#17126 (by grahamc, 2 years ago, open): Unfree software is unintuitively hidden for new users
<LnL>
it's very opinionated but not an entirely unreasonable statement if we didn't have a manpage for options
<joepie91>
LnL: the same problem existed with coretemp and their previous aliases; the points they made were not necessarily /invalid/, they were just presented in an unreasonably hostile and aggressive manner
<LnL>
but we do so I wouldn't make this a bigger deal out of this than necessary
<gchristensen>
+1
<gchristensen>
no need to panic
<qyliss^work>
Pretty suspicious that the activity on this account started right after coretemp got banned...
<gchristensen>
it started about 10d earlier, surprisingly
<gchristensen>
but an awweful long time to be silent
<qyliss^work>
right, but only picked up in January
<gchristensen>
true

it looks like he is a bit obsessed with editing posts..

hot dog sakura suffers a lot of segfaults
<infinisil>
Oh god, last night I spent like 3 hours trying to debug a problem, at like 3am
<infinisil>
After having slept it now took me like 15 minutes to find the cause..
<infinisil>
It's amazing how unproductive you can be when tired
<__monty__>
I turn into a help vampire when sleepy.
<__monty__>
(Don't tell clever though, admitting this is only the first step towards recovery ; )

lol
<joepie91>
infinisil: more importantly, how much you can not realize that you're being unproductive :P
<ottidmes>
also, your subconsciousness probably has been busy helping you solve it so fast after waking
<infinisil>
joepie91: I was so convinced it was just that hard of a problem!
<infinisil>
Btw the problem was that `export NIX_PATH="nixpkgs=..."; sudo some-nix-command` does indeed not make it use that NIX_PATH for the nix command
<infinisil>
sudo clears the env
<infinisil>
And `sudo NIX_PATH="nixpkgs=..." some-nix-command` doesn't work either (because maybe something related with PAM). You can use sudo -E, but that propagates *all* env vars. What I ended up doing was `sudo some-nix-command -I nixpkgs=...`

<__monty__>
Wouldn't sudo env NIX_PATH=... command also work?

Ohh didn't know about that
<infinisil>
Yeah that seems to work

Has anyone looked at mgmt config? FRP for configuration management sounds interesting.
<andi->
It is a nice idea. Being compatible with puppet seemed like a good thing back then but these says I am not so sure.
<__monty__>
That's a goal?
<clever>
infinisil: sudo -i gets you a root shell, then you can just act like sudo isnt in play
<infinisil>
clever: I don't wanna run all the commands as root though, only a single one
<clever>
infinisil: sudo bash -c "foo=bar nix-build" might work
<infinisil>
Ah yeah
<__monty__>
Heh, just ran into a JChristensen.
<gchristensen>
us Christensens are everywhere!
