspis at an electronics store here in Helsinki
<disasm>
oh, the other thing is the cable if it's a separate usb cable
<buovjaga>
it's actually not separable
<disasm>
a high resistance cable can drop the voltage
<disasm>
ah k, not that then :)
<buovjaga>
part of my plan is to push NixOS to my dad for his build projects :) He is a wizard as he built particle detectors his whole life
<disasm>
buovjaga: nice :) Yeah, I haven't had time to play much since Christmas. I have an rpi car and a sensor kit, but currently using raspbian, but I have a micro-sd with nixos that boots, I just don't have any gpio stuff hooked up to the nix one yet.
<disasm>
I want to package the sunfounder python apps for nixos so I can just write nixops code to deploy changes (and not have to ssh in and manually start the application) :)
<buovjaga>
ah self-driving raspis! :D

yeah, I'm going to get the camera mounted hopefully when I get back home and see if I can teach my 2 year old son how to control it from an android app :)
