linuxmint/cjs#69 (by jbicha, 1 year ago, closed): Port cjs to mozjs60

__red__: I don't think there's anything pending. I can look it over again tomorrow 👍️
<__red__>
Thanks - no rush. I have many Gig currently streaming to tape so it's not like I can nixos-reload for a while
<__red__>
:-)
<__red__>
man, not being able to proceed because you have to have stuff backported because two pieces of software have different version requirements on a dependency?
<__red__>
if only there were a package manager, or linux distribution that would let you set a different version for dependancy for each of those packages so they could just coexist?

worldofpeace what kind of reasoning is that “Debian is crap so we will not support newer version of our dependencies”
<drakonis>
jtojnar: the same kind of reasoning that thinks debian stable is the one true debian
<drakonis>
an excuse for only checking in and updating every 2 to 6 years
<jtojnar>
🤮️
<drakonis>
met some folks that develop using node that aren't pleased at debian for shipping the ancient lts version
<qyliss>
I get really confused by the attitude of hating Debian for doing what Debian is designed to do
<qyliss>
If you want up to date versionshy not just use another distribution?
<drakonis>
to be fair, its some of the really weird packaging practices
<qyliss>
*versions, why
<jtojnar>
it is dragging us all down to the past 😱️
<drakonis>
if i run debian testing or unstable, i'd at least expect to not have so much friction with getting fresher packages
<drakonis>
stable is fine-ish
<drakonis>
debian experimental has the absolute new lts releases of things
<drakonis>
which is kind of baffling, really.
<drakonis>
debian unstable has the previous lts
<qyliss>
RHEL/CentOS is dragging us to the past
<qyliss>
Debian is middle ground by comparison
<qyliss>
drakonis: that makes sense to me. They're never going to ship non-LTS versions, so why bother?
<drakonis>
its kinda bad for fast moving languages but eh
<drakonis>
the annoying thing is ubuntu is based on debian
<drakonis>
and its lts releases last longer than debian's
<drakonis>
it makes debian's choices far more painful than necessary because they propagate to ubuntu for nearly a decade
<drakonis>
not to mention canonical's own choices
<drakonis>
ubuntu 20.04 will be supported until 2030
<drakonis>
boo.
<drakonis>
also bad debian things is that all of a sudden, important packages will suddenly stop being updated or be subject to strange chains of events
<drakonis>
but that's perhaps not unique to it

Jan Tojnar: the most dissonant reasoning when it comes to having to port that software to other distributions
<worldofpeace>
I'm not sure how cinnamon can be distro agnostic. Might have to see how Fedora copes with it as an official spin.
<jtojnar>
I would just add meta.knowVulnerabilities to spidermonkey 60 and try to port everything to latest (non-ESR)
<jtojnar>
these LTS releases are just vulnerability traps

i don't really like adding new top level attribute sets like "console", but not sure a different one fits it better
<rnhmjoj>
gchristensen: if you propose something better i'll happily move the attributes. however i didn't find any existing top-level attribute suitable
