<gchristensen>
I think the guest is so much better b/c qemu is running with cache=none :)
<gchristensen>
no, sorry
<gchristensen>
cache=unsafe
<LnL>
ah
<LnL>
that makes more sense
<LnL>
you can also set sync=false with zfs
<gchristensen>
hmmm!
<gchristensen>
but anyway, I think it is worth giving a shot so Rob is going to install NixOS on two of the machines (mac2, mac3)
<LnL>
so if software runs an fsync on the volume zfs just runs return true :p
<samueldr>
if apple ever releases new "pro" hardware, would a host presenting the multiple VMs be better than a beefier machine for NixOS usage?
<gchristensen>
no idea :)
<gchristensen>
tonight I'm going to make the systemd units and make my mac run ofborg again under this mechanism, tomorrow or friday Rob is going to get the macs for "maintenance"
<samueldr>
>> The last time that Apple updated the Mac mini was on 16 October 2014
<gchristensen>
sad, huh?
<samueldr>
yes!
<LnL>
ye
<samueldr>
though it's scary seeing the new mac hardware to think what they could do with a newer mac mini
<LnL>
at this point it's better to put laptops at a 20% open angle in a box and put those in your datacenter
<samueldr>
imagine a zero-upgrade not-even-the-storage situation
<gchristensen>
LnL: or a fake display adapter =)
<gchristensen>
huge thank-yous to Clever for this suggestion
<samueldr>
wondering *if* they boot without the display
<LnL>
that doesn't sound ridiculous enough
<samueldr>
maybe no need for the adapter
<samueldr>
though the termals are still going to be abysmal
<samueldr>
(venting from the keyboard IIRC)
<gchristensen>
that is true. just throw an ice-pack on there.
<gchristensen>
oh one thing is the SMC doesn't seem no spin up/down the fans on my apple laptop under Linux, and I had to manually spin up the fans
<cransom>
they speculate mini is going to get an update this month (at least announced), but who knows if that happens.
<cransom>
for the earlier generation mac minis, mozilla had hundreds of them. they didn't boot with out a display attached. they found cramming a resistor between 2 pins on the dvi output was enough and they ran fine headless.
<gchristensen>
hah
<samueldr>
the "speculation" has been going for years :)
<samueldr>
I think it's more hope than speculation
<samueldr>
(though there is an event this month)
<samueldr>
(or expected to be, not entirely certain if it's been confirmed)
<cransom>
i would absolutely refresh my imac with a mini if it had usb-c/thunderbolt outputs that i could run an external graphics card with (if the internal was still jokingly bad)
orivej has quit [Ping timeout: 244 seconds]
<gchristensen>
I ... don't plan on buying another mac :/
