colemickens: am I correct in my impression that wlroots on rpi3 is currently a no-go? Seems like wlroots vulcan, with the rpvk driver might enable it eventually
<edrex>
sway runs for me, but crashes with a random error message very shortly

<edrex>
colemickens: not sure why I thought you might know :)
<edrex>
reading about turnip VULKAN driver for qualcomm GPUs in mesa .. this should be pretty great for graphics on nixos-mobile when wlroots vk backend is done
<colemickens>
is that in sight, or is that still a long-term thing?
<samueldr>
I guess that all depends on what mainline provides
<samueldr>
which is highly variable
<colemickens>
sorry I just meant the wlroots vulkan backend
<samueldr>
ah
<edrex>
seems like emersion has been moving really fast doing foundational work abstracting away EGL stuff
<samueldr>
but I was thinking also generally about *everything else*
<samueldr>
my point was more about that it wouldn't work with non-mainline devices I assume
<samueldr>
so in a purely practical point of view, might not be as useful for phones as one would hope :(
<edrex>
oh got it. yes, you would need to run mainline kernel to use freedreno driver
<edrex>
and there aren't very many devices where that's possible without losing functionality elsewhere
<samueldr>
yep
<samueldr>
purely _practical_ point of view...
<samueldr>
because otherwise, I'd much rather everything be mainlined!
<edrex>
i have a little stack of old (mostly various moto g) phones I want to start playing with as soon as I get more of my fixed infra moved over to nixos
<samueldr>
I can't help with mainline porting, no experience yet
<samueldr>
but otherwise, I sure can help
<samueldr>
though currently I'm not even sure things are working for armv7
<samueldr>
so depending on their vintage
<samueldr>
(I'm currently trying to do something with an armv7 device and uh... I'm having some troubles right now)
<edrex>
ohh yeah they're probably mostly 32bit
<samueldr>
motorola were shipping 32 bit kernels on 64 bit CPUs
<samueldr>
depending on when in the lineage of G* phones, you might have a 64 bit cpu
<samueldr>
and then with armv7 there's the whole issue with no binary cache :)
<samueldr>
but in practice I should look into fixing the armv7 issues
<samueldr>
if there really are issues
<edrex>
is there any issue with a 32 bit bootloader and 64bit OS? On intel, 32bit UEFI requires special handling (dealing with that on a first gen macbook pro rn)
<samueldr>
AFAICT none
<samueldr>
I had nothing special to do
<edrex>
I will catalogue my hw on my wiki once I get around to evaluating them
<samueldr>
I assume the bootloader is 64 bit still?
<edrex>
you mean on intel? yeah i guess
<samueldr>
nah, on qualcomm hardware
<edrex>
oh, got it
<samueldr>
I know the thing on intel is weird
<samueldr>
but don't know much more
<samueldr>
oh, I guess I could try i686 for the one known 32 bit armv7 issue
