Hullo. So, I want to build a router which can do my wifi and a few gigabit ports (switched is okay) and which doesn't use a lot of power. Are there any reasonable hardware solutions out there that tick those boxes?

Would also like to know regarding WiFi, I have never found any good do-it-yourself wifi setups...

srhb: apu4 + 2x mpcie wifi (up the ac wave 1 I believe)
<hexa->
Comes with 4 dedicated gbit nics
<eyJhb>
Can the apu stuff just do it all?
<srhb>
hexa-: apu4 being pcengines?
<hexa->
srhb: yep
<hexa->
though the wifi options on the thing are limited, due to mpcie
<srhb>
Hm, I see. Guess I've got some reading to do for the wifi bits then. Not sure this is where I'd like to be limited. Rest of it looks very interesting though :)

tbh little comes close to a proper embedded router and openwrt on it
<hexa->
the management of these devices is not very declarative, but both the their hostapd "module" and their wifi stack are better maintained
<hexa->
if you want this all in a single device, look out for m.2 e-key support
<hexa->
also you'd need two separate radios for dualband support
<hexa->
clarfifcation: little comes close to a proper embedded router and openwrt on it *for wifi*
<hexa->
especially if you can hang them from your ceiling
<eyJhb>
hexa-: I actually considered just mounting the apu4 on the ceiling
<eyJhb>
Not sure that it will look good however
<hexa->
that could be somewhat unwieldy when you want to use the lan ports
<eyJhb>
Yuuup
<eyJhb>
Surely none would appreciate that. But what you are saying is the same as I have found, regarding WiFi. Rarely the stuff you make yourself that works that great/practical
<hexa->
personally I'm using ubnt ac lite with openwrt
<hexa->
the hardware is fine, though a bit dated, their software isn't.
<hexa->
11ax is not quite there yet on openwrt, but it will certainly be the first distro to have support
<eyJhb>
I just use it with the original software that it ships with, I have the ac long range I think. But I can't even get it to the bathroom because of poor placement atm. :(
<eyJhb>
Any reason to flash openwrt on it, besides being open?
<hexa->
debugability, less magic that eventually breaks
<eyJhb>
And less need for the controller software...
<hexa->
yup, I heard the latest unifi controller force upgrades your devices and it also seemed to break vlans for some people
<hexa->
also it's that monstrous java+mongodb package
