<colemickens> looks like now Firefox builds are holding up nixos-unstable. Looks like OOM.
<infinisil> Oh no :(

<jD91mZM2> A branch of rnix just parsed a README file, which is obviously not at all a nix file, and the output was still 100% the original
<jD91mZM2> Lossless errors are on their way!
<jD91mZM2> and the code is actually readable again
<andi-> jD91mZM2: nice!
<andi-> I should totally start reading the code.. Never really got into parsers

<jD91mZM2> andi-: Do yourself a favor and don't look at the code of the master branch
<jD91mZM2> andi-: While it's less efficient currently (but most of the slowness can fortunately be fixed upstream), it uses an ast builder instead of manually constructing an ast
<andi-> I can't dedicate anytime soonish anyway.. I am spending the day in bed already since my brain is a fried due to lack of sleep in the last days :/ Gives you some time to cleanup the mess :p
<jD91mZM2> andi-: Oof, hope you feel better! The mess is being cleaned up on the "rowan" branch, that's the name of the library I'm now using
<andi-> :D

<infinisil> NixOS on HN's frontpage again, wouldn't mind seeing some people chime in to help with potential future comments :) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18363522
<sphalerite> heh, this darch person always plugs that on nixos posts
<sphalerite> >dockerfiles
<sphalerite> >reproducible
<qyliss^work> lmao
<qyliss^work> trying to rebuild that after a few months is going to be a nightmare
<qyliss^work> also on the front page is "nxos.org"... coincidence?
<infinisil> sphalerite: Ugh.. I would downvote if I could
<infinisil> I mean, I guess you need to somehow promote the stuff you wrote, but this just feels cheap
<simpson> For many people, Nix is not transitional, but is an impossible mountaintop.
<simpson> And so they come up with not-even-Nix ideas for distros.

<maurer> TIL from that thread that cachix is free for open source projects
<maurer> Though I'm not 100% on how they're validating it, given that you're just cachix pushing to it, but still
<drakonis> its high profile enough
<maurer> No, I mean how cachix is validating that you're not using it as a closed source project
<maurer> e.g. you could build or distribute encrypted files with it
<drakonis> ah okay
<drakonis> folks would find a way to cheat the detection
<drakonis> see the redditor that stored 1pb of porn on aws
<colemickens> Darch would excite me so much if I didn't know about NixOS. Instead, it just makes me think of LinuxKit and get sad.
<colemickens> Oh god, look a pile of JSON, nope, nope.
<maurer> I mean, there are ways to make it less gameable, but would be more expensive for cachix
<maurer> e.g. gitlab does its "foss only" mode by doing a credential-free clone from github
<maurer> So similarly, you could imagine not only cachix, but a hydra instance, but at that point the compute bill might be a biiiit too high :P
<emily> presumably it works on the assumptino of good faith
<maurer> Yeah, and that'll probably work for now when there aren't a ton of people using nixos
<emily> I expect it'll probably scale for a long time if the procedure is "email blah@cachix.com with a link to your FOSS project"
<drakonis_> cachix plus flakes for a public package index
<drakonis_> how would cachix work if there was a index
<drakonis> rather, how would someone pitch the idea?
