<red[evilred]>
Anyone here played with the pine A64 compute modules with NixOS?
<red[evilred]>
with only 2G RAM - I can't help but think that would be problematic
<red[evilred]>
don't get me wrong - I love the idea of 7 of them... but with 2G of memory can you even do a nixos-rebuild switch without chewing into swap with that little memory?
<samueldr>
they're SOPINE, no?
<samueldr>
if so, it's the same as the Pine A64-LTS
<red[evilred]>
yes - SOPINE
<samueldr>
and the pinephone is really close
<red[evilred]>
Quad-Core ARM Cortex A53 64-Bit Processor as PINE A64 with 2G LPDDR3 RAM
<red[evilred]>
pretty slow
<samueldr>
the devkit is a SOPINE on a carrier board with a display and stuff
<samueldr>
well, the initial devkit :)
<red[evilred]>
but I really want to cluster
<red[evilred]>
and the RPi foundation didn't do themselves any favors with the new hardware format
<samueldr>
heh
<red[evilred]>
I'm really not a fan
<samueldr>
that's the least of my worry
<red[evilred]>
so what;s the most of your worry?
<red[evilred]>
:-)
<samueldr>
their vendor-specific ecosystem that's pretty hostile to standardization
<samueldr>
starting from their boot chain
<samueldr>
and then their vendor kernel that's just different enough from mainline that nothing "just works" with mainline
<samueldr>
imo, they are locking you to their ecosystem quite hard
<samueldr>
working on improving the generic aarch64 image is always more painful for no good reason because of the pi family of devices :/
<red[evilred]>
yeah
<red[evilred]>
although "standards" in aarch :-/
<red[evilred]>
I don't know enough about it all yet to be honet
<red[evilred]>
which is the main reason I ordered a more server-esque aarch64 machine

<samueldr>
already, there is SBBR and SBSA for servers
<samueldr>
any server-type hardware not following these are DoA
<samueldr>
for non-servers, there's EBBR that's quite new
<samueldr>
but it's basically standardizing the status quo
<samueldr>
minimal UEFI through u-boot
<samueldr>
and frankly, u-boot itself as the status quo is extremely good

gchristensen: and are the machines working nicely again?
<sphalerite>
gchristensen: and could I maybe have access to a machine sometime (same setup as yesterday would work nicely) to try and fix 5.4 on them?

sure
<gchristensen>
any time :)
<gchristensen>
and I have a bunch of another machine type which is slightly more exotic, if you wanted to try to figure out what is wrong with that one

Hey there, I'm tinkering around with my Cubietruck (ARMv7) and I'd like to try out NixOS on the board. I followed the instructions on the wikipage for NixOS_on_ARM for the BananaPI (because it's similar to my device) and I successfully compiled a recent u-boot. Next step seems to be to follow the generic installation steps to get the installer
<dsd>
image. But this is where I'm stuck. Where do I find/get an image of NixOS for ARMv7 arch? In the guide is written that the image is named something like sd-image-armv7l-linux.img but I only see images for aarch64.
<red[evilred]>
I don't know that we automatically build them anymore? But others here would know better...
<red[evilred]>
the crosscompilation process isn't too difficult I don't think
<red[evilred]>
I'm sure we do have versions somewhere though
<srk>
yup, there's no armv7 image built by hydra, you can cross build one
<dsd>
Thanks for the replies. @srk Is there a recent guide on how to cross compile NixOS somewhere?
