aszlig: I just dumped a big investigation into the Hetzner issue. Will have to try your patch tomorrow. But already a question: Does the patch result in a link-local address to the gateway being set (e.g. what fpletz suggested at nixcon, `ip route add SERVERIP/27 via GATEWAYIP dev eth0`)?

In general, the problems so far seem to be:

1. can't do what `network-setup-start` does, `ip route replace default via "GATEWAYIP" dev eth0 proto static`, without adding the above link-local route before.

2. local-commands isn't actually working as expected in NixOS (it gets disabled forever if a configured dnsmasq service gets removed from the config), so the `ip route change` you put in via nixops doesn't always run.

even if your patch takes care of (1), we probably want to look into (2) separately

nh2: yeah, having to use localCommands is always looking for trouble though

so yes, fixing this for NixOS in general is a good idea anyway, but at the time i wrote the hetzner backend, setting those routes was only possible with localCommands
