gchristensen: I'm only here for a brief moment, but I agree with srhb's observations in that thread; optimize for the common case, provide an escape hatch for the edge cases
<joepie91>
(also, what *are* the upgrade challenges? if Nix can't be cleanly upgraded in a multi-user env, that seems like it's its own bug that needs solving)

<pie__>
The nix-devel mailing list is now replaced by our discourse forum instance which is also usable by email: discourse.nixos.org. "
<pie__>
why does this just keep getting worse xD
<srhb>
pie__: What do you mean? What's worse?
<simpson>
Discourse might not be great, but mailing lists are pretty terrible.
<pie__>
went from mailing list to google mailing list to discourse
<srhb>
Ah.. OK, I like discourse.
<srhb>
Much better than the weird google thing at least.
<pie__>
well, it does say discourse provides an email endpoint *scratches head*
<srhb>
Besides, if the old way had worked better, clearly you would have protested in time. :D
* srhb
ducks
<pie__>
:P
<pie__>
noone cares about my protests
<pie__>
also, i dont really *use* mailing lists, but i dont mind them
<srhb>
I feel the same way.
<pie__>
my gripe with the google switch was mainly the lack of access without a google email, IIRC
<srhb>
But this is actually a UI that I like. As opposed to the weirdness of google groups.
<joepie91>
google groups always felt to me like they weren't *quite* sure whether they wanted to be a mailinglist or a forum, so they tried to be both... by importing the worst aspects of both?
<joepie91>
it's an annoying barrier for seasoned mailing list user... and the most awkward forum interface on earth for forum users
<joepie91>
well okay, maybe launchpad wins that last award, but google groups is pretty close :P
<sphalerite>
andi-: the filesystem one feels out of place lol

I have so many gems in my chat logs, but they're all so hard to find
<andi->
gchristensen: do you need elasticsearch for your logs yet?
<gchristensen>
yes
<gchristensen>
honestly yes
<gchristensen>
I'd also like an elasticsearch for every git commit to a repo
<andi->
switch to quassel then you have a database (at least):P
<joepie91>
oh man, tracking down an erroneous duplicate entry in my bookkeeping is just the most fun thing on earth... /s
<joepie91>
did I mention that gnucash is Not Very Good
<gchristensen>
I pay for YNAB and am very happy about it
<joepie91>
there's not a lot of options when you want to do bookkeeping in NL as a freelancer, and of the options that do exist, the vast majority of them are Hotel California services; you can enter your data, but it can never leave...
<andi->
joepie91: have you considered ledger? :)
<andi->
I oversee/check the bookings of the local CCC club and we wrote a thing python script on-top of ledger that ensures things like correct bookings, allows you to import bookings from bank accounts and match using a list of expressions (and then perform actions).

NixOS's ofborg infrastructure is undergoing a bit of a risky update. Hopefully nothing goes wrong. I'll keep you posted. See #nixos-borg for finer grained updates. Things _will_ be broken for at least a few minutes, but hopefully _only_ a few minutes.
<joepie91>
so
<joepie91>
having just completed tax forms using gnucash, I can say that gnucash is very... uh... GNU-y :)
<gchristensen>
do you open it up and say "whew, smells like free software in here, if you know what I mean?"
<joepie91>
gchristensen: not far off
<joepie91>
it has a very, err... do-what-you-tell-it-to UI
<joepie91>
by which I mean it completely fails at anticipating the user's intentions :)
<joepie91>
also, it mystifies me why after upwards of 7 years of mailing list threads, there is *still* no way to batch-reassign transactions to different accounts
<joepie91>
I had to write my own XML-mangling code to get my books in order, for deity's sake
<joepie91>
apparently the account assignment logic lives specifically in the Quicken importer
<joepie91>
so if you import from *any* other format it just dumps all your transactions in "unspecified account"
<joepie91>

I must say that working with nixpkgs on Darwin made me more open towards accepting the possibility of using a Mac at some point.. But then again their keyboards will kill my hands I am sure...
<__monty__>
I don't get. that. Some of the most comfortable keyboards I've used. All the mechanical keyboards people rave about are way too thick imo.
<andi->
I type randomly on co-workers macs and the newer the mac the worse the expericne is
<__monty__>
Laptops?
<gchristensen>
different people have different requirements and injuries
<simpson>
I have to have an Apple for work. It's terrible. I feel like I'm typing on a rich kid's toy.
<andi->
lol
<andi->
simpson: that explains it pretty well :)

It's too bad no one can do a decent laptop that also looks sleek though.
<andi->
what is sleek to you?
<__monty__>
Not cheap plastic.
<__monty__>
The aluminum macbooks usually look good.
<andi->
so must be aluminium or is there non-cheap plastic for you?
<__monty__>
I'm sure there is. Just haven't seen any on laptops yet. (Not that I see that many laptop models.)
<andi->
at my old work place we had a few of the fake apple Asus notebooks.. those looked "sleek" for about 10 seconds and thenit was terrible. It was very badly done silverish plastic + a bit of aluminiu,.
<gchristensen>
I think the XPSs look pretty decent
<gchristensen>
they don't try to be fake about it
<andi->
I usually like my thinkpads plastic. It is pretty robust and there is an older Yoga that also has an aluminium frame and I did run two nails in the wall with it already...
<simpson>
I don't care what it looks like. I'm writing code, not trying to get a date.
<andi->
simpson: well then carry an external keyboard? ;)
<gchristensen>
I take it as a sign of whats inside
<simpson>
andi-: That makes about as much sense as rhythmically slamming the laptop into my desk repeatedly until it ceases to be recognizable as a laptop.
<simpson>
It might be cathartic, and possibly even helpful, but it is not a solution, just a feeling.
<__monty__>
If I'm looking at something all day I prefer the terrible material and design don't annoy me every time I notice them.
<joepie91>
I'd argue that modern Thinkpads don't look like cheap plastic

not sure how far back that goes, but I think samueldr gathered old logfiles from some people
<pie__>
doesnt seem to find what im looking for
<pie__>
the google result seems to be relativelty recent
<samueldr>
LnL: only my own logs, pegged at january 2017 since I wasn't sure about everything before in my quassel database
<samueldr>
(I parted and joined during 2016 a couple of times I think)
<pie__>
ok i just installed the nixos demo version of renoise with -p renoise
<pie__>
this distro is
<pie__>
the
<pie__>
coolest
<pie__>
distro
<samueldr>
though since I have a specific date it's probably easy enough to add other logs in the future
<samueldr>
I think, using the nixos.org logs, we only have from september to december 2016 missing if I ever do an import (missing meaning I'd need some contributors to share theirs)
<samueldr>
pie__: the software used for the logs is a bit confusing
<samueldr>
you probably want to use the search box at the left
<LnL>
oh right, there are old logs there
<samueldr>
the top one only filters in the day
<pie__>
oh
<pie__>
samueldr, that was probabyl iy
<pie__>
it
<samueldr>
yeah, I wanted to add a couple patches to it, one would be removing the top search
<pie__>
s***, i dont get any audio output from renoise
<samueldr>
(though, to be fair, it's a rocking awesome piece of software, it REALLY was set and forget)
<LnL>
samueldr: my znc logs start 2016-09-21, I nuked the host with everything before that
<samueldr>
I had other offers, but in reality the main issue is that they are "lossy" with regards to the representation the software used
<samueldr>
(IIRC)
<samueldr>
so the main issue I had was that it needed me to do some work :)
<samueldr>
way too lazy to do anything :)
<samueldr>
(my IRC client is quassel; the logs are in a postgreSQL database, it was much easier to migrate them to the irc log thing)
<LnL>
ah
