<gchristensen> LnL: I think RosaCtrl could help you with the errors and documentation around the installation issue, she was offering to write a guide on how to do it as-is today, and I thought maybe she could skip a lot of that and start from where you are now
<RosaCtrl> Hi!
<LnL> that would be great!
<RosaCtrl> I though it would be nice to have a guide detailing the different ways to install Nix manually on Catalina
<RosaCtrl> My knowledge on the issue though is limited to what was explained in the GitHub issue. I don't know if there are other ways to do it
<plumm> Is it not just
<plumm> 1. create apfs volume, vim /etc/synthetic.conf and then vifs the apfs uuid?
<RosaCtrl> From top of my head I remember two ways: one using an encrypted volume and another using a symlink. Both have shortcomings. I remember a third one that allowed to decrypt the volume before the user logs in
<LnL> RosaCtrl: ok so firstly, I tried to braindump the situation and my opinion a bit here https://logs.nix.samueldr.com/nix-darwin/2020-05-06#3422334;
<LnL> if you're adversed to docbook, I'm happy to build an updated version of those and do the translation of the edits
<RosaCtrl> Nah, I can do it. I'll read the log of the channel. The PR looks like what I have in mind
<gchristensen> thank you a lot RosaCtrl, LnL :D
<RosaCtrl> I'll look at this during the weekend. I'm still on my working hours here 😅

<abathur> RosaCtrl LnL I've picked at part of this a little this week, but it's been a busy week and I haven't had many spare neurons to rub together; I'll try to make sure I've got mine at least posted/shared somewhere even if I don't think it's complete
<abathur> I've mostly been trying to focus on proposing a golden path (though I've also done some reorg and line edits elsewhere)--so there might not be much direct overlap between my edits and a broader guide

<abathur> nice
<abathur> nix + nix-darwin ate my primary use-case for Vagrant :P
<LnL> hehe
<abathur> and I was quite glad, not that I have any beef with vagrant

<LnL> by the way I had a thought for nix-darwin
<LnL> what if etc files where managed like patches (especially for existing stuff) instead of fully overwriting files
