<judson> I just did a somewhat-delayed NixOS update. I'm getting an error when I try to home-manager switch:
<judson> error: file 'home-manager/home-manager/home-manager.nix' was not found in the Nix search path (add it using $NIX_PATH or -I)

<matt`> hello, i'm having trouble getting home-manager installed. i'm getting error: opening lock file '/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/profile.lock': Permission denied. my user is an allowed user
<matt`> this is from running: nix-shell '<home-manager>' -A install
<romanofski> matt`: is this on NixOS or some other distro
<matt`> nixos
<romanofski> oh hang on... you install it as the user root?
<matt`> no i'm trying to install it as a normal user. i originally did install it accidentally as root then uninstalled it
<romanofski> hm... I would try to figure out why it still accesses the root profile
<romanofski> not using sudo or anything?
<matt`> correct
<romanofski> yeah that is odd
<romanofski> if there is nothing which tells you what is happening... strace might help
<romanofski> although .. I thought there was a '--trace' option
<matt`> is there a chance it's a problem with nix_path? i set the system wide value to include my normal user channel when I was first installing this, then removed it
<matt`> i just checked though and my user channel path is not in the root path
<matt`> so it seems fine

<romanofski> matt`: I currently don't have access to a NixOS machine... hm.. so can't really answer
