I have big sur on a thumb drive, but can't install it because I can't change the boot settings, because I don't have an admin account after having to do a full wipe, so I'll have to install mojave to create an admin to install big sur? :)

on the up side, I did want to test the installer on mojave but didn't really want to have to disrupt the device I'm using for builds

I also wondered today if there's a way to add new cryptousers to a volume, which seems like it might also achieve what we want wrt to encrypting the Nix volume, but it sounds like it's a dead-end too

So one of the things I’m wondering about is if you can create further root dirs on the data volume itself. Aiui, it’s mounted atop the base volume, no?

no it's not, they essentially implemented something like bind mounts but on the apfs layer
