If anyone's about and inclined, I'm using NixOps to deply from an x86_64 to an aarch64 machine. Rather than use the binary cache (as I expected) NixOps is building all the packages prior to deploying. Is that expected behaviour or mis-configuration on my part?

hi there. i am trying to install nixos on a raspberry pi 3 and am new to both the os and the device. i've flashed the stable 19.03 image to an SD card per https://nixos.wiki/wiki/NixOS_on_ARM but am not sure what to do next.
<blankhart>
the page says "base images are configured to boot up with a serial TTY ( RX/TX UART ) @ 115200 Baud" but i am not sure how to make use of this information.
<samueldr>
that's for if you're using a serial cable
<samueldr>
the raspberry pi will work with hdmi output
<samueldr>
there is one caveat
<samueldr>
during the first boot it might take a while longer than expected to show the command prompt
<blankhart>
do i need login credentials?
<samueldr>
it will resize the partition to fill the SD card
<samueldr>
the VT will automatically log you as root, no password needed
<blankhart>
cool
<samueldr>
it might look like it's stuck at "Starting kernel..." but it's (likely) not
<samueldr>
there is a more detailed explanation, but the simple one is "the gpu drivers for the rpi are not available until it is booted", which is now fixed in the unstable release
<blankhart>
thanks, i saw something about this on the wiki and will work from that first if i confront the issue. now to rummage around for the serial cable...
<samueldr>
if you have a serial cable it will be fine, it will not look like it is hanging :)
<ToxicFrog>
Yeah, you need either serial or USB keyboard + HDMI, and once you have that just connect to the network, edit /etc/nixos/configuration.nix, and nixos-rebuild as usual
<ToxicFrog>
Don't do what I did and forget to define any user accounts~
<samueldr>
or if you do, know that you can boot a previous generation :)
<blankhart>
got it. is there a recent ghc that builds out of the box for aarch64?
zupo has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]

<blankhart>
that is, is it currently easier to cross compile or build on the host
<DigitalKiwi>
or you can do what i do and type blindly at a keyboard
<DigitalKiwi>
or when you forget to add a password and can't login just pop the card out and modify paswd on your desktop

<DigitalKiwi>
these may or may not be good ideas but they are ideas :D
<DigitalKiwi>
and things i've actually had to resort to :(
<ToxicFrog>
samueldr: you can if you have keyboard input during the bootloader, which I didn't :
<ToxicFrog>
:P
<samueldr>
right
<blankhart>
the ubuntu server image had a default configuration with ssh set up to deal with keyboard/display issues, so you just needed an ethernet cable
<DigitalKiwi>
it's been a while but i think ssh is setup but disabled in the default
<DigitalKiwi>
i know i can blindly type systemctl start sshd but i'm not sure if that's my custom image or default image works too
<blankhart>
i mean for first ever login from another device
<samueldr>
it is setup
<samueldr>
it needs both a password added to root, and to start the service
<samueldr>
just like the regular installer image
<samueldr>
(or an authorized_keys added to /root/
<blankhart>
but ssh is not an alternative to serial cable or keyboard+HDMI here
<blankhart>
it seems like it could be though, the way the virtualbox nixos is set up with a "demo" user account
<DigitalKiwi>
i don't have an hdmi device but i can connect a keyboard and set password and start sshd
<DigitalKiwi>
and yeah once you get it setup once you can start building custom images with an authorized key :D
<blankhart>
cool, thanks!
<DigitalKiwi>
which is nice since i don't have a serial cable either
<blankhart>
yeah turns out i don't have a keyboard or a serial cable :D
