<ldlework>
can anyone see where I am going with this?
<ldlework>
Basically you have a folder with overlays/default.nix and overlays/unstable/
<ldlework>
any files in overlays/unstable/ gets added to the unstable overlays
<ldlework>
and any other files get added to the normal overlays
<ldlework>
i don't quite understand why it doesn't work
<ldlework>
I really feel like it should I've read it over and over
<ldlework>
refactored it real nice
<ldlework>
all of the expressions loaded are of the self: super: kind
<ldlework>
ah crap wrong channel

I don't really understand how you can end up with code that makes such database queries

queries in a for loop? :)

Damnit, my right hand hurts from typing
<gchristensen>
where?
* infinisil
tries to find a pic of hand anatomy to know the names of parts
<gchristensen>
or take a picture of your hand and draw on it... that is what I usually do.
<infinisil>
gchristensen: Between wrist and lower arm on the inside, the main joint of the thumb, and it's tensed up all over
<gchristensen>
seen a dr?
<infinisil>
Nope
<gchristensen>
do :)
<infinisil>
gchristensen: Can they say anything more than just "yeah your wrist sucks, don't type"
<gchristensen>
yes
<infinisil>
I may just try taking a break for some time, which is possible because currently it's the semester break
<infinisil>
But I'd really like to finish up that RFC..
<gchristensen>
I wish I could go back to 10yrs ago and gone to the dr, and taken the break I should have
<infinisil>
gchristensen: How was your process of doctor visits and recovery? I know that the operation seems to have gone well :), but I don't know about before that
<samueldr>
infinisil: study for your finals^W^W^W^W consult
<gchristensen>
once I found a dr who believed I had problems it went very smoothly
<infinisil>
Believed? "Hey dr. my wrist hurts like hell" "That's just phantom pain, you good, stop whining"
<infinisil>
I *could* try to learn a one-handed keyboard layout :P
<samueldr>
infinisil: (not a doctor) compensating for something using the other side of the body is generally a no-no AFAIK
<gchristensen>
indeed
<infinisil>
Hmm yeah, but why do I only have problems with the right hand? The left is mostly fine
<gchristensen>
not uncommon
<gchristensen>
do you have a bad healthcare system where you live?
<infinisil>
Nah, pretty good, switzerland
<gchristensen>
so why would you do something stupid like ignore the pain?
<infinisil>
Well, sometimes it's going away a bit. Even when I'm typing, sometimes it's a bit worse again like now
<gchristensen>
yeah
<samueldr>
infinisil: do you intend to to computer work in the future?
<infinisil>
But yeah, I'll consider getting an appointment tomorrow
<infinisil>
samueldr: Yes of course!
<gchristensen>
my pain came and went for a while, and I was very irresponsible and self-medicated with ergo hardware and other techniques until I couldn't work
<infinisil>
I should indeed take care of my hands because of that
<gchristensen>
they're your money-makers
<gchristensen>
lose your hands lose your livelihood
<LnL>
yeah, if start thinking of stuff like buying another keyboard you should probably talk to a doctor
<infinisil>
Yeah, thanks for the advice, I'll go to a doc
<LnL>
I'd get pretty nervous if this happened to me :/
<samueldr>
keyboards aren't a panacea
<samueldr>
they help mainly *if* what they replace is the source of the issue
<infinisil>
I did indeed get myself an ergodox ez already :P, but mainly because I needed a new keyboard anyways
<infinisil>
But it doesn't cut it
<infinisil>
Certainly better than other keyboards though
<infinisil>
where other = standard ones
<infinisil>
Why can't keyboards be vertical, might be much better
<gchristensen>
hard to say, maybe they are
<infinisil>
Hands aren't made to be held horizontal, at least mine
<infinisil>
I guess you'd need some pretty good arm rests so you don't have to hold your arms up all the time lol
<gchristensen>
I think the idea with that one is your arms are resting along the side, which is tough to manage unless you're standing
<gchristensen>
depending on where your injury is, rests can be harmful
<infinisil>
Yeah
<infinisil>
gchristensen: You're using the kinesis advantage now I think?
<gchristensen>
yeah, I have three
<infinisil>
Three kinesis advantages? What for?
<samueldr>
hands, feet, ????
<srhb>
samueldr: face.
<gchristensen>
one for home, one for the office, and one for travel. now that I work from home, one for clientA's computer, one for clientB's computer, and one for my computer
<joepie91>
samueldr: more questions produced than answered..
<joepie91>
:)
<srhb>
samueldr: How else would you write bogus sha256s :)
<samueldr>

