<nature> uh-oh... I did a nixos-rebuild switch on my rpi and it told me that /boot ran out of space...
Darkmatter66 has quit [Quit: ZNC 1.7.5 - https://znc.in]
<simpson> Time to delete old generations, maybe? How many kernels do you have in there? You can keep as many as you like and have space for; I'd aim for at least 2.
<nature> I just installed it...
<nature> it's my first nixos-rebuild after flashing the sd-card

<nature> okok

<nature> I am now quite puzzled, nixos-rebuild switch finbally works
<nature> but each time I reboot it doesn't take any of my changes into account
<samueldr> is the /boot partition mounted properly?
<nature> is it necessary ?
<samueldr> yes
<nature> I thought it should be disabled
<samueldr> I seem to remember a quirk inherited from the generic image that might mean it's slightly broken
<samueldr> yeah, for the generic image
<nature> oooh
<nature> ok
<samueldr> you're using the temporary for like one or two months image for raspberry pi 4
<samueldr> which is now nearing what, a year?
* samueldr sighs
<nature> because my /boot is full, I will need to clean it
<samueldr> yeah
<nature> oh really, still under development for an official release you mean ?
<samueldr> it shouldn't exist at all
<samueldr> the generic image will work at some point
<samueldr> but the raspberry pi 4 has been seemingly hard to mainline :/
<nature> oooh ok
<nature> boot: https://paste.rs/IZk
<nature> boot/kernels: https://paste.rs/v3L
<nature> boot/old: https://paste.rs/Qn1
<samueldr> yeah, you can clear boot/old
<nature> What can I remove "safely ?
<nature> ok
<nature> also should I clear the boot that is unmounted ?
<samueldr> even boot/kernels is safe since AFAIK it comes from your usage of extlinux maybe?
<samueldr> it would be a good idea otherwise it might be confusing
<nature> I removed the extlinux option

<nature> ok
<nature> I clean the unmounted boot and removed boot + old
<samueldr> you should `mv` the kernel dir out of it too
<nature> still not enough space...
<samueldr> at rebuild it will copy everything in there anyway
<samueldr> and *once copied* it would do some cleanups, but see the conundrum?
<samueldr> it can't clean-up if there's no space to fit the newly added things!
<samueldr> doing it the other way around is scary since it means you might not be able to boot!
<nature> yeah... I wouldn't want to have to restart ^^'

<samueldr> that's weird
<samueldr> there's enough space for at least another full copy of itself
<nature> ok let me try again
<samueldr> 49M is smaller than 128M
<samueldr> quite smaller :)
<nature> yes
<samueldr> and some of the big files are not repeated
<samueldr> the font .pf2 can be removed
<samueldr> the background too, but eh, that's only 10K
<samueldr> you did disable grub, right?
<samueldr> boot.loader.grub.enable = false;
<nature> yes
<samueldr> good
<nature> yeah ran out of space again
<nature> It looks like this now
<samueldr> are you doing something that would make your initrd quite big?
<samueldr> 35M/boot/kernel.img.tmp
<samueldr> hmm
<samueldr> that's a big kernel
<nature> may I share my configuration.nix
<samueldr> yeah
<nature> I added a line
<samueldr> you're using the rpi4 kernel?
<nature> boot.kernelPackages = pkgs.linuxPackages_latest;
<samueldr> that won't work right
<samueldr> boot.kernelPackages = pkgs.linuxPackages_rpi4;
<nature> okok
<samueldr> I guess that would be the main difference in size here
<nature> I took it from the wiki on arm but I guess there were speaking about the generic image again
<samueldr> yeah
<samueldr> the rpi4 is really grinding my gears :)
<samueldr> maybe since 2020.07 u-boot could be used to reduce the difference
<nature> yes haha
<samueldr> it would likely still need its own kernel, but at least work the same way as the other boards otherwise
<nature> would it be worth form me to go the u-boot way ?
<samueldr> emphatically my biased self says so
<nature> haha
<samueldr> u-boot is like using a proper firmware that has well defined semantics
<samueldr> while the default boot chain for the raspberry pi 4 is like having the minimum viable product that works *for their use case only*
<nature> oooh ok
<nature> yes! it worked!
<nature> It's now building
<samueldr> you might have to keep your eye on the old directory when rebuilding
<samueldr> an option is to resize the partition
<nature> oh crap
<samueldr> since it's basically FAT32 and EXT4, you could do it on your computer
<nature> it failed...
<nature> so I should reduce the ext4 and increase the fat32 one ?
<samueldr> that's something that would help

