clever: one of your nixos-configs suggests that you like factorio, is that right?
<clever>
nh2: yep
<nh2>
clever: we should play some time
<clever>
i tend to add a number of mods to my games, logistic train networks, sometimes early nanobots
<clever>
though ive never done a seablock map before

I'm not surprised to find multiple factorians here. I've got an AAI playthrough going at this moment, but haven't started wiring up the vehicles.

I would get started with Factorio, but I found it really hard to learn how all the various doodads and things work.
<iqubic>
I also found it really hard to understand how to generate power at all, or how to get electricity to my machines.
<iqubic>
I have played like a total of 1 hour though.

<joepie91>
iqubic: latest version?
<joepie91>
if yes, tl;dr of power generation: steam engine needs steam, boiler needs water and fuel (eg. coal) and produces steam (connect them 1:1), offshore pump provides water when placed in a body of water
<joepie91>
so you get lake -> offshore pump -> some pipes probably -> (row of) boilers -> steam engine(s) -> power lines
<joepie91>
with some sort of feed of coal/fuel leading towards that row, for automagical refueling; which you can do with burner inserters, which refuel themselves and don't stop working if power goes down
<joepie91>
small electric poles are available from the start, longer-distance ones after some research; place a line/network of electric poles from your steam engines to your machines (hold and drag/walk to automatically place poles at maximum distance from each other), make sure machines fall within the blue 'area of effect' of the poles, et voila, power
<joepie91>
also strongly recommend hitting ALT to enable the 'alt view', which tells you what kinds of items containers contain using icons, and more importantly, what direction fluids go in from/to devices etc.

My only problem with Factorio is the same as with modded MInecraft: Once I've gotten pretty far once or twice, it's hard to find a reason to do it again. I don't feel like I'm doing anything interesting the second time around.
<infinisil>
elvishjerricco: I love minecraft because there's so many things you could do
<infinisil>
I particularly like the redstone side of it, developing minecart systems with it
<elvishjerricco>
Yea. I just got bored when I realized it wasn't leading to anything :P
<infinisil>
The only limit is your imagination though!
<fpletz>
infinisil: have you tried minetest with the technic mod? :)
<infinisil>
Not sure, but I have recently played a modpack with 280 mods in it, so the chances are it's in there lol
<infinisil>
Oh, that's not minecraft
<infinisil>
I have definitely not played minetest
<infinisil>
fpletz: What's special about it?
<fpletz>
infinisil: minetest is a free minecraft reimplementation and all mods are written in lua and easily customizable, with the technic mod you can build so many different kind of machines to automate _everything_ :)
<infinisil>
Hmm yeah, that's similar to just modded normal minecraft, you can also automate pretty much everything with a couple techniques
<infinisil>
But having played modded minecraft for a bit, I miss vanilla minecraft, because I'm spending more time automating all of the mods new stuff rather than actually building anything..

PSA: Don't get a wattmeter for your home if you're even a little bit obsessive about power usage.
