it seems you can't build `nix` on darwin, as the install check fails with `error: socket path '/private/var/folders/fv/xqjrpfj516n5xq_m_ljpsjx00000gn/T/nix-build-nix-2.2.2.drv-0/nix-test/var/nix/daemon-socket/socket' is too long`; this seems to be controlled by NIX_BUILD_TOP, but I fail to see how to set that (or why I even need to set that). I'm on the 19.03 branch.

yeah, $TMPDIR + the nix build prefix can go over the max unix socket length
