So I tried booting it again (With a fresh image on the sd card so that the tryout with the rpi 0 could not interfere...), again no output (as expected), but I led it sit a few minutes before pulling the plug

I checked and it has indeed a /var/log/journal, so the kernel seems to be booting in the background anyway
