<ldlework> Anyone have the issue with Steam that game settings are not preserved?

<samueldr> :( the thing I'm trying to build is so badly conceived it's astounding; layers upon layers of indirection and half-hardcoded tool names and paths, if it works I'll have to figure out a good way to build it cleanly :(
<infinisil> Oh boy
<samueldr> oh, also, the git repo includes a toolchain :/
<samueldr> (I'm resorting to using a debian VM to see if the thing even works)
<infinisil> What do you mean by includes a toolchain?
<samueldr> gcc and friends binaries
<infinisil> Oh I see, phew
<infinisil> Have fun with that
<samueldr> oh, *32 bit* toolchain :|
<samueldr> though this is a fork of a project; if it works I'm going back up the chain and make the upstream project work cleanly first
<elvishjerricco> mdash: Are you using that steamplay thing on NixOS, or other Linux?

<samueldr> >:| their scripts send stderr to the good ol' bit bucket /dev/null
<samueldr> fun! it's never specified, but it's assumed the packing script will fail in what I'm following, and to just continue by using a product from the thing that fails :/

<elvishjerricco> infinisil: I had to drop out for a while. Learn anything new about the g/uid thing?
<infinisil> Not really
<infinisil> My conclusion however is
<infinisil> That it's not needed. All services can just check whether the permissions are right at the start and fix them if they're not
<infinisil> Because this won't occur in 99.99% of cases, and because in 99% of this 0.01%, the number of files is small, this won't even be noticeable

<MichaelRaskin> Noticed a funny wording choice for Discourse guidelines that seem to be the same across communities: «If you’re unsure, ask yourself how you would feel if your post was featured on the front page of the New York Times.» Erm. If anything about minor technical details was mentioned on a major non-tech publication front page, I would expect it to be stalking-like…
<simpson> I always wonder whether the post would get NYT's editing first. I'd like to think that my grammar is stellar, but I'm not a professional.
<MichaelRaskin> They can start with removing u in colour…
<MichaelRaskin> And if it is «what we mean, not what we write», I can only hope their code is about what is written and deployed, not about what is intended…
<simpson> Personally I think that these sorts of "headline rules" are meant to cow people into staying quiet and meek.

<samueldr> I'm going stir crazy, it's terrible, I feel like I'm "this" close to get edk2 (tianocore) working on allwinner, but there's hole in my knowledge about all that boot process that's probably "that" size :/
<MichaelRaskin> Ouch, ARM boot process
<samueldr> yeah, all self-learned, without actual documentation sources :/
<samueldr> and obviously, on a badly documented platform, with bad tooling
<samueldr> oh, and I don't have the hardware for debugging things at boot, (nor the knowledge) which makes this "fun"