<samueldr> not unusual
<samueldr> the pis since the third (I'm not sure about the 2) are hot bois,

<nature> any tools to resize the partitions ?

<nature> ?

<nature> And I don't seem to be able to just resize with fdisk

<nature> ok
<nature> great thing with nixos I can just nix-shell -p :D
<nature> I won't mess up the data on the ext4 patition by reducing the size tho ?
<samueldr> when using gparted it knows how to handle the *filesystem*

<samueldr> I work full time on Mobile NixOS though
<nature> wow!!!
<samueldr> (well, looked at the issues recently)
<nature> I had no ideas there was a Mobile NixOS project
<samueldr> I had the idea of trying to use the raspberry pi 4 as a "thick client" desktop replacement using something like x2go, but I had issues with power delivery to the external drive which got me frustrated so I put the project on ice for the time being
<nature> So the raspberry would be the client to access a beefier machine ?
<nature> and really power issues event when it's usb-c powered !?
<samueldr> usb-c does not matter for power
<samueldr> usb-c is the receptacle
<samueldr> what matters is "USB PD"
<samueldr> USB Power Delivery
<samueldr> the raspberry pi 4 does not support power delivery
<samueldr> in fact, a proper power delivery power supply can fail to work properly on early models!
<samueldr> because (again) the foundation cheaped out
<samueldr> so it's basically as the 3B did, it's dumb 5V3A which is technically in spec for newer USB

<cirno999> these linux phones are interesting though it would be a pain if i had to go back to something like debian

<nature> samueldr: it's boot and connection to my network but I cannot connect as the nixos user, it says: This account is currently not available.
<nature> *booting and connecting
<samueldr> nature: since you're not including the installer profile in your config it doesn't add the nixos user anymore
<samueldr> I figure you didn't set a root password, right%
<samueldr> ?*
<nature> is there a default root password ?
<samueldr> no, meaning it's locked :)
<nature> I did but it somehow got earased since the reboot
<samueldr> weird
<samueldr> unlike most SBCs nixos is secure by default, no default passwords no default user accounts that can be accessed through the network
<nature> could I chroot on the sd and try to set a root password ?
<samueldr> maybe it'd work since you use qemu-user things
<samueldr> nixos-enter
<samueldr> another option is to boot an older generation
<samueldr> which you can do by copying the files from the old/ directory you so despise :)
<nature> oooh ok
<samueldr> replacing the files where the name match
<nature> I can try that
<nature> oh wait I just got an idea
<samueldr> ssh key in the root account?
<nature> Since I was able to run nixos-rebuilt switch but with boot unmounted
<nature> actually good idea too

<nature> neither copying the ssh key not nixos-enter worked :(
<nature> my last idea then, since I was able to nixos-rebuild switch without boot mount and I have a copy of that boot, what if I copied the files on the partition directly ?
<samueldr> in theory it's the same generation that's been built, no?
<nature> it's supposed to be the first nixos-rebuild after boot yeah
<samueldr> at the very worst you can backup your configuration.nix and start over if you break things too much :)
<nature> yes... worst case scenario haha

<nature> so to avoid being locked out again I should have the users.users.nixos ={} config right ?

<samueldr> or your own, switch, and set password
