ixxie: nix buildfarm was renamed to hydra at some point in the past, so i guess NixFarm matches ;) ( https://nixos.org/hydra/manual/#idm140737315986368 ) -- makefu!~makefu@v22017114592354873.luckysrv.de, Sat Nov 25 22:34:09 CET 2017
<ixxie>
fadenb: I would like to make some changes to the menu in the coming days
<fadenb>
ixxie: was just about to write to you :p
<fadenb>
I believe I initially set permissions with a time limit. will assign you the proper rights in a few minutes permanently
<fadenb>
will probably allow it for the whole trustee group
<fadenb>
ixxie: I just assigned the "editinterface" permission to the trustee group. That should allow you to edit thinks in the MediaWiki namespace (including the sidebar)
<makefu>
good morning ixxie
<makefu>
joepie91: this writeup looks good, it would probably fit into a (currently not existing) "hydra troubleshooting" guide
<makefu>
or even installation guide
<joepie91>
makefu: likely; it's probably not a complete set of notes either
<joepie91>
just what I've run into so far
<joepie91>
while setting up
<joepie91>
I'll probably be adding stuff to it over time
<joepie91>
(modifying a gist is much lower-overhead for me than doing battle with mediawiki syntax and oddities :P)
<makefu>
it is something already! i really like a short "this is what you need" installation guide
<makefu>
compared to a full writeup
<makefu>
mediawiki syntax is a bit weird but nothing compared to the docbook syntax of the manual
<ixxie>
thanks fadenb, thats awesome
<joepie91>
makefu: oh yeah, docbook is even worse, but mediawiki syntax already fails the "can I do this quickly without getting distracted" test for me :P
<nixoswikibot>
[[Special:Log/move]] move * Ixxie * moved [[Bookmarks]] to [[Resource Overview]]: parallelism with the Ecosystem menu
<ixxie>
makefu: I am thinking of making a survey of Nix ecosystem users in order to be able to quantify the people in the community
<ixxie>
makefu: it could become a yearly thingy
<makefu>
nice idea, but surely a lot of work :D
<ixxie>
makefu: I think we can get help from globin, he has collected statistics from Github
<ixxie>
makefu: but essentially, its A. select questions, B. make a surveymonkey / google forms survey, C. market on IRC / mailing list / reddit / twitter / etc
<makefu>
and D. pump data into the article
<ixxie>
yeah
<ixxie>
I can do D since I am an analyst after all
<ixxie>
would be cool to have it done by years end, so it could become yearly
<joepie91>
is there any hydra documentation on the wiki yet, btw?
<ixxie>
samueldr: is it because its missing the opening tags of the template?
<ixxie>
samueldr: what do you think of the new menu links to github?
<ixxie>
makefu: are you in?
<ixxie>
btw samueldr - where did you put all the alternative installation methods? I was hoping our installation guide would distinguish itself by a diversity of install methods
<ixxie>
if they are pealed off into seperate articles, I at least wanna see them linked in the main installation guide
<samueldr>
the menu links are good, more likely to make random users aware that some of the work is done in github
<samueldr>
the installation "guide" was, for the most part, a guide on how to make a usb installation media
<samueldr>
all the alternative methods linked, iirc, were for cloud providers
<samueldr>
they have all been migrated to the hosters page
<samueldr>
especially good since they were duplicated there anyway, and some had more up-to-date information
<samueldr>
for generic non-cloud installation guides, we probably should link them back also in the installation guide, somehwere
<ixxie>
okay cool
<ixxie>
samueldr: I reached out to globin about surveys of Nix/* users
<ixxie>
and for help with NixOS release documentation and Nixpkgs documentation
<ixxie>
samueldr: I was thinking perhaps the installation guide for NixOS could simply be a section of the NixOS guide
<ixxie>
samueldr: that way we got a start on one of the skeleton articles
<ixxie>
samueldr: it could include Installation, Configuration, Upgrade, Troubleshooting and Maintanance sections, for example
<samueldr>
hmm, I was thinking that those all should be split on pages, especially the configuration one
<samueldr>
well, I was thinking about a "first time configuration"
<samueldr>
I found it hard to find common configurations
<samueldr>
in a format like "I want to [...]" and an explanation of what it does
<samueldr>
"I want to use kde", or "I want to use gnome with wayland", "I want to use awesome without a DE"
<samueldr>
and the installation guide needs to provide a bunch of informations about bootloaders
<samueldr>
from idling in #nixos, I have the feeling that there should be some explanation on how the ESP, /boot, grub, systemd-boot cooperates
<samueldr>
and that's only for EFI
<samueldr>
notes about legacy boot should be included too
<samueldr>
and then, tricks, like using refind on problematic boards
<samueldr>
I have two different computers from different brands that sometimes lose their bios settings, for different reasons
<ixxie>
hmm
<samueldr>
including the efi configuration
<ixxie>
config examples would go nicely in the NixOS cookbook
<samueldr>
possibly
<samueldr>
in short: the installation guide, from where I've stopped, will grow way bigger
<ixxie>
alright
<samueldr>
simply because it needs to either provide steps or links to steps for common configurations
<samueldr>
like zfs boot
<ixxie>
well the general guide can contain paragraph-summaries of the other guides
<samueldr>
swap: what, why and how
<ixxie>
and thus serve as a map
<samueldr>
all depending on the size, yes
<ixxie>
so the general guide is the ToC for all guides
<ixxie>
samueldr: would you like to 'adopt' the NixOS guide collection?
<samueldr>
I don't know, we'll see if I'm able to string sentences together in a coherent manner
<ixxie>
and thus also the NixOS guide? I am thinking of starting an 'Adopt an Article' program for the wiki
<ixxie>
samueldr: makefu and I will help you with reviews and style corrections
<ixxie>
samueldr: but we need someone to take ownership of the content of particular articles as well I think
<samueldr>
I still feel like a struggle with the writing, but I think part of it was from adapting the existing sections, instead of writing something new
<ixxie>
samueldr: follow your own voice
<ixxie>
samueldr: make sure most of all to structure the whole article the way its clear to you and then fill out content following that idea
<samueldr>
yes, that's the path I'll follow
<ixxie>
awesome
<ixxie>
gnight now
<samueldr>
'night
<ixxie>
gtg before shes angry again xD
ixxie has quit [(Quit: Lost terminal)]
<samueldr>
thankfully, I'm well versed in linux things, like installation and the whole "classic linux" system
<samueldr>
it definitely will help for the installation instructions, as partitionning and such isn't yet too alien in nixos
<makefu>
so much backlog, i will read it tomorrow :)
