<gchristensen> ikwildrpepper: 'round? I want to do a deploy, but it might go sour and I don't want to set off that mac in a perpetual overheat loop
qyliss_ has joined #nixos-infra
<gchristensen> *sigh* the password I have here for the macs doesn't work, meaning I either typo'd it or something else went wrong
<gchristensen> it isn't a lot of fun to spin new images ;_;
<gchristensen> the only problem is the country
<hexa-> they don't have ipmi on board, do they?
<gchristensen> no
<gchristensen> they're macs :)
<hexa-> yeah, who knows :)

<ikwildrpepper> gchristensen: maybe I should rent out kvm-over-ip just like hetzner does
<gchristensen> good idea

cole-h has quit [Quit: Goodbye]
<ikwildrpepper> gchristensen: I love how that link has 'copy-of-ethernet-power-controller-7' in it :D
<gchristensen> hahaha
<gchristensen> that is how you know you got the good stuff
<ikwildrpepper> I suspect that means my house will catch fire
<gchristensen> you need copy-of-ethernet-power-control-7-FINAL.2-REVIEWED
<ikwildrpepper> hehe\
<ikwildrpepper> dammit, I see I missed twitter-coffee
<gchristensen> next time!
<ikwildrpepper> I always imagined nix people to be more tea people somehow
<gchristensen> club mate
<ikwildrpepper> yeah
<gchristensen> I don't get the appeal of club mate, but I always drink one when I'm over there
<ikwildrpepper> yeah, stopped doing that after my first
<ikwildrpepper> first one was at Nix sprint in Zidance
<ikwildrpepper> I think, maybe it was in Ljubljana though
<ikwildrpepper> clearly, my memory is not very good
<samueldr> just saying https://pikvm.org/
<samueldr> that could be helpful if you have one at home to attach once on a device-under-work
<gchristensen> interesting
<gchristensen> > Just a few cheap parts and half an hour of assembly and you will have the device that supports Full HD video, Mass Storage Drive, keyboard & mouse, control the ATX power and much more.
<gchristensen> hi
<ikwildrpepper> gchristensen: x 16? :)
<ikwildrpepper> maybe they could also act as arm builders :-p
<samueldr> the software looks a bit garbage, but it's the concept under that is extremely accessible
<gchristensen> ikwildrpepper: yeah, x16 you start getting in to the category of enterprise grade hw
<gchristensen> but maybe 1 of these could be made to support many

<andi-> Isn't there a serial for provisioning and hardware reset on all/most modern macs on one of the thunderbolt/usb-c connections? Can't you use those for remote consoles via a RPi or such?
<samueldr> there is serial hardware broken out to one of the type-c ports IIRC
<samueldr> not sure what you can do with it though
<samueldr> and IIRC there was no hardware "available" for this until recently
<andi-> I know the asahi folks use that in their linux user space and bootloader but not sure what stock macos/x86 linux provides on there
<samueldr> well, m1n1 is the wild card
<samueldr> it is driving that serial port
<andi-> Yeah but the hardware does predate the m1's as IIRC that is used for factory & mass provisining
<samueldr> yeah, the big question is: what can it do for apple software?
<andi-> My strange mac here has a /dev/tty.debug-console
<andi-> And now I am beyong my ability to operate that OS :D
<andi-> *beyond
<XgF> andi-: to my knowledge its only on the m1 macs and the only common hardware capable of speaking to it is also an m1 mac
<andi-> :(
<samueldr> AFAIUI though that's only for convenience's sake
<samueldr> marcan was looking for "straight" type-c cable at one point for that
<samueldr> and I can't find a link quickly, but either it's planned to, or was done, to design open hardware for that
