iqubic: Combining org-mode with ledger is supposedly great
<iqubic>
I don't know what ledger is. I think it's something to do with finance.
<Myhlamaeus>
It's like GNUCash
<iqubic>
I don't know what that is either.
<Myhlamaeus>
Is the spreadsheet thing the "built-in table editor"?
<Myhlamaeus>
ledger is an accounting program
<iqubic>
Myhlamaeus: Yes. That's what I'm referring to.
<Myhlamaeus>
I've lately been looking into pass/gopass
<iqubic>
But org-mode gives you the ability to do cool things.
<iqubic>
Like you can write a function in some arbitrary programming language X (org supports many) and then have some of the fields of your spreadsheet be defined in terms of that function.
<iqubic>
Like you can say, the third column in each row is equal to function FOO called with the first and second column numbers as inputs.
<Myhlamaeus>
That sounds almost like literate programming
<Myhlamaeus>
Oh, that actually sounds like Excel/Calc again
<iqubic>
Yeah.
<iqubic>
You can do literate programming in Org-Mode really easily.
<iqubic>
If you want to look into that I recommend reading up on org-babel.
<Myhlamaeus>
It's really easy to go down the rabbit hole on Linux, huh?
<iqubic>
Yes. Yes it is.
<iqubic>
But the crazy thing is that this is all just Org-Mode.
<iqubic>
The built in emacs calculator has just as many awesome features too.
<Myhlamaeus>
...
<Myhlamaeus>
Gotta try embedding some LaTeX in my org files
<iqubic>
Yeah. That's an awesome thing to do.
<Myhlamaeus>
I've seen that there's a "TeX input mode" in emacs through which one can eg input `\lambda` to insert the lambda symbol
<Myhlamaeus>
I've simultaneously found the same page
<Myhlamaeus>
Why have I ever even used something other than emacs?
<iqubic>
I don't know.
<iqubic>
I basically live in Emacs nowadays. I use EXWM as my window manager.
<iqubic>
Which is basically fullscreen emacs + X Windows turn into Emacs Buffers.
<Myhlamaeus>
I'm somewhat reluctant to switch away from Xmonad after I've finally set it up...
<iqubic>
You don't need to switch.
<iqubic>
But you should.
<Myhlamaeus>
No, I absolutely do need to switch
<iqubic>
Why?
<Myhlamaeus>
Because emacs
<iqubic>
Ah. I see.
<Myhlamaeus>
I see no reason *not* to live in emacs
<iqubic>
Well, having a single threaded WM is sometimes not fun.
<iqubic>
Emacs currently has no support for Threads.
<Myhlamaeus>
Well, home-manager makes switching back quite easy
<iqubic>
Like if you start a long running computation in Emacs, and don't have a way to stop it, then your whole WM is blocked.
<iqubic>
But fortunately I've only had that happen a total of twice to me in the year or so I've been on EXWM.
<Myhlamaeus>
I'd guess that one could also kill the process from a different VT
<iqubic>
Yeah.
<iqubic>
But this sort of thing is rather rare.

Is there some better version of the GitHub Issue and PR view? I would like to have pinned searches much like folders in a Mail client that show unread PRs/Mails.

It's really uninformed and just tries to put Nix down
<Taneb>
A prompt for a counterpost?

They seem to put it down without explanations really

If I had a blog maybe :P

The only valid point imo is documentation, but everybody knew that already

And the cloud support thing I guess

Looking for suggestions for DNS providers that aren't going to hose me
<joepie91>
colemickens: what went wrong previously at what provider?
<colemickens>
I had free credit somewhere that I no longer want to do business. I had previously used CloudFlare which doesn't seem to be a company I want to support either.
<colemickens>
GoDaddy and others are bad because they transfer domains when they shouldn't, or have knee jerk reactions to LEA
<joepie91>
colemickens: I can't speak for how they handle LEA, but I've been hosting my DNS at dns.he.net for years now, and aside from falling over for a day every few years or so, it's perfectly reliable
<joepie91>
and they're an ethically-behaving company by most people's standards :)
<joepie91>
(my only minor gripe would be their habit of quoting different prices to different customers, but them being B2B that's probably excusable)
<joepie91>
(and doesn't affect their DNS service)
<joepie91>
note that they -only- do DNS, they don't do domain registration
<joepie91>
I have my domains at internetbs.net, which I can't say I have any complaints about, and at least in the past they've been rather un-social-engineerable
<joepie91>
basically telling some would-be hijackers to piss off unless they can present an ID scan, though in more polite wording

<manveru>
since... 2010 or so, been pretty solid so far, and they stick to the awesome 90s design :)
<ldlework>
hehe
<ldlework>
i use gandi.net but i don't remember why and just login to renew every year or so
<manveru>
i use gandi for .at/.de domains
<manveru>
but they keep updating shit and redesigning their UI every year or so :|
<manveru>
OTOH there's a terraform provider for it now, so i don't have to care much anymore
<manveru>
damn, elixir really screwed me over :(
<manveru>
thought i had the perfect solution for doing yarn2nix style nix-shells from the mix.lock file...
<manveru>
but turns out that indirect optional dependencies become required ones if you compile them on their own, and they're not mentioned in the mix.lock, which means i don't have a hash for them :'(

manveru: the ui changes do seem to be improvements though
<ldlework>
not a bad thing for a registar ime
<manveru>
the usability during the transition was painful
<manveru>
i agree it's much faster and easier now that they're fully on react
<joepie91>
vokoscreen++
<joepie91>
only one bug I ran into, it silently fails to save if you store the video in a non-existent folder
<joepie91>
otherwise it works perfectly
<manveru>
oh, i think i found the issue... all those env vars set in the buildMix derivations aren't recognized by elixir anymore :P
<colemickens>
gandi is my registrar and I'm okay with them. I still remember the old UI and it was more functional, imo. Worked more in line with my expectations about the web/state/opening stuff in new tabs/etc.
<colemickens>
NFS is perfect, somehow everytime I remember them I'm surprised they're still around. :)
