<andi-> There are a bunch of drivers in the staging area of the kernel that I am using... One of them is the media decoding via v4l2 on the rk3399. Right now I am building the kernel myself but I wonder if we should just opt in to building the staging (media) modules by default?

<patagonicus> I think someone asked that recently, but what are the current known problems for mobile-nixos on a pinephone?
<cirno-999> no docs ^^
<cirno-999> nixos-inherited ;)
<patagonicus> Well, I've managed to get Nixos running on the Odroid HC2s and that wasn't documented. That's what this channel is for, right? :D

<samueldr> andi-: probably yes
<samueldr> andi-: I'm sure it's similar for many mainline-supported subsystems for aarch64
<samueldr> patagonicus: aarch64, should be relatively easy to get going, might even have a known third party kernel to run on it, the nintendo switch one
<samueldr> patagonicus: I'm unclear though about its boot chain
<samueldr> it started as a chromeos device, so I've heard before that it runs coreboot
<samueldr> it's unclear whether it's a user-controlled coreboot or just an implementation detail for the android bootloader
<andi-> samueldr: what I am a bit scared off is having people load "unstable" drivers by default then.. I guess on aarch64 that might be fine. Opinions?
<samueldr> hmm
<samueldr> can we build them out of tree?
<samueldr> for the staging area drivers
<samueldr> and add a secondary package
<samueldr> (but you might also end up needing drivers that are not in staging)
<samueldr> (that maybe are not enabled)
<samueldr> eww, Pixel Cs on ebay are e x p e n s i v e
<samueldr> (compared to other devices I've gotten)
<samueldr> this really screams HELP ME, I'M A CHROMEOS DEVICE https://github.com/pixelc-linux/documentation#root-fs-setup-on-the-device
<samueldr> booting an Image.fit, instead of a classic boot.img
<samueldr> >> Persistent flashing only works with signed images.
<samueldr> definitely needs some work with Mobile NixOS then
<samueldr> looking at their scripts, it is a normal android boot.img though
<samueldr> wow is this thing wild
<samueldr> so yeah, it looks like it would be not that hard to add the required quirks
<samueldr> though some stuff isn't great apparently https://github.com/pixelc-linux/documentation#hardware-support-status

<patagonicus> Yeah, if it weren't for that section I'd at least try booting Arch on mine tomorrow. (I'm pretty sure it doesn't support DP over USB-C at all, so that's not a Linux thing, but the rest is pretty bad)
<patagonicus> But I also don't really use it much anymore, so if you want me to try booting mobile-nixos I'm happy to try things. Just don't have a lot of time until ~mid December.
