<ryantrinkle> does anyone know how good the supprot for the xiaomi redmi note 8 (begonia) is?
<ryantrinkle> it seems to have the best camera of any of the phones listed on https://mobile.nixos.org/devices/index.html
<samueldr> ryantrinkle: none of the android devices have had any work in figuring out the steps to get the cameras working, by myself, yet
<ryantrinkle> ah ok cool
<samueldr> and uh... I wouldn't suggest the redmi note 8 (xiaomi-begonia) ever because of its high brick chances
<{^_^}> mobile-nixos#171 (by samueldr, 40 weeks ago, merged): device: add xiaomi-begonia
<ryantrinkle> haha yeah i just read that ^
<ryantrinkle> does not look good
<samueldr> (though I guess the recent bootrom exploits on MTK hardware should fix that)
<samueldr> for the time being, there are no devices other than the pinephone that are expected to have "full hardware support" in the close future
<samueldr> but I'll be working on figuring out some of the hardware on some android phones later down the road
<ryantrinkle> hmm, ok
<ryantrinkle> how usable is the pinephone these days?
<samueldr> on NixOS, less than on other distros
<samueldr> (but not by much)
<samueldr> on other distros, some people say it's possible to daily drive it
monk has left #nixos-aarch64 ["Error from remote client"]
<ryantrinkle> voice, text, and a web browser would be enough for me to give it a solid try
<ryantrinkle> is that in the realm of possibility?
<samueldr> voice calls / sms are yet untested by myself, but it's probably working since network over LTE worked
<samueldr> (I don't have a voice/sms plan)
<samueldr> so yeah, realm of possibility
<ryantrinkle> ah ok
<samueldr> I don't think it's a bad device, but it's not a "good" device either
<ryantrinkle> there were also things about routing the audio to the modem
<ryantrinkle> which people were messing with in other distros
<samueldr> yeah
<samueldr> that's one of the issues, but nothing specific to my work :)
<samueldr> it's also about *improving* all that
<ryantrinkle> right
<samueldr> it's also a good enough device because it will be one with the most community work
<ryantrinkle> yeah, i don't really care much about it being powerful
<ryantrinkle> it'd be nice if the camera were better, but i can live with it
<samueldr> it's also pretty safe to mess around with
<samueldr> software-wise
<ryantrinkle> right!
<ryantrinkle> tbqh that is my main issue with android
<samueldr> even the modem is pretty safe to mess around software-wise
<samueldr> so there's been some work to liberate it more
<samueldr> reduce the amount of blobbiness
<ryantrinkle> i'm here because my oneplus 7 pro with lineageos can't connect to mobile data anymore
<ryantrinkle> and i know that if i try to fix it
<samueldr> :/
<ryantrinkle> there's a very good chance i'll break it completely
<ryantrinkle> and i also know that restoring an android device from backup is a nightmare
<ryantrinkle> (and not to mention incomplete)
<samueldr> ah, "breakt it completely" but not actually :)
<samueldr> just hose your own setup :)
<ryantrinkle> right
<ryantrinkle> all my other machines are nixos with configurations for system and home in git
<samueldr> because when I'm thinking safe to mess with, I'm thinking stuff like you can erase its storage and it'll still work
<samueldr> if you were to dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/... on android you messed up bad
<ryantrinkle> right!
<ryantrinkle> i did that once :P
<samueldr> some OEMs you can recover... not all
<ryantrinkle> it didn't even occur to me that that would be such a big deal
<samueldr> it's terrible that it has to be a big deal
<ryantrinkle> i hope at some point they make a pinephone plus :P
<ryantrinkle> i'd be happy to pay way, way more
<samueldr> let's hope they figure out a good next step
<samueldr> there's not many SoCs that are applicable here sadly
<samueldr> being in that position I'd get in touch with either MTK or Qualcomm and see if anything can be done
<samueldr> but really that's a tall order
<samueldr> MTK have terrible software (ports)
<samueldr> qualcomm is better... but built on old stuff generally
<samueldr> and leaving all of that to the community is rude
<samueldr> the main reason the pinephone was able to get up to speed quickly is that the A64 already had pretty amazing support in u-boot and linux mainline
<ryantrinkle> right, that definitely makes sense

<ryantrinkle> samueldr: well, i'm gonna try mobian on pinephone and see how much i can use it for
<ryantrinkle> i might end up carrying two phones all the time for a while :P

<drag0nius> hello, i've noticed this page about NixOS on rpi4 https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_on_ARM/Raspberry_Pi_4 , i don't think this was here when i last checked (around october), is it the supported way to install nixos on rpi4 or should i still stick to the https://github.com/Robertof/nixos-docker-sd-image-builder ?
