<srhb>
I'm confused on how to handle the backport of this: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/43811 -- It seems to me that 172 ought to be removed entirely from the 18.03 release if we follow the release notes from Oracle. Should we just dump the psu version or set them both to the same version?

<domenkozar>
so the situation about fixing macos haskell builds is completely uncertain now
<domenkozar>
we have about 5 different paths
<domenkozar>
peti: it's not entirely clear to me what you wish to do now
<domenkozar>
who decides? :)
<domenkozar>
I'm not willing to put more work into this, as it seems all solutions are considered non-ideal
<domenkozar>
and I've already put a few days in
<domenkozar>
but I am willing to help, if we have a final decision
<{^_^}>
#43713 (by angerman, open): Feature/no more haskell libs
<Dezgeg>
still this duplicate -L thing needs fixing as apparently it's already being worked around in some other packages (inkscape)
<Profpatsch>
timokau[m]: Testing! \o/
<peti>
domenkozar: I expressed my preferred solution a couple of times (not putting Haskell packages into buildInputs), but I can't (and don't want to) implement that all by myself. My preception is that ideally the people who caused this situation would, like, help fix it, but it looks to me like they are off, all walking into different directions experimenting with 3 different types of hacks that mitigate the
<peti>
issue but don't really solve it.
<peti>
domenkozar: Having said that, I realize that I don't understand this new and improved x-compilation code well enough to feel really comfortable saying, well, I am right and all you are wrong. Chances are the solution I think is best actually isn't? I just don'#t know.
<peti>
domenkozar: So I reckon that the time has come to leave decisions about the generic Haskell builder to people who know it better than I do these days.
<Profpatsch>
timokau[m]: I haven’t yet read the whole discussion on Github, but I might have a bit of input.
<domenkozar>
peti: that's fair, but who decides now? :)
<peti>
Not me. :-)
<peti>
It looks to me like Matthew, angerman, and ericson have to figure that out among themselves since they are the most active in that area.
<LnL>
domenkozar: peti: I feel like skipping lib might be the best solution since that will probably introduce less problems that strictDeps
<LnL>
introducing strictDeps, while I don't think it's a bad idea, is more controversial and might confuse people since it makes the stdenv behave differently
* peti
doesn't know. Skipping "lib" might work fine. Or it might cause file collisions and run-time errors because the linker can find its SOs anymore. I can't say.
<LnL>
but regardless I'd still like to understand why dependencies end up 6x in the arguments instead of twice
<LnL>
well yeah, assuming it works properly :)

<Profpatsch>
LnL: 6x sounds like a multipication somewheer.
<Profpatsch>
3x2
<LnL>
yeah, that's certainly possible
<ckauhaus>
thoughtpolice: is it feasible to backport the psql updates at least partly to 17.09 as well?
