I see in the man page for home-manager that the plugins field supports specific scripts based on the plugin's repo. But why can't I just use the appropriate nix package since that already exists?

Because the files are organiced differently within the `pkgs.zsh-syntax-highlighting` than in in the github repo. Perhaps you can use `file = "share/zsh-syntax-highlighting/zsh-syntax-highlighting.zsh";`

if you enable pkgs.tmuxPlugins.fingers on your tmux config in home-manager, it appends path to a non-existant file in .tmux.conf so it doesnt work, not sure if its a fault in nixpkgs or in home-manager

DigitalKiwi, yes but it often has nix related paths in there , or at least mine does, that arent as portable
