New laptop, new partition scheme time... last time I spent like 2 hours with a brand new laptop unable to decide how to partition it
<drakonis>
oho
<drakonis>
i almost forgot, today's the nix papercuts hackathon
<infinisil>
colemickens: ZFS ftw!

samueldr: the latest cosmo update is exciting 👀
<samueldr>
link?
<ashkitten>
dont know how to get a link to that special article, but it's on the indiegogo page
<ashkitten>
specific*
<ashkitten>
basically talking about how you can partition and install custom oses from the phone itself in recovery mode
<samueldr>
ashkitten: part 1 or 2 ?
<ashkitten>
part 2
<samueldr>
I thought their previous one also did that
<ashkitten>
apparently it required a computer to flash things
<samueldr>
ah, no, right, it was through a tool that ran on the computer
<samueldr>
yeah
<ashkitten>
this is very exciting
<ashkitten>
i guess we'll be able to make mobile nixos images and just drop them on the sdcard to install
<samueldr>
interesting, looks like Mobile NixOS should integrate quite well with their scheme
<ashkitten>
exactly!
<samueldr>
>> The boot menu is integrated in the modified LK firmware.
<samueldr>
side-note, they use firmware, but it's 99.99% likely stored on the (only) internal storage
<samueldr>
so it's not like you can erase it and continue booting
<ashkitten>
hmm
<samueldr>
like all android devices :)
<samueldr>
well, not all for LK
<samueldr>
as those more recent from qualcomm dropped LK
<samueldr>
it's now using an EFI-based "ABL"
<ashkitten>
is it still safe from bricking if you have a computer to flash it from?
<samueldr>
depends
<samueldr>
since it's MTK, it's likely safe
<samueldr>
but I don't know for sure
<ashkitten>
gotcha
<samueldr>
all qualcomm devices technically can be recovered that way too
<samueldr>
but qualcomm's methods require a signed program to be uploaded
<ashkitten>
ahh
<samueldr>
and more often than not the signed program is not available
<ashkitten>
i hope they release the bootloader firmware, but otherwise we can definitely dump it from the device
<samueldr>
if you want search terms to further your knowledge, "EDL" and "firehose" for qualcomm are good search terms
<samueldr>
(don't know for mediatek though)
<samueldr>
if they have factory images available, it's also likely already available
<ashkitten>
ahh sure
<ashkitten>
ugh. i emailed indiegogo about my server being blocked from accessing their website. november 27 "we are looking into this and will update you once we have more information"
<ashkitten>
nothing since
<ashkitten>
it's annoying because i can't use their rss feeds from nextcloud

Is conventional wisdom to leave the root pool UNencrypted but choose instead to only encrypt the subpools that I care about like /var and /home and /etc maybe (or maybe /etc is ephemeral as per someone around here's config)?
* colemickens
can correlate a nix user based on their zfs pool name that is used in one of their repos and in a reddit comment, heh
<srhb>
colemickens: If you're going for zfs encryption anyway, I think I'd just encrypt the whole pool and be done with it.

<ivan>
better to encrypt all those world-readable secrets in /nix

Worst part about the bird in my apartment yesterday was, that my friend wanted to play some "epic music" to get ready to catch the bird. But instead of playing it in the room we were in, she started playing epic music for the bird... Uncool ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBxLgW9lE64 )
<eyJhb>
*someone might appreciate that mental image
<__monty__>
You city folk and your relation to animals is weird.
<eyJhb>
__monty__: eh, normally I don't really care tbh. :p And it wasn't really that bad
<eyJhb>
Just a little fun she thought of
<eyJhb>
Hoped it would fly out itself, so that I didn't have to catch it and stress it even more :(
<zimbatm>
yorick: mostly a plan to rewrite the nix installer
<zimbatm>
realistically it was a bit too short to produce anything meaningful
<yorick>
zimbatm: that thing that doesn't work if you're root?
<zimbatm>
yeah that thing
<zimbatm>
it has many many other issues
Taneb has joined #nixos-chat
<zimbatm>
for example if the installer is interrupted mid-way, it blocks the installer for re-running
<zimbatm>
and the user has to clean all the things by hand
<zimbatm>
there is no uninstaller
<zimbatm>
it depends on xz which isn't available by default on all systems
<zimbatm>
it's a big pile of bash code

<gchristensen>
I know a few colleagues have been working hard on crate2nix
<Church->
Man I really need to find my old weechat config
<Church->
It was perfect. Sigh.
<gchristensen>
what was different about it? I find weechat to be like 95% perfect out of th ebox
<Church->
gchristensen: Eh just minimal and in a way I liked. Nick size was down, couple status bars were hidden or configured in a way I liked, same with time format, highmon setup, etc
<Church->
Was my perfect setup
<Church->
Just on an old laptop somewhere that I suspect to be at my storage unit
<Church->
Where I think all my old tech stuff if I hope
<gchristensen>
ah
<Church->
Otherwise I hope I still have my irc logs. Can probably find it there where I walked through setting it up. heh
