<colemickens> I sure would like to go back to a year ago when Google actually tried to respect the terms in my search instead of having to use quotes in 50%+ of my queries.
<jackdk> I get better results with DDG these days, and I wish I could say it's because the duck has improved
<colemickens> DDG is weird. Sometimes pretty decent. Sometimes oddly way off base. Sometimes has ZERO results for things that have tens of thousands of results on Google, for topics that aren't even hours-old or anything.
<colemickens> I wish it were better. I need to see if I can do something other than "!g" in most of my DDG queries to use StartPage instead.
* colemickens grumbles... Between that and Edgium that I downloaded today :/
<jackdk> you mean !startpage?

<srhb> I feel like I was able to make virt-manager/viewer never pass through my shortcuts to switch workspace -- does anyone know if that's really a thing or I imagined it?
<srhb> (That is, I want to be able to switch workspace without first using the "let go of focus" shortcut)

<gchristensen> I feel like in the past few months so many of my annoyances with Linux have gone away
<gchristensen> I sorted out how to upgrade the firmware on my dock, which made it much more reliable. and I switched to sway, which has made my hotplugged display work *every time*.
<Taneb> :D
<emily> colemickens: jackdx: looks like !sp and !s also work.
<emily> *jackdk
<Taneb> ...what does KDE stand for?
<gchristensen> it used to stand for K(ool) Development Environment
<emily> Desktop, surely?
<gchristensen> erm yeah
<emily> I think it now stands for nothing and refers to a "community".
<emily> and you're not supposed to call any specific software "KDE".
<gchristensen> right
<Taneb> Right
<emily> oh I guess it's "KDE Frameworks" now, not like "K Framework" or whatever
<emily> so KDE is back in the project names at least
<emily> GNOME refers to an "experience" that can be obtained while using the GNOME Software Product on a GNOME Device. Please consult your local GNOME Doctor for more information.
<Taneb> I think if I tried to find my local gnome doctor people might think I'm even weirder than they do already
<jasongrossman> Taneb++

<gchristensen> dangit, I've been struggling to use the nixos test framework to make a VM to develop a project in-- but its really not seutp for this
<gchristensen> but I *do* need to develop in a VM, and the answer has been so obviously sitting there in front of me this whole time: nixops. d'oh!
<samueldr> nixos-rebuild build-vm?
<gchristensen> oooh
<samueldr> build-vm is so amazing when you have a non-automatable test to do on a system to bisect
<gchristensen> yes it is :D
<samueldr> (or, let's say, too hard to automate)
<gchristensen> this whole nixos thing is such a good idea
<gchristensen> way to go Armijn

<Taneb> Does anyone truly need anything?
<gchristensen> there is a whole pyramid of needs!
<ar> Taneb: you need food, water, and sleep
<Taneb> Allegedly
<Taneb> Narrower point: it's technically true that no-one needs NixOS, but the same can be said of any particular operating system
<joepie91> the same is true of any tech
<joepie91> we don't use tech because we *need* it, we (ideally) use tech because it produces a net positive result compared to not using it
<joepie91> :P
<Taneb> Yes.
<Taneb> I am responding to andi-'s coworoker
<joepie91> aye, was just broadening it :)
<gchristensen> pedantry for the pedantry gods? :)
<joepie91> gchristensen: well, *technically speaking* it's not pedantry, it's a broadening statement... :D
<gchristensen> clarifications for the clarity throne!
<Taneb> :)
<joepie91> so.

<tilpner> I was quite surprised there was no sanoid package yet
<gchristensen> someday,s Nix's sandbox saves your life, somedays it makes your brain melt out your ears.
<tilpner> (But I'll try to test it before I PR anything)
<tilpner> Oh yes, I had that especially bad when I was starting VMs from within Nix builds, and then wondering why it couldn't see certain paths
<tilpner> (Paths in the store, mounted via 9p)
<gchristensen> hehe
<gchristensen> I'm fighting a nix-build in a nix-build, where the interior one wants to use Nix's coreutils

<ivan> and the nixos module for it
<srhb> Yeah, it's like magic.
<srhb> If only I could go back in time so I could go back in time sooner.

