<colemickens> it's a bit worse than not great, imo. I'm having a much better time tethering through my phone, both through wifi and usb. And can still get to my local devices.
<samueldr> yeah, I was definitely using that euphemistically
<samueldr> IIRC there's been a user working on a board that would break-out NVME in some way allowing wi-fi card + storage
<samueldr> I don't know what's the status, and if it even still is a thing
<samueldr> I might have been wrong about the storage
<samueldr> or it was a plan
<samueldr> colemickens: is bluetooth enabled too? might be problematic with the setup
<colemickens> yes. I'll try disabling and see if it helps!
<samueldr> not sure when it's not actively used if it matters
<samueldr> hopefully the A/E adapter gets in a usable state soon
zupo has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<colemickens> ah, luckily the sysreq messages in dmesg made me remember that my headphone jack is configured for uart (on my pinebook pro)
<das_j> Hm, what are the files I need for the firmware upgrade? recovery.bin and pieeprom.{bin, sig} are required, but is there more? I added start4.elf but now my pi just hangs on boot :/
<das_j> (rpi4)
monk has left #nixos-aarch64 ["Error from remote client"]
<clever> das_j: if you use pieeprom.bin, it will attempt to flash on every boot, and wont stop until you delete the update files (recovery.bin and pieeprom.{bin, sig})
<clever> das_j: if you rename it to pieeprom.upd, it will be treated as an update, and recovery.bin will rename itself, breaking the update cycle, and then it boots again
<das_j> I thought so, but it just doesn't
<clever> das_j: start4.elf and fixup4.dat are also a matched pair and must come from the same version or you break things
<das_j> It just starts, and tells me it cannot find config.txt, recover4.elf, recovery.elf, start4.elf, start.elf and the Firmware
<das_j> then it hangs
<clever> screenshot?
<das_j> excuse my camery quality
<das_j> *camera
<das_j> do you also want the sd image?
monk has joined #nixos-aarch64
<clever> das_j: the order field is 1, which means it will only try to boot from sd, no usb/net
<das_j> yeah, I flashed the image to an sd card
<clever> your partition table only contains a fat32 and nothing else, thats fishy, where is the rootfs?
<das_j> it's not there. the image is JUST for updating the pi
<clever> ah, its already updated then
<clever> try the other sd card again?
<das_j> sorry I might have been unclear about my process. there is no other sd card. I just have this one which is supposed to update the pi and switch it to network boot. It will be used to bootstrap ~60 pis which will be booted over the network
<das_j> So what I'm currently building is a minimal update card which should update to firmware 2020-09-03
<clever> ahhh
<clever> ok, that makes more sense then
<clever> how did you modify pieeprom.bin to make it netboot?
<das_j> I hope the pasting works
<clever> matrix has a builtin pastebin system
<das_j> I also tried the other way around with boot_orig on top of the other stuff
<das_j> did the pastebin system work?
<clever> first thing to note, there is a date at the top of the screenshot
<clever> april 16th, 2020
<clever> that doesnt sound like 2020-09-03
<das_j> yep, that's what I thought
<clever> next tip, add a config.txt with uart_2ndstage=1, and recovery.bin will print its own debug
<clever> then you can detect why its not flashing
<das_j> well I will first have to get a second pi
<clever> what does blkid say about the partition on the card?
<das_j> /dev/sdg1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL_FATBOOT="2020-09-03" LABEL="2020-09-03" UUID="2178-694F" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="2178694f-01"
<clever> and when you boot the card, do you get the hdmi diagnostics screen, or a hang?
<das_j> the diagnostics screen I just sent you
<clever> then its not even reading the card
<clever> the type code 0xb might not be right
<clever> use fdisk to change the type to 0xc
<das_j> still the same issue
<clever> if you mount sdg1, and ls it, what files are present, how big is the sdg1 partition?
<das_j> it does to different things (hang) when I add a start4.elf so I assume it can find the partition
<clever> start4.elf is only needed to boot linux, not used during flashing
<das_j> pieeprom.bin pieeprom.sig recovery.bin
<das_j> 7.8M
<clever> my guess is that its the wrong fat type
<clever> try a different mkfs.fat?
<das_j> hmm I stole that one from nixos, but I can try
<das_j> it's faketime "1970-01-01 00:00:00" mkfs.vfat -i ${partid} -n ${version} firmware_part.img
<das_j> wait
<das_j> does the partition need to be called FIRMWARE?
<clever> nope
<clever> it just needs to be the first fat32 on the partition table
<clever> thats all the firmware cares about
<das_j> faketime "1970-01-01 00:00:00" mkfs.vfat -i ${config.sdImage.firmwarePartitionID} -n ${config.sdImage.firmwarePartitionName} firmware_part.img
<das_j> looks like this is exactly what nixos does
<clever> and its then wrapped in a partition table?
<das_j> yes
* clever digs
<das_j> maybe the table is bogus?
<das_j> this is the image I use
<clever> Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
<clever> rpi-fwupd-2020-09-03.img1 16384 17983 1600 800K b W95 FAT32
<clever> the partition is only 800kb in size
<clever> hmmm, but that is accurate to the fs with
<clever> try again with 32mb maybe?
<das_j> WHAT
<das_j> that works
<clever> if you use a smaller fs, it stops being fat32
<clever> because 32bits is overkill
<clever> you have to force mkfs.vfat to make the FAT table the same shape
* clever looks
<clever> [nix-shell:~]# minfo -i /dev/loop0p1
<clever> mformat command line: mformat -T 1600 -h 64 -s 32 -H 0 -i "/dev/loop0p1" ::
<clever> disk type="FAT12 "
<clever> das_j: yep, thats fat12, not fat32
<das_j> >
<das_j> FAT32 requires a partion of atleast 33,548,800 bytes (32763 KB).
<das_j> oh
<clever> since you want to netboot, pieeprom.bin is also better
<clever> the card will freeze (and blink green rapidly) when done
<clever> and the card wont self-destruct, so you can reuse it immediately on another pi
<clever> $ ls ~/tftp/d328cdce/
<clever> backup bricker config.txt pieeprom.sig pieeprom.upd start4.elf
<clever> das_j: also, if the .upd and .sig can be found over tftp, the eeprom will reflash itself on bootup
<das_j> "bricker"
<clever> that would be 512kb of null bytes
<clever> so the eeprom just erases itself
<clever> once erased, i can flash the pi from chrome, lol
<das_j> thank you so much, clever!
<das_j> clever++
<{^_^}> clever's karma got increased to 522
<das_j> it works like a charm now
