<superherointj> samueldr, I'm considering getting a Helios64 NAS device just like yours. Do know of any better option? My use case is to storage VMs, backups, shared data. But nothing too large. I would prefer nvme, but I don't know of any NAS option that is open.
<superherointj> I plan running NixOS on it. Poses like Buzzlightyear, "NixOS *everywhere*." (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/znmlgZv_P9o/maxresdefault.jpg)
<Ke> macchiatobin is open apart from phy fw and SCP fw.

<Ke> but currently mainline kernel is broken for me
<superherointj> Ke, seems interesting hardware, first time seeing it.
<Ke> I guess helios64 is an attractive offer for the price, assuming there are no other issues
<Ke> it's not available though
<Ke> there is a plan to make a revision2 though
<Ke> hopefully it's an improvements
<Ke> * hopefully it's an improvement
<superherointj> I think issue samueldr talked about will be fixed already (or newer shipments).
<superherointj> *on
<Ke> I did not even know he opened the package yet
<sphalerite> superherointj: which issue?
<superherointj> GigaEthernet port not working at 1Gbps but 100M/2.5G only.
<sphalerite> oh, damn, that does sound like a pain.
<sphalerite> I don't have 2.5G :|
<gchristensen> wow
<superherointj> But it is solvable still. (You can patch it by adding a wire, needs solder.) Or just use the other GigaEthernet port.
<superherointj> It has two ports. Affected one, I guess.
<sphalerite> oooh ok if one works that's good enough for me
<superherointj> What I really wanted was a multiple NVME NAS. That would be very nice.
<superherointj> And obviously, NixOS everywhere. I'm too stupid to manually configure anything.
<Ke> if mainline kernel works, nixos is the easy part almost always

<hexa-> superherointj: not sure how well virtualization works on the helios64
<superherointj> hexa-, I would be using it mostly for NAS really.
<hexa-> I'd look up "rk3399 kvm"
<Ke> on rk3399 it works, but you need to only use one core type or hack the kvm
<Ke> also low memory would be an issue
<hexa-> yep
<hexa-> can't partition what you don't have
* superherointj wants a honeycomb now. :)
<Ke> I'll get one, if it works for the early adopter here perhaps
<hexa-> I'll wait a few more years until that whole mess hopefully has sorted itself out
<hexa-> until then … maybe epyc embedded
<sphalerite> Ke: the early adopter here is thefloweringash :p
<Ke> hexa-: well mcbin regressed with 5.9 so often it's not all progress
<sphalerite> though that's with the vendor kernel, last I heard he hadn't tried it with mainline
<Ke> also pbp regressed for 5.9 agaik
<Ke> afaik
<hexa-> :<
<Ke> yes, mainline kernel is a must have, unless I am really desperate
<Ke> mcbin with 5.4 mainline will do, if nothing else
<Ke> nixos will almost certainly run with 5.4 for quite a while

<danielrf[m]> So I've been messing around with android cuttlefish (the modern android emulator / virtualized device). I'm hoping it can be a good anbox alternative in the future
<danielrf[m]> See cuttlefish subdir of cuttlefish branch of robotnix
<danielrf[m]> It works on x86, as well as cross-compiled to aarch64
<danielrf[m]> Even got it working on my pinebook pro
<danielrf[m]> Would be interested in hearing if it works for anyone else who's interested. CC samueldr

<samueldr> to be a good anbox *alternative* it would have to provide native windows to the system
<samueldr> but to replace the use case, it only has to be more compatible :)
<samueldr> and fast enough
<samueldr> so maybe it can be!
<samueldr> fast isn't the right word
<samueldr> efficient
<danielrf[m]> well it uses crosvm+virtio-gpu and involves a wayland socket, so I'm hoping it's possible to directly display to the desktop
<samueldr> oh, forgot about kvm being required for virt
<samueldr> which makes it unusable on qualcomm hw :)
<danielrf[m]> :(
<samueldr> unless the upcoming kvm-for-android stuff gets somehow backported
<danielrf[m]> so qualcomm doesn't allow accelerated virtualization at the hardware level? or is it just that the kernels they use don't have support for it?
<samueldr> they disable it in the initial exception levels before ABL/aboot is started
<danielrf[m]> I see, bummer then
<samueldr> the hardware supports it, it's being disabled in places we can't configure
<samueldr> extremely
<samueldr> all because their KVM is reserved for their server hardware
<samueldr> you know
<samueldr> those that everyone deploy everywhere