<manveru> samueldr: ever heard the story of referer? :)
<samueldr> yes
<samueldr> (but you should share it for others :D)
<manveru> though in that case it wasn't intentional... i guess, so not fitting :(
<manveru> long story short: their dictionary didn't know referrer, so they didn't notice in the spell-check back in 96 :)
<manveru> and by the time they noticed, others were using the header already... so it was just kept that way
<manveru> user-agent history is much more fun and full of anecdotes :D
<joepie91> see also: Windows 10
<joepie91> it being "Windows 10" because "Windows 9" would hit a lot of poorly written regexes for Windows 95/98
<samueldr> widely spread, but actually unverified from memory, no?
<joepie91> afaik it was confirmed by a Microsoft person
<samueldr> good, I know at first it wasn't verified, but still spread like wildfire
<joepie91> on Twitter if I'm not mistaken
<joepie91> as these things go
<joepie91> :p
<joepie91> but yeah, that's what I recall, I may be wrong of course
<joepie91> either way it sounds like a completely valid reason to me, heh
<joepie91> decent way to sidestep the issue of shitty version detection, while still throwing the marketing department a bone
<joepie91> because 10 is a nice round number
<manveru> they just didn't want to appear to copy apples X
<__monty__> Except now they look like they were *extra* eager to get to 10/X.
<manveru> damn, the more i dig into the nixos module system, the more i'm surprised it works at all...
<gchristensen> you're in the middle of where the magic happens
<gchristensen> written by a brilliant person
<gchristensen> hard to page all that in :P
<manveru> :)
<joepie91> the cycle of reading up on seemingly-magical production systems: "ah yeah that makes sense, I could do that" -> "wait, wtf, why is it doing that, that looks wrong" -> "oh I see, that's pretty clever actually- wait, why is it doing that other thing, it looks wrong" -> "oh that's really clever too", rinse repeat
<joepie91> and eventually you reach the level where it's all dirty hacks and exploiting edge cases in the underlying system
<gchristensen> now make that cycle about a particularly magical recursion scheme and you're in a real spot.
<joepie91> with some remnants of a once-elegant-looking system
<joepie91> that has since been abandoned because as it turns out, reality is not elegant
<joepie91> :P
<manveru> just one of those times when i wish it was guile :P
<manveru> oh well, i give up for now, i'm sure clever could write this in 10 minutes anyway :P
<manveru> (probably already has somewhere)
<gchristensen> DE/NL friends, what does "Rx" mean to you? in the context of a store
<manveru> like... a store where you buy stuff?
<gchristensen> right
<manveru> nothing comes to mind for that, sounds like a prefix for a graphics card or something
<gchristensen> cool, ok
<manveru> hmm https://cancel.fm/ripcord/ seems neat... just wish it was open source :|
<gchristensen> Rx in the US means prescriptions / pharmacy
<averell> ah, then RxJava makes much more sense
<gchristensen> lol
<__monty__> As in rescriptions and rmacy?
<gchristensen> no idea :P
<joepie91> gchristensen: "Rx" means nothing to me other than "RxJS"

<infinisil> General purpose programming finally possible in Nix: https://github.com/infinisil/nix-rts
* gchristensen throws his computer in to the shredder
<gchristensen> for your next trick, implement Nix in Nix
<gchristensen> it'll be faster than Nix, just like pypy is faster than python
<gchristensen> spacex is launching a big rocket in 1h45m btw
<infinisil> Great idea, can't go wrong with that!
<infinisil> I should now combine https://github.com/infinisil/nix-rts with https://github.com/infinisil/nixlisp to get a general purpose lisp in Nix :)
<averell> wow, even with a great roguelike included
<infinisil> Add this to your configuration.nix, such that you can't rebuild your system without winning the game

<colemickens> google support just told me not to try to charge devices with my pixel 3 because it will cause the "elections to reverse" and damage my devices.
<gchristensen> pleas, please, please do that

<gchristensen> samueldr++
<{^_^}> samueldr's karma got increased to 71
<samueldr> colemickens: pretty sure your librem will have its electrons reversed if you try to charge a pixel 3 with it :3
<samueldr> hum, elections or electrons? now I'm confused as to whether it's a typo or the support was just... so bad
<colemickens> oh it's not a typo on my part
<jasongrossman> samueldr++
<{^_^}> samueldr's karma got increased to 72
<samueldr> hmm, depending on where you live, maybe you need to charge more stuff using your pixel?
* colemickens mutters something about aligning his bodies electrons.
<jasongrossman> samueldr: Right. I charge things with my Pixel in Australia, which drains it, and then I take it to Europe and that recharges it.
<samueldr> just like the toilet water
<samueldr> it goes the other way once you cross the equator
<gchristensen> joepie91: so are you giving it a go?
<gchristensen> joepie91: I'm too paranoid for my own good these days :/
