<spacetato> hi, I just setup binfmt to emulate aarch64.
<spacetato> I have no problems with: ❯ nix build nixpkgs#bash --system aarch64-linux
<spacetato> but some packages are spitting out errors. I tried: ❯ nix build nixpkgs#tmux --system aarch64-linux
<spacetato> and was met with: builder for '/nix/store/wvi4zfq7bcp39jbq5g56g1nj77cd55hb-tmux-3.1c.drv' failed with exit code 1; last 2 log lines: ErroSysError~executing '/nix/store/93xwsgby6fchr8a58ckgcm2lf4nkv6fl-bash-4.4-p23/bin/bash': No such file or directory
<spacetato> anyone seen something like that before with the qemu&binfmt approach?

<red[evilred]> Do we support arm7?
<red[evilred]> the reason I'm asking is that I realized that a CVE in glibc that I'm chasing is arm7 specific
<red[evilred]> so if we don't even build it - t doesn't really make sense to risk all other archs right with a poke in something as critical
<hexa-> pretty sure armv7 boxes with nixos exist
<hexa-> wether or not we support that is a different question I guess
<hexa-> s/wether/whether/
<red[evilred]> Who could answer that question?
<red[evilred]> I don't think fixing this vuln is worth the risk tbh
<red[evilred]> what's teh likelyhood that someone is going to weaponize a glibc vuln to attack arm7 on NixOS users
<red[evilred]> afaik - there isn't even a POC for the exploit
<red[evilred]> hmm
<makefu> arm7 is supported, raspi2 for example only works by cross-compiling to arm7
alp has joined #nixos-aarch64
<red[evilred]> ahh
<makefu> (i have a raspi1 running with an arm6 image)
<red[evilred]> do we consider arm7 a first class citizen in archs? that's the question
<makefu> no, aarch64 and x86_64 are first-class
<makefu> (we have binary caches for them)
<red[evilred]> no binary caches for arm7 tho right?
<makefu> yes
<hexa-> makefu: if aarch64 were first class there would be a jobset to prevent channel bumps when it fails
mahogany has joined #nixos-aarch64
<makefu> fair, however at least hydra actually tries to build it
<hexa-> so it might be first class by definition
<gchristensen> we "sometimes" try to build it: https://hydra.nixos.org/jobset/nixpkgs/nixpkgs-unstable-armv7l but this has been down Some Time, though I've been asked to try to resurrect it by my client
<hexa-> ah right, for lack of proper builders iirc
<hexa-> red[evilred]: what's the CVE?
<hexa-> moving to #nixos-security
<red[evilred]> 2020-6096
<red[evilred]> yup #nixos-security

<red[evilred]> you can snag the two patches from the sources there
<patagonicus> A PR makes it even nicer, I have full nixpkgs checkouts anyway, I have some local patches (coreutils still doesn't build on master AFAIK, but then I was too lazy to file a bug report so far).
<red[evilred]> Well, that patch is against 20.09

<samueldr> makefu: why nixos on arm, rather than https://mobile.nixos.org/ for phones?
<red[evilred]> No, but it is in 2.32
<red[evilred]> how did I not know that mobile existed
<red[evilred]> ohh, toytime!
zupo has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<makefu> samueldr: i just wanted to give some hints in case DavHau[m] gets stuck.
<samueldr> no worries, it felt odd though to not even see it mentioned, since the pinephone is supported (for what supported currently means)
<samueldr> oooh
<samueldr> I just re-read their message and I get that they knew about Mobile NixOS' doc
<samueldr> carry on
<samueldr> and yeah, the pinephone after all _is_ just a fancy Allwinner device, so I expect it's entirely plausible to ignore Mobile NixOS and go directly to the aarch64 sd image and start from there
<samueldr> though you'd lose (1) the fancy boot with generation selection (2) already solved abstractions
<{^_^}> #104679 (by FRidh, 2 hours ago, open): release.nix: remove aarch64 as blocker, fixes #104550
<hexa-> in case people missed it
<DavHau[m]> Thanks for your hints guys. Will try nixos-mobile soon. BTW, WIFI and Bluetooth is not broken in Manjaro, as I claimed before. I needed to remove the plastic foil between battery and case. That also resolved the non-charging battery issue, lol :D
<samueldr> ah, the "how could this even work" situation with power and the pinephone
<samueldr> don't expect anything close to as "ready to use" as manjaro or other distros are currently
<samueldr> it's not at all ready for use
<DavHau[m]> Can i do calls with nixos-mobile?
<samueldr> (it's the other way around ;), Mobile NixOS)
<samueldr> maybe
<samueldr> I couldn't verify
<samueldr> it's in my tasks list to check soon~ish
<samueldr> I have to get a plan with calls and texting first
<DavHau[m]> :D
<DavHau[m]> Sounds great. I'm not expecting anything. Just playing around a little bit.
<samueldr> at some point it surely will be usable, but the way I've been making progress is by building the most solid foundations, and then some, across a wide variety of devices
<samueldr> and it surely paid off, considering they all boot the same way up to the "desktop", using the same rootfs image
<samueldr> (though hardware support varies)
<DavHau[m]> Alright. A solid foundation surely is an important thing for such projects.
<DavHau[m]> Will it be feasible to install android apps at some point? ...Theoretically?
<samueldr> not with Mobile NixOS
<samueldr> no plan for it
<samueldr> since that's where NixOS comes in
<samueldr> and already kinda does support it with anbox
<samueldr> the anbox package might need some attention for aarch64-linux, but that's nothing specific to Mobile NixOS :)
