for me, IRC is an async medium. i read highlights when i think it is the right time to do. This is my spare time nonetheless ;)

In theory it is the same for me, in practice I got used to near instant responses from many people so I try to at least look at highlights

I am using matrix bridge for irc. I also use matrix to get notified about outages of some services so I tend to check what highlighted me