infinisil: So, I had finger problems too, and while I got a lot of help from switching to a keyboard with mechanical switches (woo cherry brown) I also ended up finding out after going to the doctor that I had a huge vitamin D deficiency
<maurer>
like, enough that they re-ran the labs because they thought they had fucked it up
<maurer>
after getting on appropriate supplements, problems are mostly gone, so well worth seeing them
<maurer>
it may be a simple fix
<samueldr>
curiout maurer what kind of "finger problems"?
<samueldr>
curious*
<maurer>
My fingers would hurt after using the computer for maybe 4 hours
<maurer>
Like, both joints to the tip
<maurer>
Mechanical switches gave more travel, which helped due to less bottoming out on keys
<maurer>
but evidently I was just wearing my fingers down pretty hard and with low vit D, my body was having a hard time repairing itself fast enough
<andi->
I had issues with my joints/backside of my right hand. It seems that was entirely doen due to mouse movements... I am now exclusively using keyboards or a trackball.. no more traditinal mouse for me..
<maurer>
(I was slow to go to the doctor since it wasn't a wrist problem, so I was pretty sure it wasn't carpal)
<maurer>
Yeah, I use almost exclusively keyboard
<maurer>
vimium is a very nice extension
<infinisil>
Heh, I could be a candidate for low vitamin D, isn't that produced by going in the sun? Yeah I'm not doing that very often
<andi->
I also switched to the advantage2 a while ago.. not because of pain more because of pre-cautions / trying to type more properly using "all" my fingers.
<andi->
infinisil: yes, sunlight..
<infinisil>
Also kinda feeling tired and lazy all the time.. Not sure if that's connected
<maurer>
Yeah, but don't just blindly guess at it - that was an issue for me, but they can run a quick lab to be sure
<maurer>
and yes, that can be connected :P
<andi->
Maybe we can get a group discount for all nix people? Safe some money for the doctors / insurances ;)
<samueldr>
paying what exactly? (sorry)
<samueldr>
(two clues in the previous sentence)
<andi->
It was merely a joke regarding fees for treatment/doctor visits/... in some countries that costs money I heard. :)
kisik21 has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds]

yeah, I understood, clue 1: not knowing about paying, clue 2: using sorry as a punctuation ;)

my impression is I pay less in taxes, and get less in services
<andi->
That sounds fair-ish?
<samueldr>
I hate going anywhere near "political", but yeah, that sounds probably right
<samueldr>
I know some around me find me weird to want to pay more taxes to get more from "the system"
<andi->
(I still think healthcare should be free - most of the time)
<ldlework>
Why not food?
<samueldr>
food should be accessible, which is a whole other can of worm and means many things (it's multi-facetted); the goal would be ensuring no one has to be hungry
<ldlework>
But why would healthcare be free and not food?
<samueldr>
luxury
<ldlework>
huh?
<samueldr>
you could subsist on GOVERNMENT APPROVED FOOD SUBSTANCE #1, but probably prefer something else
<ldlework>
Same for health-care.
<samueldr>
while healthcare here was for a long time handled with only one level of service
<ldlework>
This doesn't address why food isn't free.
<ldlework>
If healthcare is.
<ldlework>
Or housing.
<samueldr>
probably should be
* ldlework
goans.
<samueldr>
but it's not the same as health care; hard to put it into words
<samueldr>
the same approach for all threes cannot work
<samueldr>
in the current socitety
<samueldr>
(and apply this locally to where I live)
<ldlework>
Some would argue, the approach can't work for any of them unless you ignore the consequences.
<samueldr>
(situation is different everywhere)
* gchristensen
is sorry to have opened this can of worms
<samueldr>
:)
<ldlework>
So far we just disagree; I don't see any worms.
<andi->
well I would argue that the ultimate goal would be that nothing costs money and people grow up and are responsible, nice people.. but that clearly never happens so starting with healtcare and accomplishing that would be great already...
<samueldr>
^
<ldlework>
I love that advocating for free stuff is the same as "growing up" and being "responsible and nice"
* andi-
dreams of a money-free society..
<ldlework>
That rhetoric will never convince anyone.
<andi->
ldlework: I am not a politician nor trying to.. I put it into my own words.. I am not even trying to convince..
<ldlework>
Sure, but it is pretty arrogant and insulting.
<ldlework>
"It would be nice if everyone just grew up and agreed with me"
<andi->
why? Stating my thoughts?
<andi->
my opinions?
<samueldr>
you're putting words in andi-'s mouth I think
<gchristensen>
I think we found the worms
<ldlework>
"the ultimate goal would be that nothing costs money and people grow up and are responsible nice people"
<andi->
m(
<samueldr>
"just grew up and agreed with me"
* andi-
