<ashkitten>
we're looking into getting a few of these intel pcie cards that have a bunch of pentium cpus on them
<ashkitten>
wonder if i could set up a nix build server on it
<ashkitten>
thing is, they'd be sorta their own machines, not actually one 900-something core machine
<ashkitten>
so i could do something like distcc but i'm not sure about anything else
<ashkitten>
can nix use distcc to build stuff?
<ashkitten>
tbh i'd love to have something like hydra for my own personal nixpkgs repo
<ashkitten>
but only building the things that aren't in cache.nixos.org
<pie_>
idk about distcc but i think what you need is a nix daemon and if youve got a nix daemon you can build stuff/
<pie_>
?
<ashkitten>
hmm
<pie_>
like, this is a normal thing for people to do but ive never done it
<ashkitten>
i just want it to automatically pull from my repo, build stuff that's not in the upstream binary cache, and make the built paths available as my own personal binary cache
<ashkitten>
or like, shove it onto cachix or something. im not picky i guess

how does one write software that doesnt need constant maintenance?

pie_: Ask Knuth. Maybe the trick is to countenance no changes to the spec, and let everyone else's ecosystem cope with that.
<pie_>
XD
<pie_>
forgot to say thanks re: <jackdk> I am glad someone is trying to unify that abstraction
<sphalerite>
Does anyone know if windows has a backup system similar to time machine that I might be able to set up a nixos server for?
<pie_>
i heard something about shadow drives or images or something at some point but i really dont know

sphalerite: Do you have ZFS?
<sphalerite>
jasongrossman: yes
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: And you know about zfs.autoSnapshot.enable = true; ?
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: There's also the following, if you want to enable other machines to back up to yours:
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: Oh damn. I misread your message. Sorry.
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: My perceptual system skips right over the word "windows".
<sphalerite>
:D
<das_j>
Is anyone here hosting the matrix irc bridge on nixos?
<pie_>
technically windows *does* have a zfs implementation xD
<pie_>
not sure what state its in though
<gchristensen>
interesting, I wonder when that was posted
<gchristensen>
oh weird, jarmac and I posted the same thing like 10 days apart :P

(tips for recording PA input and output simultaneously? Need to record a call and its impressively hard to do on Android)
<sphalerite>
colemickens: parecord should be able to do it
<sphalerite>
once with -d @DEFAULT_MONITOR@ (for the output) and once without`
<ar>
`/62
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: Thanks for bringing parecord to my attention.
<sphalerite>
jasongrossman: but tbh any recording tool that can interact with pulseaudio should be able to record from monitors
<sphalerite>
oh wait you're not colemickens lol
<sphalerite>
jasongrossman: see also its counterpart pacat
<jasongrossman>
sphalerite: I just happened to be interested in the same thing as colemickens.
<sphalerite>
:)
<jackdk>
so they're both in the same equivalence class. close enough `;-)`

<clever>
colemickens: using `pactl load_module module_loopback` you can create a pair of loopback devices (load it twice)
<clever>
colemickens: then using pavucontrol, you can select the input and output for each one
<clever>
colemickens: then `pactl load_module module_null_sink` to create a fake destination, that both loopbacks can go into
<clever>
then parecord the null sink monitor, which is the mix of the 2 things the loopbacks are capturing
<colemickens>
Nice. I think I'd seen something like that in the past, but couldn't Google my way back.
<colemickens>
clever, you often have very good answers for me, or inspiration buried in your repos, and I appreciate both of those things. Thank you :)
<colemickens>
As do most people here, but I'm in a grateful mood :)
<colemickens>
I had wound up just writing a quick shell script to record both sides. (Though, it turns out the CC company's policy is to hangup if the customer decides to record the call too.)

anyone have a good recipe for blueberry pie?
<das_j>
gchristensen: I should have on down in the kitchen, wait
<gchristensen>
waiting =)
<das_j>
gchristensen: Sorry, looks like I threw that out
<das_j>
I could check the books, but it's unlikely they'll give something you cannot find on chefkoch
<gchristensen>
no worries, I have one which looks promising :{)
<gchristensen>
:)
<das_j>
nice :}
<gchristensen>
and to be honest, these blueberries are perfect -- so it'll take some work to mess them up :P
<adisbladis>
gchristensen: Do you guys have bilberries in the us?
<etu>
gchristensen: Sounds awesome :)
<adisbladis>
(bilberries are also known as "european blueberry")
<gchristensen>
hmm and they're different from what I know to be as blueberries?
<gchristensen>
they look very similar
<adisbladis>
I believe they are closely related
<adisbladis>
gchristensen: They taste very different
<gchristensen>
hmmm I'm trying to find a description of the flavor
<adisbladis>
Much smaller berries, stronger sweeter & juicer taste
<gchristensen>
"Bilberries have a more intense, fruity, sweet and tangy flavor." I'm in!
<adisbladis>
gchristensen: You should be able to find some bilberry jam if you have a local ikea
<adisbladis>
gchristensen: Even though the jar says "sylt blåbär" which translates to "jam blueberry" it's not made from blueberries.
<gchristensen>
they are strikingly beautiful. I'll keep an eye out for them, fresh or jammed
<adisbladis>
:)
<gchristensen>
I'll get anything I can make a pie with :)
<adisbladis>
I miss having free access to them :)
<gchristensen>
childhood?
<adisbladis>
gchristensen: Yeah :) Also they grow wild _everywhere_ so you can just pick a piece of random forest and go to pick them
<adisbladis>
It's incredibly common
<gchristensen>
haha wow, that is cool
<gchristensen>
as a child we could pick oranges if we were lucky, but mostly spiders and aligators
<adisbladis>
Oh wow
<joepie91>
picking alligators does not sound like much fun
<adisbladis>
Must be awesome to be a child with alligators around
<adisbladis>
Or maybe it's something that seems fun and exotic but isn't in practice?
<gchristensen>
(kidding about picking them ...) the nearest river was had a huge aligator population. you couldn't go swimming without seeing them
<gspia>
gchristensen: this is not a quarantee of successfull pie, but if your local store has readymade dough (paste) that you can spread to the casserole, then the rest is easy: mix the berries with sour cream (1 can or about 200 ml) and enough sugar (say 1dl) and vanilla sugar (say 3 tea spoons) as well. Then to owen for about 30 minutes. Real pros pre-heat the paste for 5-10 minutes and know better, how much to add those sugars...
<gchristensen>
oh! sour cream sounds interesting!
<gspia>
(This is for about 24-26 cm diameter casserole, producing quite flat pie)
<gspia>
yeah, they combine very nicely with sugar. And about the pastes: in the local store near us, we have those for both sweat and salty pies. For berry pie I'd choose a sweet one.
<gspia>
s/they combine/it combines/

anyone here using darktable?
<spacekookie>
I do, though I'm not particularly good with it
<andi->
on X11? Does OpenCL/OpenGL support work for you?
<andi->
I have the impression it is a lot slower then last time I used it..
<spacekookie>
I'm using X11, yea. I've not actually paid much attention to hardware accel though
<spacekookie>
I'm using it on an X230 so not exactly a powerhouse to begin with
<spacekookie>
Might have a look at it tomorrow. I'm curious now
<andi->
I just added opencl to the buildInputs and recompiled. Didn't change the fact that it shows "not supported" in the options dialog. Might still be due to wayland
