ah, but i guess hm doesn't pin any software versions, so the version updates i'm seeing must be coming from somewhere else

asymmetric: Well, if you have `programs.home-manager.path = fetchTarball "…"` then you'll end up frequently downloading stuff. If you use a regular channel the downloads should only happen after you've done a `nix-channel --update`.

pie_[bnc]: HM assumes that the system provides a valid PATH when you login. In NixOS it is provided, e.g., through PAM.
